    3. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, January 4, 1889 Windham 1/4/1889 Widow Clark STEARNS is very low, and grave fears are entertained about her recovery. Ward P. CLAYTON is said to be the victim of a cancerous humor (tumor? RHB) which is developing fast. Charles Henry HOWARD, son-in-law of C. H. CONVERSE, is stopping with his dad-in-law, this winter; but his Rose will bloom around the Aaron BEMIS place, when Spring opens. Frank STOWELL is dead. It will be remembered that he was the boy who was instrumental in Miss Constance UPHAM's leg being broken, a year ago last Summer. The County Court found him deserving of a punishment of three years stay at the work-house at Rutland. Frank has not been right in his mind since he went there (and we greatly doubt if he was before); was full of strange misgivings, believing he was going to be hung, and many other vague notions. A report got into circulation, last Summer, that he had tried to get away; but that was all false, as we saw a letter from the Superintendent who said Frank has been a good boy, and had given them no trouble, being very passive in his disposition. It was a sad blow to the family who had heretofore borne a good reputation, and now they are called upon to supplement that sorrow by his death. He was taken Saturday, the 23d ult., with a sore throat, which proved to be diphtheria, and Wednesday morning found Frank had paid all fines, and worked out all sentences which could be imposed on him; had paid the debt of nature, and was dead. One word about the young lady, and we will lay down the pen concerning this distasteful subject. Miss UPHAM is a very worthy young lady, and nothing can be said against her. She taught a term of school this last Fall, giving good satisfaction. She has so far recovered from the breaking of her limb to be able to walk quite well, though with a limp or halting gait which she will probably carry through life.
