    3. I am certainly glad to get your letter this morning, and yes there is a lot of nostalgia, and I love it. I used to do a column in The Post and it was titled "I Love Memories" If they had the space, I think I would like to do that again, but. you know how that goes. I have even considered putting my memories into a book I will keep looking and if I find anyone who has a picture of the Osaka School I will get back in touch. I have another friend who lives in Texas and isn't it wonderful what we can do with computers? Of course I am still learning how to use mine. Vadna Sandra McBride wrote: > Thanks Vadna. This virus infects the address book file and sends messages to the contents of the file. 3. If your dad attended Appalachia High School, he could have lived in any of the coal camps- Derby - Arno- Dunbar- Stonega- Pardee-Osaka- Inman- Roda- Roaring Fork,- Imboden-Exeter-or Keokee{not sure}. or he could have lived in Appalachia. All the camps had grade schools but attended A.H.S. after completing 7th grade. We got to ride the bus, and I thought I was grown. Vadna Mendota is out of the "territory" I might have left out some of the camps. chory@earthlink.net wrote: > I'm enjoying this discussion, too. 3. Thanks Vadna. I checked the website and didn't find anything about Osaka school but enjoyed looking at other things. I haven't been back to Wise County since 1982 and sometimes I get so homesick. That is why I keep in touch with things through this list and checking out different sites. The Hills and Hollers site really brings back a lot of memories. I will make a plea to anyone who has a picture of Osaka school, I would love to have a copy. I recently made contact with a classmate from Osaka school, who I lost track of almost 50 years ago. She lives in Ohio (I live in Texas) and she is also looking for a picture. I'm sure anyone who hasn't lived and gone to school in the coal camps years ago can't understand the nostalgia we have. My family in Wise County consisted of Markland, Seabolt, Houston who married Kirk, Neeley, Bledsoe, Harris, Boyd, Smith (from Andover), and more. I think Lawrence Fields was partial to little girls. Didn't he have a lot of boys. He was a terrific guy, but could sure use the paddle on boys who stepped out of line. I don't remember him using the paddle on girls. 2. I'm enjoying this discussion, too. My dad, Howard MILLER, was born in Roda where he attended the first grade, then moved to Mendota, then I'm not sure where he lived when he attended Appalachia High School. Would he have lived in Appalachia, or could it have been one of the other nearby coal towns? Does anyone know what elementary school would have been in Roda & Mendota in the late 1920s? I have a videotape from the 1980s when he's traveling through Mendota, and he's pointing out where "Shepherd's store" used to be, and the school he attended was down the same street. Ann

    3. Yes, you have the right Lawrence Fields. I too remember that penny candy. I also got it free. I assumed it was because I was "kinfolk". He really was interested in the kids.I have lived in and around the coal camps all my life, so I went to school at Arno and that is where he taught me.{after we moved from Kellyview} I remember the school at Osaka, and do hope you can get a picture of it. Maybe Garnet Gilliam in Big Stone Gap, has one. Go to the Big Stone Gap web page and look in there. www.bigstonegap.org If not, I am sure you will enjoy the other pictures and looking in the archives of their guest book. 3. Now I have to join this discussion. I was born and raised in Osaka, moving away in 1952. Lawrence Fields was the principal at the school there. I assume he is the same person...he was crippled. I thought he was the greatest. He had penny candy that he sold at recess and at lunch and he would give me free candy. My mother graduated from AHS in 1937 (she was a Seabolt). By the way, I have been looking for a picture of the school in Osaka. It was torn down in the late 1950's or early 1960's. Also, I have relatives, a great grandfather (Samuel Houston) who was buried in Blackwood. Does anyone know about a cemetery there? 1. [VAWISE] Appalachia
    2. Did any of you (who are discussing Appalachian memories) attend the Appalachia High School Homecoming event last year? I had planned to go but didn't get to at the last minute. I haven't heard any follow-up about it and wondered how it turned out. I never did receive the book I ordered either -- did anyone else? My father graduated from Appalachia High in 1938 and I would loved to have met some of his classmates and a couple of his old girlfriends that I have pictures of. Also, the first wife of my husband's grandfather died in the 1918 flu epidemic in Wise County. They were only married for a short time -- I haven't been able to find out anything about her. All I know is her name was Helen, she was Hungarian, and she was married to Alex HEGEDUS. So if anyone comes across her name in one of the old cemeteries, please let me know. Thanks, Ann

    3. I am a little late answering mail. had to stop and cook supper. I do love to remember old time things with others. It is wonderful. Do you remember Lawrence Fields? He was a school teacher, married my second cousin. Bessie Barnett{e} I do believe he lived next door to a family named Honeycutt. I think the man was an engineer on the railroad. {My two sons are now}Might have been kin of yours. Thanks for the picture .I haven't looked at it yet, because I am too busy and too excited about answering mail. We lived at the foot of the hill, and acrossthe road from the little one room schoolhouse. I do remember the Malleys and we would race to the little knoll behind our house to wave . The engineers always waved back. Another engineer who lived on the hill above Mollie Moneyhun's store was Crumley Dickenson. I remember some of his children. I used to baby sit with the twins of Lawrence and Bessie's after they bought and moved into the house next door to the Honeycutts. Thanks for writing all these memories. Vadna "James S. 3. Vada my name is Jim Huneycutt, we lived in the brick house on the left coming into Appalachia. I remember all the names you mentioned. I remember the Roberts who had the child who had the birth defect. Do you remember the Neals that lived up there. I knew Carl Collins and have two books he published; one was pictures of trains and the other are old pictures of Appalachia and surrounding areas. 3. The only thing I can tell you about the Sam Rose I knew was married to Vada ? I do remember he drove an old truck{very very old} until he passed away. The truck as I understand was still going strong and one of his sons took it to another state. That is all I do remember though. sorry. 3. Hi, The mention of Sam Rose caught my interest. Which Sam Rose is buried in this cemetery? I'm doing research on the Rose Family. Sam is a name used frequently in the family.
