Relative to further researching the Gilley/Gilly descendancy, in hopes of pulling in the final pieces of the puzzle as they apply to certain individuals about whom we have yet to uncover, whether it be birth, marriage and/or death records in the states of VA, KY, or WVA.. There were numerous Francis Gilleys who were scattered in several areas of Virginia, especially in Henry Co, and Patrick County, Va.: 1. Francis Gilley, Sr., b. cir 1730 England, came to Henry Co. Va. and died in 1791. Wife: Elizabeth ______? d. 1786. 2. iii - Francis Gilley, Jr. b. cir 1759. Son of Francis Gilley, Sr. 3. iii - Francis "Frank" Gilley, b. cir 1786, Son of Richard Gilley. 4. iii - Francis Gilley, b. abt 1793, Son of Francis Gilley, Jr. It would appear that none of the above "Francis" #2 thru #4 are the descendant from Francis Gilley, Sr., b. Cir. 1730 we are looking for but rather Francis Gilley, b. abt 1779 in Buckingham Co., Va., m. Orra "Orey" unknown, 1805 and died in Lee County, VA., 1858. Francis died 03-20-1848 in Lee Co. Va. Francis Gilley, b. 1779, parented 10 children, one of whom was Joseph Gilley, b. abt 1820 in Lee Co., Va. Wife: Delia "Lilly" Elkins, b. ca. 1825. She was daughter of Catherine . b. 1795. Alfred Taylor Gilley, b. 1840, was one of 9 children by Joseph and Delia Gilley, in Lee Co. Va. He married Mary E. "Polly" Bolling/Bowling, 06-06-1859 in Letcher Co., Ky. Some records show the wife was Mary Elizabeth Maggard. Alfred Taylor and Mary Ann parented 7 children, the 7th being James Shaler Gilley,b. 01-30-1880, Eolia, Letcher Co., Ky. d. 12-23-1940, McRoberts, Ky. First wife: Va. Belle Wilburn (or Lyburn), m. 1899 in Wva. She died 02-09-1909, where unknown. 2nd Wife: Clarice Pearl Banks, m. 06-19-1937 Whitesburg, Ky. Children from 1st marriage: Lenore - 07-18-1903, Stonega, Wise Co., Va. James Langley - 12-18-1906, Richlands, Tazewell Co. Ky. Edward - 1907 or 1908. Unknown where born or when died. Died in infancy. Children by 2nd marriage: James Shaler, Jr. - 07-24-1938, Jenkins, Letcher Co., Ky. (Still living) Burial: James Shaler Gilley, Sr., and Clarice Pearl Banks are buried at Dianah Blair Cemetery in Whitesburg, Ky. Lenore Gilley married/divorced from Eugene Luther Williams of Davy, Wva., 1920, She remarried to J. B. Byrd. She died in Norfolk, Va., 1957. James Langley Gilley, d. 1979, m. Susan Frances Bragg Gilley, 1928, d. 1991. Both buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Bluewell, Wva. Issues to resolve: 1. Correct name of Alfred Taylor Gilley's Wife - Mary Ann "Polly"Bolling/Bowling, or Mary Elizabeth Maggard. The latter name is unknown, as well as where she was born, or died. Nothing on her parents. As for Polly Bolling, that is the name shown as the mother of James Shaler Gilley on his Death Certificate. The marriage bond record shows Mary Ann Gilley, as the wife of Alfred Taylor Gilley. 2. Death Certificate of James Shaler Gilley shows date of Birth as 01-30-1880. Some lineage records show him merely as - James, b. 12-02-1878. Census records for Letcher Co., Ky., for 1880 show - James, 1 yr of age. This would tend to support the 1880 birth date as being the correct date. 3. Virginia Belle Wilburn (or Lyburn) as the 1st wife of James Shaler Gilley, wed 1899, in Wva. , according to Obituary in Mt. Eagle Newspaper. So far, nothing as to birth, marriage or death record on her in Va., KY, or WVA. Death Cert. of James Langley Gilley shows his mother as Va. Belle Lyburn (not Wilburn), and father as TAYLER Gilley. 4. Obituary suggested that James Shaler and Va. Belle Wilburn parented two daughters. There is no evidence as to a second daughter, but rather Edward, who died in infancy. James Edward Gilley, son of James Langley Gilley, still living, was named after Edward. Need birth and death records on Edward. 5. Mary Ann "Polly" Bowling - we have reviewed the descendancy lists on Benjamin and Jeremiah Bolling/Bowling. There are many Mary "Polly" either as Gilleys by birth, or by marriage. Some are Bollings/Bowlings, but married other men than Alfred Taylor Gilley. She can not be located. There are two isolated. One born in 1838, but no evidence she ever married. The other b. 1805, but this date puts her as to old to have married Alfred Taylor, b. 1841, in 1859. The closeness in her birth date of 1838 and his of 1841, makes them likely to be the marriage we are looking for. BUT WE CAN"T FIND HER! She was supposed to be from Letcher Co.Ky., and not from Lee Co., or Henry Co., Va. Can any of you provide any documentation, and other evidence to enable us to resolve the issues listed?
