Author: avarim Surnames: Sheldon, Green Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.unknown/4945/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have the marriage of Robert Green of Sheffield [Berkshire Co., MA] and Mary Shailor as 18 Jan 1773 At North Canann, Litchfield, CT F. W. Bailey Early Connecticut Marriages, Book 5, p. 21 I have not found a birth record for Ellis Green. She died 28 Jun 1816 at Hampton, Washington, New York. She was supposedly born in Poultney,Rutland, VT. Thaddeus Sheldon and his wife Ellis attended church in Poultney, VT. I found the following references to the activities of Robert Green in Poultney, VT F59.P8J8 A History of the Town of Poultney, VT to 1875 pp.23-24 "The first setlement of Poultney was commenced in `5 Apr 1771. There were several families that season and soon followed by these persons in this order: Icahbod and Joseph Marshall, Silas Howe, Heber Allen, John Grant, Thomas Goodwin, Robert Green, ..." pp. 25-26 Poultney 14 Jun 1773 'We,the subscribers ...covenant...to have our equal part in giving 50 acres of land ... for the settlement of a midwife. ..., Robert Green, ..." pp. 41-42 A List of the Poles and Rateable Estate of Poultney, VT 4 Oct 1871 ... Robert Green 45 pounds, 10 sh." This supports the fact that Robert Green was living in Poultney, VT during the time of Ellis Green's birth. Historical Society, Hartford, CT, Book C, p.562 Oliver Sanford, Jr. was an early and prominent member of the Baptist Church. He was a farmer in Poultney, VT. On 25 May 1795, Oliver and Catherine [Green] Sanford signed a quit claim of all rights in the Susquehannah Purchase which had been willed by her father, Robert Green, to his children. The estate was distributed 29 Aug 1846. If Robert Green was a member of the Baptist Church in Poultney, VT, then any birth records of his children would probably be found there. I have not written a book about Thaddeus Sheldon. That was Ruth Watson of New York City. You might Google her name and see if you can contact her. 3. I am searching for information on the family of David Edwards, b. 5 Nov 1770 in Haverhill, MA. He was the son of John Edwards and Jemima Wallingford. David and his brother Timothy Edwards are both listed in the history of Walden, Caledonia County, VT. David is listed as having voted on 4 Sept 1802 and again as voting for Representative to Congress on 10 Dec 1804. I believe that this man is the father of my gr gr gr grandmother Esther Edwards, b. 3 Mar 1803 in VT. I am trying to find birth records that will support this fact. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. Janet Heck geheck@embarqmail.com

    1. [VERMONT] Boy Drowns in White River
    2. Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. Aug. 5, 1938. Page 1. BOY DROWNS IN WHITE R. New Jersey Lad Slips on Rock and Is Carried Under in Full View of Mother. BETHEL, Aug. 4--A six-year-old Ridgewood , N.J. boy, was drowned in the White river, shortly after 4 o'clock this afternoon when he slipped on a rock in the river and went under after a brief, futile struggle. The boy, Douglas Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Murray, had been wading in the river near its junction with Olympus brook. With him at the time were his eight-year-old brother, Wallace and two young friends, Dolores and John Kimball. Watching helplessly from the bank was Douglas' mother. Her father, B. A. Goodale, who owns property in the vicinity, had left to attend to business in the neighborhood. Mrs. Murray's screams brought forth a large crowd to the banks of the river, and Douglas' water-sodden body was recovered an hour later a half-mile down the river by Calvin Cornell of Bethel, one of a group of young men and women who had been swimming in Parker's hole. Eye-witnesses to the drowning expressed the belief that the swift current of White river put a quick end to the boy's struggles as his body tumbled over the rocks down the river. It was believed that he fell into a deep hole in the river after slipping on the rock. His body was taken to the home of his grandfather,B. A. Goodale. His father, who manages a camp at Smuggler's Notch, Mount Mansfield, was notified of the accident. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.

