The dead are R.J. and C. Noonchester, Robert and James Snow, Alonza Ritchie and Adolphus Gibbs. The injured are William Hearon, mine foreman, James Patterson, trapper, Thom. Ryan and Will Coleman. The cause of the explosion was probably the accumulation of gas in the mines, but this is not known, as a quantity of dynamite and powder were carried into the mines on the fatal morning of the disaster might have been due to that. Rescue work was begun at once with T.H. John, of this place, in charge, and the dead bodies were recovered Saturday night. Many people from nearby towns along the Clinch Valley visited the scene of the explosion Sunday, the morning train leaving here having been crowded to its fullest capacity.
