    1. [VAYORK-L] Wells Land Grant, Old Albemarle NC, c1663
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I am trying to establish some parameters on the individuals identified in the "Mount" Wells land grant that is abstracted below. Note this is an exact transcription of the entry from the book "Old Albemarle and Its Absentee Landlords" by Worth S. Ray. (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1976) "LT. (or ST.) MOUNT WELLS, 600 acres on the West side of the Chowanokee River, running by land lately surveyed for JAMES MURDOH, running East, etc. Dated September 25, 1663, and for the transportation of 12 persons, among whom were THOMAS POORE, JOSEPH HILL, THOMAS HIGH, JAMES WHITE, THOMAS BAYLEY and THOMAS and WILLIAM WOOD." The author notes that the Wells Family (he also refers to them as "Wills") came from the York-James City peninsula of VA and that they used the same Christian names in both locations. He further speculates that they are the same family. This area in NC eventually became Chowan and then Bertie County. 1. Who was "Mount" Wells, and did he ever actually move to NC? 2. Did any of his "transportees" actually move to NC? 3. Has anyone identified any of the children of either the Thomas or William Wood mentioned in the abstract? Thanks for any comments. Brett F.