    2. Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. Aug. 5, 1938. Page 1. ONE FELLED BY HEAT HERE Mrs. C. Pamarello Is Victim as Mercury Soars to 95 to Set New Record. One heat prostration was reported yesterday in Rutland as the temperature soared to new heights after 12 days of record-breaking heat. Mrs. Catherine Pamarello, 39, of 139 Spruce street fell a victim to the 95- degree high heat in her home yesterday afternoon. She was treated by Dr. George J. Ravit. Yesterday's mark of 95 degrees, the highest since August 1, 1933, when the mercury hit 97, came as a climax to 12 hot days since July 24 with the thermometer registering 80 degrees or over each day. Wednesday a high of 92 degrees of July, 1921's all time high of 98. The lowest Rutland temperature in the recent heat-wave, which has affected the entire nation, was only 57. Sixteen out of the last 17 nights have found the mercury dropping no lower than 60 degrees. July of 1935 set a record for "heat- longevity." At the time 22 consecutive days of 80 degree heat were recorded by George H. Ross, co-operative weather observer. Rutland hotels and tourist homes yesterday reported heavy registrations. These were explained as a flight of tourists from large urban centers to the comparatively cool Vermont countryside. Supervisors of the Madison Street Nursery school took their young charges to Main street park yesterday for their regular afternoon nap, instead of to the schoolrooms, in an attempt to escape the withering heat. Yesterday's attendance at the Rutland swimming pool, neighboring swimming places and lakes in the Rutland area was reported as near record-breaking. Discomfort from the heat was increased yesterday by the extremely high humidity. Rutlanders shed their jackets and dressed as lightly as possible. Every effort was made to stay off the street and cold-drink and ice cream sales in the city's stores were reported high. Transcribed by, Joan H. 2. Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Mon. Jan. 16, 1933. RUTLAND, VT. DINNER IS GIVEN FOR NONAGENARIAN Nelson Washburn, Veteran of Civil War, Deplores Passing of G. A. R. Nelson Washburn of Gibson avenue, a Grand Army veteran, celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday at the home of his son, Cecil Washburn of Chaplin avenue. A turkey dinner featured by a huge cake, generously covered with lighted candles, was the outstanding event of the day, Mrs. Washburn was also present at the party. Friends in large numbers called at the Washburn home to congratulate the old soldier and scores of cards were received by the war veteran. Several bouquets of flowers, presented by friends, surrounded Mr. Washburn's chair. One of the callers yesterday was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans order. For considerable length of time, the two man sat discussing the war days of the Sixties and the decline of the various Grand Army posts in this section of the state. The nonagenarian pointed out that a fine symbol of the old American spirit is passing. Washburn was born at Sand Lake Mountain, N. Y., on January 15, 1843 the son of Samuel and Caroline Cline Washburn. He enlisted at Bennington in the First Vermont Light Artillery in 1862. He saw two years, six months and 10 days of war service, mainly under Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler. His health is unusually good for a man of his age. His sight is clear, his mind is keen and he is able to walk considerable distances. His average day is spent in reading and "puttering" about the house of his son, Leon Washburn on Gibson avenue, where he makes his home. Transcribed by, Joan H. They are still in operation today. http://www.kurnhattin.org/about/index.html Lisa llepore@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Neysa Johnson" <gramneysa@ct.metrocast.net> Could you be looking for the Kurn Hattin home in Westminster VT, a home for boys and girls at risk or in need? I was born in Northern Vermont, and when we moved to Brattleboro in the late 30s I am sure it was in operation. You can find info on google. Neysa -----Original Message----- From: yankeeindixie@bellsouth.net Would anyone know if there was an orphanage or reform school in Rockingham at the time of the 1920 census? I have a census that lists a James H. Capen, age 9, listed along with a large number of other children at one location living with five adults; none of the children having the names of any of the adults. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to track down my Capen relations and this one doesn't fit. Thank you for your time.
