    1. [VERMONT] East Wallingford 12/11/1885
    2. Ruth Barton
    3. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, December 11, 1885 East Wallingford 12/11/1885 Mrs. Viola S. CHASE was baptised and united with the church, on Sunday, Nov. 29th. Sherwin HART's little girl Ethel is quite sick with fever, but is beginning to improve slowly. The latest arrival is a bran-new blacksmith, weight 10 pounds. Henry thinks he will soon have some help about shoo-ing. Two old citizens in this vicinity passed away, last week--Volney SHIPPY's father at Bowlville, and Thomas HORTON of Centerville. They were both quite aged. RUSSELL has just got through making cider. O. M. PELSUE has been making quite extensive repairs upon his house, outside and inside, looking as though business is prosperous with him, if it has been a hard year for farmers. Chauncey POWELL's infant son, Freddie, died of erysipelas, after severe suffering, on Tuesday night, Dec. 1st. Funeral at the house, Friday, the remains being interred at Cuttingsville. Mrs. Martha THOMPSON was buried at Sugar Hill cemetery, last week, having been stricken with paralysis nearly a year ago and lain in a helpless condition much of the time since, not knowing her own folks. Mrs. Jewett HAWKINS is on the sicklist, which prevented her attending the W. R. C. meeting on Saturday night, and also kept the G. A. R. post commander at home. They were both missed very much. Splendid sleighing, since Thanksgiving, and the lumbermen are improving it in hauling wood and logs, for they are expecting a Mount Holly thaw, soon, after which there will be a good deal of shoveling and some tunneling, with a little swearing. Johnathan SMEAD is disabled by a broken arm, caused by slipping down on Thanksgiving day. He immediately sent to Troy and obtained some patent thing to wear on his boot heels. He says he can walk on ice now, and keep right-side up; but he locked the barn after the horse was stolen. Regular meeting of the G. A. R. and W. R. C., on Saturday night, Dec. 19th. Comrades, do not forget to come and bring your better halves, for they are needed there; and have them invite their loyal lady friends to join. It is a noble work, and the ladies were not backward in the dark days of war, in doing many kind and loving deeds for the soldiers; and I trust they will not be backward now in joining the ranks of the W. R. C. Transcribed by Ruth Barton -- Ruth Barton [email protected] Dummerston, VT

    2. Ruth Barton
    3. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, December 11, 1885 North Shrewsbury 12/11/1885 Fred LEFEVER has been home for a week's stay. Sam PAGE is at work in the yard for N. J. A. & Co. Eugene KNIGHT has bought the Alonso RUSSELL place, for $1,200. Oliver BARRETT is going to work for D. W. COOK, driving oxen in the woods. Dea. Willard GUILD attended the A. C. Quarterly Conference at Cavendish. Lyman COLBURN has hired the widow WRIGHT's house, and will move immediately. The Northam wedding band was out to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Geo. WHITNEY, on their return from their wedding trip. A good time for all. Young people's parties are all the rage, now. They had one at Ed ALDRICH's, last Thursday evening, with about twenty-five present. There will be another at Oliver BARRETT's, Friday evening. Willie ALDRICH went to Johnsburg, N. Y., on a collecting tour for L. E. LORD; but as H. E. HEWITT was not prepared to settle or pay the debt, he came back a little poorer in pocket, but richer in experience and understanding with New York state laws. 3. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, December 11, 1885 Cuttingsville 12/11/1885 Mr. and Mrs. M. J. HOLDEN are anticipating opening a dancing-school at Union hall, next week. We think such gatherings are far preferable to all-night dances. Dan BUTTERFIELD has opened his school for juveniles, and promises to show the best string of young trotters on Spring Lake, this winter, that ever crossed its frozen borders. It is considered by all, without a dissenting voice, that our present winter school, taught by Miss Jennie PATTERSON, is the most satisfactory and ably-conducted of any for years. Teddy HIGGINS an industrious Irishman who has been track-walker on ----------years, has heired a fortune in the old country, and has gone there to receive it. The funeral of William SHIPPY, a former resident of this town, who died at Bowlville, a few days ago, and who had withstood the ills and misfortunes of life eighty-seven years, was attended by children and grand-children abundantly able to defray his funeral expenses, yet refused to, and allowed him to become a town charge. Our poormaster, W. L.BUCKLIN, buried him at the expense of the town; yet we are sending missionaries to convert the heathen. The old WEBB homestead, in this village, was the scene of a brilliant assemblage, last Tuesday, to witness the marriage of Miss Annie H. WEBB to E. C. JOHNSON, head clerk in Dawley & Co.'s mammoth store, Rutland. The house was beautifully decorated with fresh, fragrant flowers, and during the arrival of the guests Knabe's grand upright piano was sending forth its richest, sweetest notes, in response to deftly-touched keys by fair hands. The hymenal halter was politely and properly adjusted by the Rev. Mr. GILLIS, and gracefully accepted by the blushing bride and groom in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. The presents were not numerous, but rich and appropriate. Restless steeds were in readiness at the door to convey the happy couple to the railroad depot, where they took the train for Niagara Falls, to return via Boston. Miss Annie is a beautiful girl, with sufficient vivacity to make any home cheerful and happy, and Edward is a genial, affable fellow, with sterling business qualities that will prove a success in life. We count for them a long life of perpetual sunshine, with no tempests or squalls such as often sweep the surface of life's stormy ocean, wrecking many fond hopes and long-cherished anticipations. 3. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, December 11, 1885 Mount Hollly 12/11/1885 Hiland HOLDEN has been appointed assignee of Wm. LORD's insolvent estate, and has an auction the 24th. Rev. Dr. MASON of Boston, Mass., will address the people of this place at the Baptist church, next Sunday. Mrs. Judson PACKER is at present experiencing the general results of a vaccinated arm--something by which most everyone, during the past season, has realized the full value of their money. The school in district No. 5 commenced last week, Monday, with the same teacher--Miss Sarah BUFFUM--as taught the school last summer with such excellent satisfaction. The school includes about 33 scholars. Transcribed by Ruth Barton -- Ruth Barton [email protected] Dummerston, VT

    3. Hi Harriet: Thanks for your response to my post. Are ref's to surnames given in the book ? If so, might you consider seeing if the name Caroline (nee POWER) O'KELLY/KELLY of Shelburne is shown ? I am not against purchasing source info (i.e.books etc. - I have quite a library) but to buy one on the chance that one name *might* be shown seems a bit foolish. I would be most grateful for any help that you might be able to give me & do thank you, in advance. 3. That is a book, published by Vermont Old Cemetery Association. We got ours at the Vermont Historical Society. "Every" cemetery is listed in Vermont, not the details of what is on the stones. Laid out by country, map thereof and description of when the cemetery was established, & active or not ( I have to chuckle a little when I use that re cemeteries) It’s a useful tool, a lot of work has been put into the book. 8 1/2 x 11 500 pp. The latest publication is 1981, so I am not comfortable giving out a lot of details. Usually it is the local historical societies who make an effort to collect ALL the data on each stone at each cemetery. That's all! for now Harriet

    3. I believe the 'Village Yard Cemetery' would be the Pleasant View Cemetery. Located on Route 30 on the southern end of the village. It is located at the site of the Baptist Church that burned down and was a part of the churchyard. There is no other cemetery in the village. One of the projects that the Jamaica Historical Foundation has going on, is to document, photograph and put on our new website, every cemetery and gravestone. We have gone to every cemetery in town except for the Pleasant View Cemetery (which is the largest) and a couple of small private ones. Our new website should be up on the web soon, although the cemetery info is not quite ready to put on there yet.
