    2. Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. Aug. 5, 1938. Page 1. ONE FELLED BY HEAT HERE Mrs. C. Pamarello Is Victim as Mercury Soars to 95 to Set New Record. One heat prostration was reported yesterday in Rutland as the temperature soared to new heights after 12 days of record-breaking heat. Mrs. Catherine Pamarello, 39, of 139 Spruce street fell a victim to the 95- degree high heat in her home yesterday afternoon. She was treated by Dr. George J. Ravit. Yesterday's mark of 95 degrees, the highest since August 1, 1933, when the mercury hit 97, came as a climax to 12 hot days since July 24 with the thermometer registering 80 degrees or over each day. Wednesday a high of 92 degrees of July, 1921's all time high of 98. The lowest Rutland temperature in the recent heat-wave, which has affected the entire nation, was only 57. Sixteen out of the last 17 nights have found the mercury dropping no lower than 60 degrees. July of 1935 set a record for "heat- longevity." At the time 22 consecutive days of 80 degree heat were recorded by George H. Ross, co-operative weather observer. Rutland hotels and tourist homes yesterday reported heavy registrations. These were explained as a flight of tourists from large urban centers to the comparatively cool Vermont countryside. Supervisors of the Madison Street Nursery school took their young charges to Main street park yesterday for their regular afternoon nap, instead of to the schoolrooms, in an attempt to escape the withering heat. Yesterday's attendance at the Rutland swimming pool, neighboring swimming places and lakes in the Rutland area was reported as near record-breaking. Discomfort from the heat was increased yesterday by the extremely high humidity. Rutlanders shed their jackets and dressed as lightly as possible. Every effort was made to stay off the street and cold-drink and ice cream sales in the city's stores were reported high. Transcribed by, Joan H.
