I actually have a picture of my brother holding this skull with what looks like a bullet hole in it! Does anyone know any stories around such a thing? Dianne in Ohio

    1. [VAWISE] Old Elizabeth Creech Cem or burying ground
    2. Marsil R. Creech
    3. I just recently was told that perhaps Jonathan Creech was buried on the land that he lived on when he died-1852. Was also told it was known as "The Old Elizabeth Creech Cem or burying groiund". Jonathan died in Lee Co VA in 1852 however most if not all of his land holdings apparently went with the parts of Lee Co VA that became Wise Co VA. Anyone know anything about this Old Elizabeth Creech Cem? Marsil in the land of UFO's, Aliens and weather balloons. Roswell, NM Shh-be very, very quiet. I am hunting forebears.

    3. I was recently in the Clintwood Courthouse and I saw a number of references to Columbus Phipps. His name was in the deed books as Court Clerk. There was also a P.?. Phipps who was a deputy clerk. One of the deeds I copied has both of these names on it. I also copied the will of E.L. Phipps who was a Dr. and it lists Sue Phipps as his wife, and sons Morris and Hibbert. It was written Jan 6, 1922 Probate date was June 24, 1927. If you have a connection E.L. Phipps, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the will. 1. [VAWISE] Searching for Brad Lane
    2. Wolff, Taj
    3. I'm searching for Brad LANE, who may have been in Wise Co. sometime between 1875 (my best guess for a birth date) and 1914. My only solid record of him is two Dickenson Co. Court records where he was paid for jury duty - one in 1914 and one in 1916. My searches for him in Dickenson Co. records before 1914 turned up nothing. Any info on this LANE family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ----------------------------------------------------------------- Taj Wolff

    1. [VAWISE] Alfred White, Wise Co. after 1860
    2. cschmidt
    3. Does anyone have any information on the family of Alfred White. He was born about 1807 in Ashe Co., NC, the son of Robert. He married Elizabeth Adamsabout 1845. Elizabeth was born 1828, NC or TN. The couple was in Grayson Co., Va. in 1850, and Wise Co., Va. in 1860. I can't find any other records on this family until 1900 Pike Co., KY, when Elizabeth was a widow, age 71, living with her son, John White, and his wife, Martha. I am trying to determine when Alfred died. Alfred had several siblings move to Wise Co with him. While he was in Grayson Co in 1850, his known siblings remained in Ashe Co., NC. However, by 1860, they were all in Wise Co. and eastern KY. They wer: Martha "Patsy" White,, born about 1800, married Joseph Phipps. He died in Ashe Co. abt. 1840. She died about 1856/60, Dickenson Co. Va., buried P. Lipps Place Nancy White, born about 1800/1803, married 1) George Phipps, who died before they moved to Wise, m2) James Adams, born about 1800, who appears in the 1860 census in Wise. Lydia White, never married, born about 1812, had several children. Frances "Fannie" White, born about 1810, married Peter Whitaker, 1830. Ended up in Letcher Co. after the move to Wise Co. Alfred White had the following children: McCager White, born 1847, married Freelove Wright. Sarah Ann White, born 1850, married James Reedy James H. White, born 1852 John W. White, born1857, married Martha? Malinda White, born 1859, married a Stanley Nancy Jane White, born 1860, married Mant Mullins Margaret White, born 1863, married Moses Bentley, moved to Greenup Co. later on Robert White, born 1866, moved to Greenup Co. later on William Albert White, born 1868, married H.T. Ball, 1891 Any help on this line, or any White's and Adams in the area at that time would be greatly appreciated. Carol

    3. Paul, I am waiting for the film to come into my local FHC. But I did note where John B. Willis is located on the Wise Cty., Census for 1880. Who ever is doing the look-up: ED#122, Sht 4, line 5 If you do not get a response before my film comes in, I will be happy to send that information to you as well. I am looking for David Jessee Willis born 1857, Russell Cty. Son of Richard and Martha (Williams) Willis. Grandson of Abe and Eve (Sifert) Willis. I can not seem to see David Jessee on the Soundex. His father, Richard, is still in Russell Cty., for the 1880. David appears on the 1900 in Wise Cty., VA.
