    3. Unless my eye doctor was joking, and he very seldom smiles, he said they did it in ancient Egypt. Says it wasn't very comfortable then....... 3. I was so surprised to read this when I saw it the first time. I had to go back to re-read to make sure I read it correctly. I guess it's just something I never gave much thought to, but it seems so early I just found a book on google.com The history of modern cataract surgery By Marvin L. Kwitko, Charles D. Kelman I don't have time to look at it now, but I did just read that there is evidence of cataract surgery in Greece during the time of Hippocrates. Well, at least sometimes it didn't kill the patient outright [grin]. There are mummies with HEALED trepanning scars. Sometimes it seems people think all knowledge started when we invented the computer. In the palace of Knossos in Crete, they had porcelain flush toilets and hot and cold running water. That was about 1600 BC. My grandparents didn't have those things in the family farmhouse in Springfield until the 1930s or 1940s. Darrell

    3. My grandparents in Orleans had running water in the 30s. Still heating it in the reservoir on the side of the wood stove, though. Neysa ----- Original Message ----- From: Darrell A. 3. It's frightening, isn't it? All these "advanced" civilizations of long ago are now extinct. What happened to them? if they were all so smart??? I know one was buried in lava in Italy...but that doesn't explain all the rest. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Darrell A.
