Bev and Mary Anne, I have reviewed and analyzed some census records to assist you in your research. These are my findings: The 1900 census for Lawrence Okelley listed both Florence and Minnie Westover as daughters. I next checked the 1880 census for Melvina and found that Melvina LaVaulett and a John Westover were working and living in the Curtis Andrew's residence. This led me to search the entries in the St Joseph Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont where Lawrence is buried. *** Melvina Westover O'Kelly (1858-1932), wife number 2, is buried there. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=51417023&PIpi=27576456 In response to Mary Anne, since the 1900 census lists Margaret Okelley and Minnie Westover in the same household, and since Caroline died in 1893, Margaret is the daughter of Lawrence and Caroline. A son, William, and other children was also born to Lawrence & Caroline. The other children listed in the 1900 & 1910 censuses include Patrick, Walter, Charles, Melvina, who are children of Lawrence and Melvina. Since the 1910 census states that Melvina had seven children born to her, there should be one more. Therefore, Florence and Minnie were childen from Melvina LaValette's first marriage to John Westover. Hope this helps! The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, January 4, 1889 Brownsville 1/4/1889 The prophecies of an open winter have thus far proved correct. Dec.31st, W. H. The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, January 4, 1889 Chester 1/4/1889 The snow is not, although the rollers are ready for business--one a monster, for highways, the other smaller, for sidewalks. They were built by Ethan HALL, and only awaiting the advent of snow to test their ability for improving our winter roads. At the annual meeting of the Baptist Sunday-school, E. A. BURNETTE was elected superintendent; Mrs. TILDEN, first assistant; J. E. POLLARD, second assistant; F. W. ADAMS, secretary; Avery PARK, treasurer; W. O. DAVIS, librarian; Ed DAVIS, assistant librarian. Pastor TILDEN of the Baptist church has been seriously ill, but is now recuperating. Rev. Mr. PREBLE of Ludlow supplied the pulpit for him last Sunday, and will again the next. At a meeting of the creditors of Jerome W. WEST of Andover, Wm. P. DODGE of Chester was chosen assignee, to settle and close up the estate. Mrs. A. S. HOLBROOK of Colorado Springs, with the body of her mother, Mrs. JOHNSON, arrived here Thursday, on the evening train. The funeral was held in the Baptist church, Friday morning, Rev. Mr. TILDEN officiating. Mrs. JOHNSON formerly resided here, but for the past few years has lived with her daughter, Mrs. HOLBROOK, at Colorado Springs. She was the mother of N. O. JOHNSON formerly of Chester. She was one of the oldest members of the Baptist church here. Her age was 83 years. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie P. DODGE have returned from their bridal trip, and have set up housekeeping at the Depot. Dr. EMERSON is having a severe time with a felon on his finger, but medical skill has so far subdued the stubborn thing that the doctor is able to resume visits to his patients who have not passed the need of medical treatment during the interim of his forced retirement. Mrs. PERKINS, who was so badly injured in the carriage accident, last fall, has so far recovered as to be able to be carried to her father's (Joseph HOLT) home in Hartland, last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. WILLARD going with her and returning Wednesday afternoon. Henry LOONEY, who has been for some time at work in Montpelier, at the upholstering business, is now in the employ of Charles WALKER, having the charge of the upholstering department in his furniture factory. My grandfather was an adoptee, and he even he was denied access to his original birth certificate before he died. Now that he has passed, we have absolutely no way of gaining access to his records. This was a source of huge emotional stress for him, and I would like to uncover what I can in order to see his mission through. He was adopted by a HOWARD family in Townshend, Windham Co. in the late 1920s or early 1930s. His adoptive parents told him his birth name was FORTIN. Does anyone happen to know anything about a FORTIN who entrusted her son with someone else around that time? Or does anyone have advice from experience navigating the draconian Vermont adoption records system? I'm honestly not out to embarrass a birth mother or to uncover any tawdry secrets...my grandfather just desperately wanted to know who he came from, and it would be nice to put this one to rest. It's mind-boggling what they keep sealed that would be completely available in most other states. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Just to tell you that I do enjoy these little clippings from the Bygone Days in Vermolent. So, please do continue to post them! I know it involves some time and work, so want you to know that there are people out here who do look for them!!! Some of my ancestors were in Ludlow, in Vermont around Bellows Falls, so I am interested in what their lives were like at that time. So stay tuned. I'm sure some of you have found some items humorous, some brutal and some shocking in their political uncorrectness, according to the customs of TODAY. Some I almost didn't include but decided they were important at the time, and that's the way they wrote about them, and if we want to get the full picture we need to see it "warts and all." The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, January 4, 1889 Ascutneyville 1/4/1889 Charles UPHAM returned from Keene, one day last week. He has given up cutting shoes, for the present, on account of his arm. On the 26th of December frogs were heard to peep in a pond not far from here. At our spelling match, last Friday, Mrs. James ELLIS (nee Nellie BOYNTON) was the victor. After exhausting all there was in the spelling-book, it was necessary to open Webster's dictionary to produce the desired effect. Our sick-list is as follows: L. H. BAILEY on the gain; Miss Clara THRASHER about the same; John FARWELL on the decline. Mrs. L. H. BAILEY is in Boston visiting friends. D.W. C. THRASHER has sold his dry wood to C. M. BROWN of Claremont, and Mr. B. has commenced to draw the same. Miss L. E. NEWHALL, after spending her vacation at home, returned to her school at Rockville, Conn., Tuesday. E. F. BRISTOL discovered, Monday morning, on going to the mill to work, that some one had made several holes in his pen-stock. Transcribed by Ruth Barton -- Ruth Barton [email protected] Dummerston, VT
The Vermont Tribune, Ludlow, Friday, January 4, 1889 North Springfield 1/4/1889 The J. W. LOCKWOOD house has again changed owners, John F. SPAFFORD of Ludlow being the purchaser. R. A. SPAFFORD will occupy it as formerly. It is said that Lyman LITCH of Baltimore has given his property to Foster HAMMOND, in consideration of support through life. D. J. BOYNTON has hired one of the town teams, and now with a supply of snow he will make the logs fly. A donation was given Elder O. E. C. F. WHEELER has moved his watch-repairing business into BALDWIN's shop, near the post-office. Bert WEST, who spent several weeks here this fall, went back to Boston, last week; but we see he has returned again. Edna ROUND has finished her labors at the hotel here and gone home. James PHALAN was also arrested for disorderly conduct, and sentenced to two months at the house of correction; but not being satisfied with the sentence he appealed to County Court, but failed to furnish bail, and was sent to Woodstock, probably for a longer time than to have served his original sentence.
