    3. Thanks Rhonda and fellow researchers. I really appreciate the help. These Collins are a real mystery. As Rodney said they probably didn't want to be found. From what I do have on them I realize they were a mixed bloodline. Meredith, and his first son Bradley, were listed as "Mullato" and "fpc" on 1810 & 1820 records of Floyd Co. Ky. On the 1820 record Millie Johnson and their son is listed as "slaves" . I have not found any of the other children listed as such but oral family histrory says they were "Indian" , supposely from one of the SE Colonial tribes. Archibald was a "tanner of leather goods" William was blacksmith/silversmith/who operated a gristmill on Tug Fork along with his brother John W. and William Jr. In going backward to 1797 I find Meredith listed in Wilkes Co. NC on land adjoining Vardy Collins. Always felt there was a connection between the two but no proof. I have communicated for a long time with Jack Goins and agree with him that Meredith and Vardy were kin , probably first cousins, grandsons of old Thomas Collins of Flatt River. http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/dillon1944/old_thomas_collins.htm Brenda Collins Dillon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rhonda Robertson" <rsr@mounet.com> To: <VAWISE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 7:43 AM Subject: [VAWISE] Early Wise County > Brenda, > > Even though Wise County was not formed until 1856...it's first known > settlement was prior to 1790 when John English was living in what is present > day St. Paul. 2. Wise Co wasnt' for until after 1850 so Meridith family would have been in Pike Co, KY before then. My ROBERTS & DAMERON came to Pike Co about 1806. The COLLINS were probably not wanting to be counted in anything.

    3. Brenda, Even though Wise County was not formed until 1856...it's first known settlement was prior to 1790 when John English was living in what is present day St. Paul. From that point on in the early Surveyor and Entry records for Russell, then Lee, then Scott you find entries for numerous individuals who were living within the bounds of present day Wise County. Even though their births, deaths and listings on census and tax lists indicate the above named counties they were actually within the bounds of Wise County and when Wise was formed actually had not moved an inch from their orginal settlements. I'm going to the Historical Society tonight and will check on this info for you. Nancy Brown and Rochelle Robinson are going to a couple of Collins cemeteries, by the way they lived on the Indian Creek and Birchfield sections near Pound and we'll let you know if they find anything. 3. Rhonda, Something you said in the listed posting made me stop and think. Meredith Collins was found on Russell Co. tax list as early as 1799 to 1809. He then removed to Floyd Co. which later became Pike Co. Kentucky. Now...what you said " Even though John is listed in Russell Co., VA he was probably living in the > same vicinity when it became Wise County." I have never in all my years of searching been able to find any record of this family other than the occasional tax list or census. No deeds, no marriage bonds, no birth records of his children. I have to admit that I have not really paid much attention to Wise County as he supposely left Russell Co. for Floyd Co. Is it possible I have been searching the wrong location? Would appreciate any info found on the following family: Meredith born 1760 Va ( RevWar 1776 Fincastle Co.) Mary "Polly" Holloway Collins born abt 1765-70 Bradley Collins born 1787 female Collins born bef 1795 (could be Amy/Anna) John W. Collins born 1797 Edward Collins born 1799 *Archibald Collins born 1800 *James Collins Born 1802 *female Collins *Reuben Collins *William Collins born 1806 * all supposely born Russell Co. Va. "Polly " Holloway Collins is a brickwall. She disappears off any records about 1812 and by 1815 Meredith is living with Millie Johnson and their son Levi Merdy Johnson-Collins. Millie is listed in Pike Co. records as his common law wife. Would appreciate any information if any exsists. Have a good day. Brenda Collins Dillon http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/dillon1944/

    3. Even though John is listed in Russell Co., VA he was probably living in the same vicinity when it became Wise County. I am searching my deeds in Russell County to determine when he obtained his land and the description of the location, but I'd be willing to bet he didn't move an inch. That where he originally settled near Flat Gap when it was in Russell County became Wise County in 1856. 2. I have a copy of the marriage license of John Hays that Rhonda mentioned, Ron or Misty let me know if you want a copy and I'll email it to you. Also have one for a Sarah Hays married 4/28/1858 to James Short and she also lists a John Hays as her father and birth place as Russell Co. And a Rebecca Hays married 8/29/1859 to James Mullins (she is listed as age 19 and her husband as 67), John Hays listed as father, Russell Co also. Rhonda do you have copies of these? Vic

    3. I did a little research before posting some additional information on the Hayes/Hays family and the Jonathan Hayes tombstone that we found on Sunday. According to the marriage license for the Jonathan Hayes (Civil War Soldier) in Wise County, VA he married on August 18, 1859 in Wise County. He listed his father's name as John Hayes. On the 1860 Wise County, Va census, I found the following: #362 Hay, John, born 1793 and wife Senah #366 Hays, Jonathan, born 1838, wife Malvina #369 Hayes, John, born 1817 These three families live in the exact area of the tombstone for Jonathan Hayes. From Jonathan (Civil War) marriage license we know he must the son of the John in household 369. Also in household 369 is James Hayes who also served in the Civil War. The John born 1793 is most probably not the Jonathan born 1777 as there is too wide a span in the years. Could the Jonathan, born 1777 be a brother of the John, born 1793? Any ideas? Rhonda

