The first Rev. is usually listed as Leonard Frost and the second is listed as Leonard P. Frost. In reading about the first Leonard's ministry assignments I noted that another minister of the time was a Rev. Pickering. That might explain the second Leonard's middle name. Hemenway says that the Elkins of Williston was Rev. Hervey. S.D. shows up in Swanton; Jonathan is in Irasburg (often early settlers had land but didn't actually settle in towns). He was also mentioned in Woodbury, VT, which is north of Montpelier. Daniel was in Brownington, Josiah was in Greensboro, Cabot, Peacham, Troy, and Potton in the province of Quebec. There was also a Samuel in Greensboro. The Quebec Wilkinses are associated with a raid from Troy that occurred during the 1837 Canadian rebellion. I think that they actually lived in North Troy, which borders on Canada. If any of these names are familiar, let me know and I can look up more details about them. Thanks, Sylvia. The Peacham clan is from Jonathan's line. Mine are from Danville and Wheelock (so also Caledonia Co.) and then moved north to S. and N. Hero, before crossing into NY. Believe the only one in Williston was S.D. (Stephen David), my gg-grandfather, who was a methodist minister. Could you tell me who shows up in Brownington, Irasburg and Swanton? Orange Co? SD was son of David, who was b. in Wheelock. David had a sister Hannah, who I have been searching for - for years. They had a cousin named Hannah as well, but born 1812, while our Hannah was born 1806, so it has been confusing. thank you... Ricky On Thu, Mar 5, 2009 at 10:18 AM, Sylvia J. It's not that unusual even in these times. L.P. could have been a teacher and preacher at the same time, as the census says teacher but he appears in many pieces of literature as a preacher. It sure has been a productive search and a lot of fun. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Ricky, I found Elkinses both in the 1790 and 1800 censuses and in Abby Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer, which is a compendium of early Vermont town histories published in the late 19th century. In the 1790 census, there were Elkinses in Bennington, Orange, Caledonia, and Windham counties. In Abbey Hemenway, there are a lot in Peacham, with a scattering in other towns like Greensboro, Swanton, Irasburg, Williston, and Brownington. Sylvia On Tue, 3 Mar 2009, E. Hi again, Just to offer a little more information, this is the information from the 1800 census: In US, 66 people with surname, CALL. 13 people in NH: In Hillsborough Co.: David, Hazen, John, Joseph, Moses, Nathaniel, Silas, "widow" CALL. In Strafford Co.: Daniel, Philip, Stephen. In Cheshire Co.: Nathaniel. In Rockingham Co.: David. 6 people in VT: In Windsor Co.: John, Elias. In Rutland Co.: Anna. In Orange Co.: Rufus. In Franklin Co.: Joseph. In Essex Co.: Caleb. 7 people in MA, with a James CALL in Charlestown, MA. Mostly John's and Jonathan's in MA that year, with one Henry. 11 people in NY, in 5 different counties. No James or Silas. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (I have a man I believe is an ancestor, William WILKINS, who leaves MA in 1770's to go to the "Northern Territory of MA" and he is not found in any census record after that. He should have been in the 1790 census for "Maine" and in the 1800 census, if he was still alive, and he is not. It's possible he was a surveyor for the "Territory" and moved around a lot - so avoided all the census takers.) (Maine did not become a State until 1820.) (Someone told me last week that there was a William WILKINS in Amherst, NH, in 1790. But I was told he had sons. The William I am looking for had lost 2 young children before they left MA, and had one surviving daughter. I am trying to find out if he had a 4th child in "Maine" - a son, Samuel, born 1770's.) (Actually the "Bray WILKINS book" offers confusing information about this William. I don't know if he had 5 children in MA and lost 2 of those, and thus had 3 surviving children. The only child I can find as an adult is that surviving daughter, Eunice, who returned to MA, married but had no children.)
If I respond to the gc-gateway@rootsweb.com I get it back saying this isn't a valid address. I had written that Jean Emerson's of Deerfield, NH, father was a Frost and a minister. Jean is now in a nursing home and her son lives here if someone would like me to ask about his grandfather I will see what I can find out. Also Alvin Frost used to attend Hardwick Academy in Hardwick, VT and then later lived with his Mom in East Calais, VT. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: 20patrick Surnames: Barnes Barns Barrons Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.unknown/4949.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Researching 1812 units is tough. There are few Regiment histories. I use a CD from Ancestry.com "Military Records: War of 1812 Muster rolls". The nice thing about the CD is that you can search the following categories individually, together, or by more than one. These are First name, Last name, Company, Rank in, etc., so if I wanted to locate every person that was recorded in the War of 1812 with the first name of Leonard, I just place Leonard in the first name category and hit search. I can then check all of your names Barnes, Barns, Barrons. The only Leonard that served from the above surnames was a Leonard Barns serving in Captain Hopkins company, Col Martindale's Reg't. With this CD you can also pull up every member of Colonel Martindale's Regiment. There were 634 with 10 Captains. Another source; "State of Vermont, Roster of Soldiers in the War of 1812" by The Adjutant General lists all of the vermont soldiers and where they were from, if known. This is where I located the residence for Martindale, and Hopkins came from the 1810 vermont census. Most companies elected their Captains, but nothing is cast in concrete. An interesting note is that there was also a Leonard Burns in this Regiment. There is no listing for a Leonard Barnes, or Leonard Barrons that served anywhere in the war of 1812.
