The Vermont Phoenix, Brattleboro, Friday , January 16, 1891 Springfield news A. WOOLSON, a leading and respected citizen, and president of the First National bank, died Sunday in his 80th year after a long illness. His funeral, held on Wednesday, was largely attended. At the national bank meeting held on Wednesday, C. E. RICHARDSON was chosen president in place of Mr. WOOLSON, and R. M. COLBURN was elected to the vacant place in the board of directors. There was a large audience to hear Capt. CHILDS's address on the postal service, given at Grand Army hall on Wednesday evening, and he received a cordial reception from our people. The Clee club furnished music. The permanent organization of the free reading room was effected on Monday night. The rooms have been very neatly fitted up, and here may be found the Boston and New York daily papers and the leading magazines and weeklies of the country. The Vermont Phoenix, Brattleboro, Friday , January 16, 1891 Dummerston news The members of the circulating and the agricultural library have been notified to meet at the shop of the late Winslow DUTTON on Monday, January 19, at 7 o'clock P. M. for the purpose of uniting the two libraries into one and choosing the necessary officers. Volume five of the Vermont Historical Gazetteer, or magazine, containing the history of the towns of Windham county, will be published as soon as the necessary revision of the pamphlet histories of the towns already printed can be made and portions reprinted. The history of Dummerston receives the following commendation from Chicago by a resident of that city who has read the printed sheets of the forth-coming history of the county: "Don't expect that all the towns of Windham county will be as well written up as Dummerston; if you do you will be sadly disappointed." Copies of the town edition are still in demand, and a copy was sent recently to a lady living in the central part of New York. Donors of portraits for the town history can have the chance to furnish portraits for the county volume. The Christian Endeavor society will have a social in the vestry of the Congregational church Tuesday evening, January 27, to which all are cordially invited. Harriet, Below is Viola's obit. Legacy.com is a great source for RECENT newspaper obits. They don't have all newspapers, but I have had good luck on this site. Sometimes you can find archived obits (old), but there is a small fee to view them. For obits (from Vermont) that are very old, it is much better to contact the Vermont Dept. of Libraries to search for them for you, as long as you can give them enough information, such as exact date of death, and where their last residence was, so they know when and what newspaper(s) to search in. Hope this helps : ) Viola E. Norton LUDLOW - Viola E. Norton, 71, died Feb. 6, 2009, at Mount Ascutney Hospital. Hoping to clarify information on Frank O.Brock born 1869 in Sutton, Brome Co., PQ the son of Ebenezer Brock and Hannah Bedell. Frank Brock living Troy, Vermont in 1910 census, wife Melissa and son Harold A. Brock b.1897. Also living with them is daughter Nora b.1890 and her husband Charles Barnes. Can't find any of them after 1910...would like to find name of Frank Brock's wife and any children for Nora and son Harold. Where did they all end up? Thanks Janice
I'd guess it's because they don't have a waiting period after you apply for a license. You can get married on the same day. That is the way it is now, so it probably was the same back then. Perhaps NH had no waiting period back then either. Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jackbowk@aol.com> > Betty, > > Hope you learn why an elopement to VT was attractive back then. When I first read this thread, I was immediately reminded of the old Mount Washington Hotel - built around early 1900s (?) by rail tycoon Stickney. Now called Breton Woods, I believe. There is something about warm springs (?) I have a recollection of learning this tidbit from some school project on the famous and not-so-famous visiting places where the trains brought them. Bellows Falls was very popular - home to Hetty Green - as was Charlestown NH (the Connecticut River separates). There were several inns in Charlestown and elaborate steps cut into the river banks. Don't know if this is helpful, but one never knows! I, for one, have found info I never even thought I was looking for by reading EVERYTHING! --- On Fri, 2/20/09, Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> wrote: From: Betty <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [VERMONT] Bellows Falls/White River Junction To: vermont@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, February 20, 2009, 4:38 AM Hi Jack, When I mentioned this a couple years ago, I was told that it would have been fairly easy to get on a train in Boston, MA, and head up to White River Junction, VT. This was from a kind and helpful person on the Quebec list. I would like to join the Lamoille list also can someone send me the address. Thanks Harriet Hi Harriet- Those dates came from the 1900 census which lists month and year of birth. I was actually surprised that their ages stayed so consistent. That isn't usually the case with 50 years of census records, but they always show ages that make them born about 1861. In 1880 they were living in Eden, Lamoille County, VT In 1900 they were living in Lowell, Orleans County, VT In 1910 they were living in Albany, Orleans County, VT In 1920 they were living in Albany, Orleans County, VT In 1930 they were living in Albany, Orleans County, VT If you aren't in Vermont, have you tried RAOGK - Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness? There are a couple volunteers in Vermont who might be able to help you. And, maybe it will just take another set of eyes looking at the same record. http://www.raogk.org/ Note also that Ancestry has records of both Alice and Mitchell in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index. I think this might be available at NEGH Library, among other places. Maybe someone can check that for you. Have you seen this posting and contacted the descendant of Irene Shatney? I don't know their parents names, unless that is Alice in 1870 with her father, Orrison Miles in Hardwick, VT. If so, his wife's name in the 1860 census was Alma. And, there is a Shatney message board on Rootsweb and one woman seems to know a lot about this couple, including the names of Mitchell's father and grandfather: http://boards.ancestry.myfamily.com/surnames.shatney/32/mb.ashx Hope one of these tips will help. According to the 1900 census this couple married about 1879, as they had been married 21 years. Mitchell was born June 1861 in Canada, Alice March 1861 in Vermont. Then in the 1930 census it says they were married at the age of 18 (Mitchell) and 19 (Alice). If accurate, that actually narrows the date of marriage to being before Mitchell's 19th birthday in June 1880, but after Alice's 19th birthday in March 1880. To add to that information, their first son Clarence was born in May 1880, according to the 1880 census. At the time of that census, Mitchell was still 18 and Alice was 19. According to the 1920 census, Mitchell was not naturalized and he immigrated in 1870. So, it seems possible that the marriage would have been in Vermont. I did not find Mitchel Shatney in the 1870 census in the U.S., though. Note also that in two of the later censuses Mitchell was said to have been born in Vermont. In the 1870 census there was a 9 year old Alice Miles living in Hardwick, VT in a family headed by Orrison Miles.
