Several strangers were "laid over" in Poultney during the recent storm. Quickly spread the news Wednesday morning when a few learned that a mail train had arrived from Troy. We cannot give any news of the fore part of the week outside of the village, as no mails were received. When the train arrived here on Wednesday it attracted a good deal of attention. People ran from all directions yet no one seemed to be "afraid of the cars." The wind-storm on Monday took several squares of slate from the barn of John L. Ward, scattering the slate in all directions and sending one, crashing through blind and window, into the house, passing close to Mrs. Ward's head, but fortunately doing no further injury. Report from Stamford, Bennington county, says that a horse and cutter and two men were caught up and carried over a fence and deposited in a huge snow bank, during the storm of last Monday. Mrs. F. Burpee has rented rooms to R.G. M. Johnson. Mrs. R. W. Goodrich and Miss Hattie Monroe spent Sunday in Salem with Mrs. B. G. Rice. Miss Nettie Forbes has gone to Chester, N.Y., to spend a short time with friends. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.