    2. Greetings to all
    3. this is great ! that finally the Hayes / Hays family line of Wise county is being discussed here on the list. I have waited a long time for this. Yes there were other John Hayes/Hays but I think if we consider the dates we are talking about , there probably were not many at that point , and mostly related I would guess. Misty, thank you for the added information on Russell county, My family group of Hayes were living around Russell county, it seems that the reason as I know it that John Sr. decided to move to Wise county was when Jonathan and Melvina married , grandpa Daniel H. Short may have played a roll in keeping the family there, also the Short and Bollins have had close family ties for generations so it is not surprising to find this Jonathan Hayes among the Bolling family . Also since Melvina was living in Wise county at the time of the war, and Jonathan had not come home, that may have been the biggest motivation for John Sr. to live in Wise county. Also, if this Jonathan Hayes is a relative of Jonathan Jr. and Melvina, he only lived a few years after their marriage and died the same year we believe Jonathan Jr. did as a POW. 1865 I would like to note, that at least in my family , the spelling of this name has shown up most always as Hayes, espcially in more recent times, but we do know that the old John spelled it Hay/Hays To everyone else, reading along as this story unfolds, I hope you don't mind the exchange of information to the list. thanks to everyone who shares. 2. For those of you that are interested in Jonathan Hayes, I have the photos Rhonda sent me posted on the <A HREF="http://www.shadybanks.net/Wise2">shady banks site</A> of his very interesting burial site! The link is under the cemetery and burial section. Even if this isn't your family line, take at look at Jonathans final resting place! Vic

    3. Hello Rhonda, Ron (and all others,) I find these postings quite intriguing. I too have a John Hay(s)(es) in my ancestry who also was living in the Pound,VA area. My g-g-grandmother was Sarah "Sally" Hays who married John Phillips. Her father was John Hay. I've gone over the 1840 & 1850 Russell County and 1860 Wise County Census records, and they show he was married to a lady named Celia (Senal (?) on the 1860 one.) They had 3 children; Sarah "Sally", Ambrose and [another] John. On the 1860 Wise County Census, my g-g-g-grandparents, "John and Senal Hay" were living next door to my g-g-grandparents, John and Sarah "Sally" Phillips in Pound. On the 1870 Wise County Census, my g-g-g-grandparents, are not listed. So the "Jonathan Hayes" you found the headstone for, could possibly be an ancestor of mine too. :-) Oh and one last thing, there are members of my family still residing in the Flat Gap area as well. Looking forward to finding out who gets to claim this one. :-) Many thanks to you and Nancy for locating and sharing this finding. Still stumped in my family tree, Misty D. Hodges dm_hodges@planttel.net P.S. There is a Bollings or two found amongst my family lines also. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greetings to all" <semperfi@willapabay.org> To: <VAWISE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 5:27 PM Subject: Re: [VAWISE] Jonathan Hayes > Hi there, > > So you are thinking that the headstones would belong to a grandfather > Jonathan Hayes and not the father John Hayes , father to civil war > Jonathan Hayes. 2. Greetings to all
    3. Hi there, So you are thinking that the headstones would belong to a grandfather Jonathan Hayes and not the father John Hayes , father to civil war Jonathan Hayes. I had not thought about there being 3 John Hayes/Hays in a row . The only spouce I know for certain is as I mentioned, Melvina Short. also shown as Vina , Vinie etc. She is buried at one of the Bolling graveyards. Beside her are some of her grandchildren. She died at about age 35 or 38, very young. George WA. Bolling married again . my connection would be as follows. Ron Black Sr. - myself Shirley Holbrook - Mother Norma Sturgill of Flatgap - grandmother Mary Standifer - Gordon Sturgill / flatgap - g grandparents Mary Elizabeth Hayes - d/o Civil WarJonanthan /married Frank Standifer- gg grandparents Melvina Short d/o Daniel H. Short - Jonathan Hayes s/o John Hays ggg grandparents. 2nd husb. George Wa. Bolling the two daughters of Melvina and Jonathan - Mary Elizabeth Hayes also known as Mary E. C. Hayes and Martha Hayes . Martha raised as a Bolling, she married Joseph Wiley Adams, all from around Flat Gap , Wise county Va. Hope this info helps some, glad to help all I can. cousin Ron , in WA. state ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rhonda Robertson" <rsr@mounet.com> To: <VAWISE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 4:24 AM Subject: Re: [VAWISE] Jonathan Hayes > Ron, > > I'm not sure, but I believe this Jonathan Hayes is the grandfather of > Jonathan who married Melvina Short and fought in the Civil War. 3. Ron, I'm not sure, but I believe this Jonathan Hayes is the grandfather of Jonathan who married Melvina Short and fought in the Civil War. He was born in 1777 and died in 1865. Is John Hayes the father of Jonathan (Civil War) and son of Jonathan (1777)? If so, can you tell me who John Hayes married? Did Jonathan Hayes marry a Bolling, he certainly settled amidst the Bollings at Flat Gap? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greetings to all" <semperfi@willapabay.org> To: <VAWISE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 4:36 AM Subject: Re: [VAWISE] Jonathan Hayes > Hi Rhonda, > > I am not sure which Jonathan Hayes it might be as there were probably many > from various families, if you find out for certain let me know as I have the > following two Johnathan Hayes grandparent ancestors from that era living in > and around wise county. 2. Greetings to all
    3. Hi Rhonda, I am not sure which Jonathan Hayes it might be as there were probably many from various families, if you find out for certain let me know as I have the following two Johnathan Hayes grandparent ancestors from that era living in and around wise county. We know little about them as far as family history or dates. We spell it both ways Hayes and Hays. The eldest of the two (the father Jonathan Hayes Sr.) would probably fit that time period.. I know nothing about him except he had a son also named Jonathan Hayes who married Melvina Short d/o Daniel Short. I believe on a Wise county marriage license it list the Senior Jonathan Hayes was a wittness when his son Jonathan married Melvina / Vina Short in Wise county. It does not say anything more about him. I do believe the Junior Johnathan Hayes was taken POW duiring the civil war, around 1861 and we believe he was then taken to Camp Douglas IL. where he died. We are egar to find any of them, family history or even the headstones. Most of my ancestors would have come out of the Flat Gap Area of Pound.
