    3. Hello, Someone on the HAWAII List got me thinking about my ancestor's nephew, Charles KIDDER, from northern Maine. He left the Calais, ME, area ~1884 to migrate to the Hawaiian Islands. He settled in Honolulu, married there, and had many children. (from the "KIDDER book" and responses to my queries on HAWAII Lists) When I looked at some old postings on that List, I was reminded of a web site which has information on that family. But, it also mentions that a Joseph S. KIDDER was in the Hawaiian Islands ~1850. He was naturalized there in 1851 and got a passport there in 1852. I checked www.familysearch.org just now and the only Joseph S. KIDDER mentioned as having been born in the 1810's to 1830's was: Joseph Souther KIDDER, b1810 in Orleans Co., VT. That site says his parents are Joseph KIDDER and Sarah SOUTHER. And it says he married Clarinda BOWMAN in 1842 in Salem, MA. She might have been from Salem. There is no further information on Clarinda BOWMAN on that site. So, I don't know when she died, and I don't know if they had children. Oops. Another researcher said he married in Salem, MA, in 1836 to Rebecca NOURSE. This researcher says that Rebecca died in 1839 in Lynn, MA. And, it says that Rebecca's parents were Phinehas NOURSE and Anne THOMPSON.) I was just wondering if anyone knew about this couple, and whether Joseph and Clarinda KIDDER ever spent some time living in the Hawaiian Islands (1850's). Or, possibly he went there for a few years. Further checking on-line, and the 1880 census has reportedly the same Joseph KIDDER back in Orleans Co., VT, Age 69, and a widower. And, he has a daughter, Anna R. KIDDER, 40 (b~1840 MA) living with him. If she was born ~1840, she must have been a daughter of Joseph and Rebecca. And, possibly Rebecca died as a result of childbirth in 1839 and that is when Anna was born. I just checked the 1860 census, and Joseph and Clarinda are in Orleans Co., VT, at Ages 49 and 39. They have Alice BOWMAN, 64, living with them. And there is a girl, Lisa? / Kina? KINNEY, 12, living with them. Joseph is still there in 1870, but has probable daughter, Anna KIDDER, 31, with him, and Alice? BOWMAN, 74. So, it seems that Mrs. Clarinda KIDDER died during 1860's in VT. Since we don't have an 1850 census on-line, there still isn't a way to find out if Joseph S. KIDDER spent some time in 1850's in the Hawaiian Islands. This family is not on my family tree. I am just curious about them. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (The father, Joseph KIDDER, is in the 1820 census in Orleans Co., VT, supposedly with a wife and several children.)

    3. Betty; I don't believe this Joseph S. Kidder was ever in Hawaii. Following is what I have found about this individual http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vermont/OrleansIrasburg.html Joseph Kidder, born in Lyndeborough, N.H., April 7, 1780, came to Irasburgh in February 1807. He occupied a part of a neighbor's house for a few weeks, while he was constructing a log house of his own, to which, as soon as completed, he moved his family, a distance of three miles, upon the farm now owned by Freeman Metcalf. He was the first permanent settler west of Black river, and, as near as can be ascertained, the twelfth or thirteenth family in the town. Mr. Kidder made the journey from New Hampshire, a distance of two hundred miles, with two yoke of oxen. Years after, Mrs. Kidder informed her daughter Mary (Mrs. Ware), that the summer after she came here, there was not a blade of grass about their dwelling, and that her brooms she manufactured herself, from hemlock boughs. Bears were numerous and troublesome, rendering it necessary to watch their stock at night. At the breaking out of the war of 1812, several neighbors who had settled near them, left through fear of the Indians, leaving this family alone. In 1836, Mr. Kidder sold out, intending to go west; but, in 1837, Mrs. Kidder died and he abandoned the project and purchased an adjoining farm where he died, in 1853. Two of his five children are now living, Mrs. Joseph S. Kidder, of Coventry, and Mrs. Mary Ware, of this town. 3. Hi Betty - I started to look at your question because there is a Rebecca Nourse who was hanged as a witch at Salem, but she was not a Nourse by birth - she married one. Anyway, several of the vital record books to the end of the year 1849 that have been published for the cities and towns of Massachusetts are on line at google.books.com in the Lynn Vital Records - [search for "Vital Records of Lynn, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849"] There is a Rebecca, wife of Joseph S. Kidder, who died February 16, 1839 There is also an unamed son of Joseph S. & Rebecca who died in 1837 Some of the books for Salem and Danvers are on line also. It looks like Rebecca & Joseph filed their marriage intention in Danvers. The marriages for Salem book is not on line here. Vital Records of Danvers, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849 pages 156,198 They do not have Danvers Volume 1 [births] on line. But they probably have this at the NEHGS society site. Also, check your public library. They may have a selection of these books [called the Tan Books] in their research room. Salem births are on line, but no Anna Kidder birth. Also, could not find a birth for Rebecca Nourse here. Go to www.google.books.com Enter vital records massachusetts in the search box, and you will get a list of all the books they have. For Clarinda Bowman, take a look at the Salem marriages book. If you search for her and Joseph Kidder, you do get a hit, but the the book has not been digitized yet. Looks like they were married, or filed their marriage intention June 10, 1842 http://books.google.com/books?q=vital+records+massachusetts+clarinda+bowman+joseph+kidder This was after Rebecca died, so maybe Anna is the daughter of Clarinda Bowman and Joseph S. Kidder, assuming all these people are the correct family.... Maybe Joseph & Anna went to Vermont right after they married. If so, you should look for Anna's birth in Vermont, or Hawaii if they actually went there. RE: Hawaii - why do you think he went there? Was he a missionary? or a businessman? I watched a program many years ago on PBS about the last Queen of Hawaii - Liliuokalani who was eventually overthrown. Part of the program was about the missionaries who went to Hawaii starting in the 1830's to convert the population to Christianity, and about the American business interests there involving sugar cane production and pineapples.
