Hi there -- no comment on the 20 census, just a shot in the dark. My grandfather was Melvin Monroe Martin, about 1879 to Benjamin Meredith (or Meredith Benjamin) Martin and Mary Ann? Not sure exactly where he was born, but in the South for sure. His sibs were: Walker, Hassell, Virgie ( Burchette), and Adam. Like I said, a shot in the dark. Let me know if they ring a bell. Is there a reading of this cemetery? Could some one do a general lookup for me? Need CORDERS and SEXTONS... Thanks, Dianne in Ohio

4/16/01 Hi Wayne: . Perhaps someone has information on my above named gggrandparents. Their 1st daughter, ELIZA ADELINE JONES, b 09 Nov 1863 in Sullivan Co TN, m my great grandfather CALEB MILTON SEAL(E)(S), ( b 04 Apr 1854 Rose Hill, Lee Co VA) 23 Oct 1879 (not sure where). ELIZA was the oldest of 18 children according to family tradition. Some of her siblings are: CAL who m. MOLLY, BILL who m DORA, "DOC" and JIM. These siblings all stayed in BOONE and MONTGOMERY COs in IN after the families moved there sometime in the 1880's. I am hoping that perhaps someone may have information on an "incident" that occurred either in LEE CO VA or surrounding area, probably betweeen 1884 and 1886. It seems that my ggrandfather, CALEB SEAL, and my gggrandfather, SAMUEL JONES, and probably others, were involved in the "accidental death" of a fellow "fell" into a cave and died. I believe the incident was political, altho, back then it could have been some sort of feud, too. If anyone has information on any of the folks or the "incident" mentioned above, I would sure be happy to get it. I have much family info on the SEAL line from the late 1700's on forward that I will glad to share. Thank you to any one who has information or who can tell me where to look for it. Nancy/IL

We have added photos of Coke Ovens in Wise County, VA, fifteen more Lee County, VA historical pictures, a couple of biographies on the Fallen Miner Memorial page, a photo of the L and N Railroad, article reprints from the Appalachian Quarterly magazine, familylines and recollections of the Hicks family, the newest edition of the Old Timers Mining magazine and last but not least, the weekly statistics from the search engine so I know what everyone is looking for. I invite you to come see what everyone has shared. As always, Iook forward to getting your website submissions, requests and comments. Together, we are making this one pretty decent website. If anyone is researching the John & Dicy Ownes Ramey family that are on the 1850 Russell/ 1860 Wise Census, I have a picture of the Alexander Ramey family. Alexander was the oldest child of John & Dicy. He is shown on the 1850 Census , but have never located him in 1860. He isn't listed with his family at that time. He was about 14 years of age, and could of been staying with other family or have left home. He married Margaret Hutchins and they left Wise Co. in 1864. Other members of the Ramey family moved to Lawrence Co. KY, and to Meeker Co. Minnesota. The photo is in the 1890's. John Blair

Hi when I lived in Stonega Va, several years ago. I heard there was a man buried near the tracks there. May be the one you are talking about. Hello I am searching for the location of the grave of Alexander GOINS, who was shot and buried beside the railroad. Can anyone help me with this one? Thanks and HAPPY EASTER TO ALL Twanda
My mother had two siblings died when babies. They would have been born probably 1920/1930. She has always wanted me to find where they were buried, but all she can recall is that she went to school in what seemed to her to be the middle of a cemetery. I am assuming that perhaps the church was also used for a school. She probably would have been in 1st-3rd grade which would put it probably 1935- 1940. She said the old cemetery was on one side of where she went to school and the new cemetery on the other side. Not sure what area she attended school in, but they lived on Sandy Ridge. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I doubt there would be headstones, at least not engraved ones, but in case there are, the girl's name was Hazel ELKINS. The boy died so young that either they didn't name him or Mum just doesn't recall it. In any case, he would have been an ELKINS also. Also, does anyone know what happened to Ida FRANKS [she is buried in the Edwards Cemetery] after he husband died in 1929? The Wise Co site is down for a while since once again someone has hacked into my ftp site and locked me out. I'm working on fixing it again. Vic
I just went to the genweb project, clicked on VA, clicked on county links, clicked on Wise County and was promptly denied access because I don't have a shady banks.net user name and password. I thought all the GenWeb sites were open access!!! I found the marriage of my husband's grandparents, Edith NAMET(H) & Alex HEGEDUS at the Wise County website. However, I have not found the previous marriage of Alex HEGEDUS to Helen -- she died abt. 1818 during the flu epidemic, and they were married for only a short time. I'm wondering if your disc has this marriage -- would appreciate any help! Thank you, Ann > I have adisc wth all Wise Co. marriages from 1856 to 1999... > Gary Martin
