OUTLAW POTTER, A VICTIM OF HIS OWN REVOLVER Member of a notorious Gang of Desperadoes Accidentally Kills Himself in Dickenson COEBURN, VA., July 14 [Special] - New has just been received here from Dickenson county that Garfield Potter, one of the gang of Kentucky outlaws, who have been terrorizing the people of Cumberland mountain and the adjacent country recently, let his pistol fall from his belt, which caused a discharge, the ball taking effect just below the left nipple and killing him almost instantly. The gang with which Potter associated, besides several women, included George Potter, Garfield Potter, George Fleming, Creed Fleming, and others who came and went as suited their convenience. These Flemings are closely related to Cal and Henan Fleming, who, together with Doc Taylor murdered the Mullins family as Pound Gap in ‘92. These men took part in the Vance-Vanover feud on Elkhorn Creek, in Kentucky, last spring, and had to leave there, after which they took up quarters in an old log cabin on the Virginia side near Osborn’s Gap. They have since that time been a constant terror to the citizens by their lawlessness and threats of violence. Four of the gang were out on Pound river, a few miles from their “headquarters”, on the night before the accident occurred. They called at Harve Bryant’s about midnight where they spent the remainder of the night. After breakfast, the went out, and were sitting down at a game of cards when the fatal accident occurred. The father of the Potter boys, who lives in Kentucky, was told the news, and he came for the body of his son. Quite a number of the gang’s enemies also came over, all armed to the teeth. They found only George Potter of the gang, and agreed that he might go across “the line” to see his brother buried; and then take his chances of escape. There are several felony indictments pending against George in the court of Pike County, and they will probably land him in jail to answer for his wrong doings. Great excitement prevails there, as part of this gang are supposed to be in hiding among the mountains, and it is feared that there will be depredations committed by them. OUTLAW KILLED FREELING, VA., Aug. 13 -(SPL)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him "Son" Mullins one of the gang was with Potter in a house, but escaped. Potter fought desperately up to the end. Sixteen balls were found to have entered his body. One of the posse was cut across the face by a bullet from the outlaw’s pistol. GEORGE POTTER KILLED AFTER BATTLE FOR LIFE THE CRIMINAL FOUGHT DESPERATELY, BUT FINALLY PERISHED WITH SIXTEEN BULLETS IN HIS BODY FREELING, VA., Aug 12 -(Special)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him upon a warrant charging him with the crime of assault. “Son” Mullins, one of the gang, was with Potter in a house, where the officers found them; but he escaped, though it is thought he was fatally shot. Potter fought desperately to the end. Sixteen balls entered his body; his head was frightfully mangeled. One of the officers men was cut across the face by a ball from the outlaw’s pistol, two more were shot through another’s hat, while a third had a hole put through his vest. It is probable that the relatives of the dead man will take his remains to their home in Kentucky for internment. Potter has also been in the penitentiary of Kentucky and North Carolina. Potter’s wife (with whom he has been living for some time) says that he has killed four men to her knowledge. His father has paid over thousands of dollars to defend him while in the hands of the law. ONLY THIRTY YEARS OLD George Potter was bout thirty years old and had served three terms in the penitentiaries of as many states. He was sent to the Virginia pernientiary from Washington county for horse-stealing, served a term in the North Carolina penitentiary for robbery, and also a term in the Kentucky penitentiary for stealing cattle. He was wanted in Tennessee for killing a boy who refused to give him some liquor in which he was in charge. A few days before his death, Potter boasted of his record saying that he had killed four men and shot twelve. He had many times declared that he would never be taken alive--that not even his Creator could arrest him--and upon these occassions he would use language that it would be sacreligious to repeat. --part0_911017071_boundary--
