Fellow Virginia Researchers: I am looking for John HYDE and wife Jane HANSFORD, who are said in Underhill genealogy books to be the parents of Robert HYDE/HIDE, who d. before 1718 in York Co VA,. His wife was Jane UNDERHILL, who was the daughter of John Underhill and unk. earlier wife before Mary in his will. John UNDERHILL died in 1672 in York Co. (will abstract at the end of this post). Robert Hyde is said to have been kin to Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, Chancellor of England, father-in-law of King James II, etc.etc.. according to family lore, including a reference cited in several written sources, including a late 1800s issue of the almost-never-documented (family genealogies and histories that is) Wm and Mary Quarterly in its early days. His grandson, John Hyde Saunders, Sr., is said to have named one of his sons, Chancellor, in honor of the long deceased Clarendon. I descend through Robert & Jane (Hyde) Underhill's daughter Mary (sometimes Susannah) who married John SAUNDERS. Mary was his first wife. This John Saunders d.1736 in Goochland VA and was the son of John Saunders (d. 1700 York Co) and Mary RISLE, who was the daughter of John RISLE/RISLEY of York Co. Not only have I found headrights claimed for both John Underhill (and simultaneously good friend I think Sarah MOUNTFORT, as John Underhill Jr. request Thomas Mountfort to be his guardian later on) and John Risle across the bay in Accomack VA 1664 (separate claimants), but I am well aware of the extensive court records in York Co in the late 1600s for John Risle, Robert Hyde and John Underhill. I am also aware that Robert Hyde was not what one would call a model husband or father. And I am also aware of the involvement, to his ultimate demise, of a John Hansford with Bacon's Rebellion, but initial research, and so far not extensive, has not enabled me to find a relationship of either John Hyde or Mary Hansford, to John Hansford. Finally, I know there were further Hyde/Hansford connections. Robert Hyde and Jane (Underhill) Hyde's grandson (through son Samuel) John Hyde who married Lucy Hansford, daughter of Charles Hansford. This John Hyde's will was probated in 1774, according to the Underhill information. Thank you in advance, Best Regards, Janet Hunter....John Underhill's will abstract p. 37 Will of John Underhill of Hamton Parish, York Co., "very sicke in body" To son John Underhill, all that land on Felgates Creek in York Co.
