Previously posted history of James Shaler Gilley Family and Offspring, and efforts towards location of Clarice Pearl Gilley - second wife, and son James by this second marriage. The Death Cert. of Clarice Pearl Gilley was received and info from that was posted. Contact with Phyllis Bays, who was the informant of the death of Clarice happened to live at the same address in Louisville, Ky - Jefferson County. I took a chance and wrote, with request to forward if necessary. Received a very nice reply from Phyllis, which I will paraphrase for brevity purposes (Until we read the death certificate of James Shaler, we were unaware - at least I was - that he had remarried following death of first wife - Virginia Belle Lyburn in 1909. Only recently learned of the son-James from my brother ): Clarice Pearl Gilley was Phyllis Bay's mother, who had been widowed when Phyllis was approx. 5 yrs. old. Her brother - James Shaler, Jr. (the James we knew nothing about) suffered a fall about the time James Shaler Sr. was dying - died in 1940 when Clarice was 27 yrs. old. He was 60. As a result of the fall, James, Jr., is handicapped mentally and physically - now convalesing at the Golden Years Rest Home in Jenkins, Ky. Clarice suffered stroke, , which prevented her usual activities, and resided with Phyllis for 19 yrs, and died in Louisville, Ky in 1973. She is buried at the Blair Cem. in Whitesburg, Ky, beside James Shaler, Sr's grave. A plot is set aside for James Shaler Jr. at the same site. Clarice's parents - see prior notices- died when she was 12 yrs. old, and was an only child. Phyllis, like some of us from James Langley Gilley's side of the family - he being the son of James Shaler Sr., from the first marriage, did not know of the existence of our side of the Gilley family, until I wrote to her making certain inquiries. We did not know of Phyllis at all. I wrote to the Letcher County Historical/Genealogical Society in Whitesburg, KY, to inquire as to what is required to tap into information about our family, but have yet to hear anything. Learned of some articles appearing in the Mountain Eagle Newspaper, Circa: 1937-1944 covering Letcher County activities and await the receipt of three which have to do with my Father's exploits while playing baseball in the Ky-River League. Another has the Obit on James Shaler Gilley, Sr. The last is on one - Edgar Gilley - await to see what that is, as may not be of same family. Information on Virginia Belle Lyburn remains a mystery. We assume she is buried in Whitesburg, Ky too. Perhaps James Shaler, Jr. is there as well. However, we know that James Shaler Gilley's people and immediate off-spring lived in Stonega-Appalachia, Va. James Shaler's father - Tayler Gilley (my g/g/father) was from Lee Co, Va. Unless and until the Historical Societies loosen up for us, we are sorely hampered in learning more about Tayler and Virgnia Belle. Vital Statistics in Richmond can not assist because of the period pre-dating their accummulation of data. Now requires an attempt via the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Va. who have records of birth and death records prior to 1896, and marriage records prior to 1936. Unfortunately, I live in Altamonte Springs, Fl., and the Va. State Library will not lend their microfilm to out-of-state Libraries for me to view and copy. With the exception of the years of 1986 to 1912, the VirginiaDiv. of Vital Records has records of Birth, deaths and marriages since 1853. No records prior to that date, and there was no law for the registration of births and deaths between 1896 and June 14, 1912. Any genealogical research must be done in the Archives Division of at the Va. State Library Copies of records on file with the Va. Div of Vital Records can be obtained upon application and payment of a fee of $8.00 per copy. In the Va. Div of Vital Records, death, marriage, and divorce data become public information fifty (50) years from the date of the event, and birth records become public information after a hundred (100) years from the date of birth. Didn't mean to be so long, but perhaps someone will appreciate what one must endure in tracing loose ends, and what is bureaucratically required on information that is public. Requires either personal search or the hire of someone to do it for you. Once we hear further, will advise. Am copying this to the KYROOTS and GILLEY-L Roots people, as well. Peace, Tim :-}}} (Altamonte Springs, Fl. )
