I found this today at the FHR from the Sutherland Collections. AN EARLY PETITION - 1880's- To the Hon. H.M. Jones, Judge and To Wm.A. Ayers, Attorney for Commonwealth of Dickenson County- The undersigned Citizens of Dickenson County would most respectfully ask that the prosecution against Cornelius Vanover be dimissed in view of the fact that it is generally believed that said Vanover can not live but a few days longer. We think that this course would be eminently proper and right. J.W.Swindal , E.L. Phipps , Jasper S. Colley , Jary Caudll ? , Larkin Stanley , Henry Keel, George Dyer , Eli Vanover, J.L. I have been looking for information on a Lettie MULLINS who married Robert Jefferson FLEMING in Pike Co. KY in 1846. William MULLINS and Wm COOK attested to Lety's signature on the letter requesting the license, this letter was dated November 14, 1846. Do you have any information on Lettie, Lety or Letha MULLINS? Hi All, I guess everyone must have 'spring fever' and be outside enjoying the warm weather, since I haven't seen any post in quite some time! I thought I would throw out one of our family lines, to see if anyone is connected to this family. The Meades lived in Russell, Scott and Wise Counties, with Henry being the supposed ancestor of all the Meades in that area. I have much more info on this line, but thought the 1st four generations would be enough for any one to handle. hi, I just recently read an article that said Frank Monroe Beverly had a newspaper in the 1890's called the Dickenson County Newspaper, it lasted about one year. Does anyone know if any of these newspaper articles are still around. Also in one of the books about the Wise County schools there was an article that stated pictures and article of 10 residents appeared in the Times-Dispatch. My three grandparents were mentioned in this article. they were Henry Vanover and his wife Rhoda Long, also Margaret Elam the mother-in-law of Amos Reed, all of Dickenson County at that time. Amos Reed married Sarah Elam, the daughter of Wesley Elam and Margaret Bond, Amos was the son of Hiram and Lucy Reed. Does anyone have any information on any of the above ?? thanks a lot. Louise Vanover Vore
Hi all: I wanted to address a post from last week concerning Henry Vanover's second wife, Jane Austin, which stated that "Jane Austin's parents were Bartholomew Austin and Jane Reeves, dau. of George Reeves and Jane Burton." My records show that Bartholomew Austin was married to Anne Reeves, a daughter of Enoch Reeves and Chatta McMillan. Children of Bartholemew and Anne (Reeves) Austin were: 1) William Austin 2) Isaiah Austin 3) Jane Austin married Henry Vanover and lived on Cranberry Creek in Ashe County, NC. They had no children. Before her marriage she had two children, Henderson and James. 4) Jesse Austin 5) Andrew Austin 6) David Austin 7) Cindy Austin 8) John Austin 9) George Austin 10) Robert Austin 11) Prudence Austin 12) Jackson Austin 13) Edward Austin (source: Pioneer Recollections of Southwest Virginia by E. J. and Hetty Sutherland) I do not have an Austin link at this time but want to have good information in my database so my question for Austin researchers...Who was the wife of Bartholomew Austin? Jane Reeves d/o George Reeves and Jane Burton or Anne Reeves d/o Enoch Reeves and Chatta McMillan? Martha

Hi Phyllis, I must have missed your offer or I would have posted earlier, when you go on your trip could you do a lookup for death of Preston Casteel, in the middle to late 40's , he was killed in a mining accident, and if you find his death certificate or article concerning his death could you please please see if his parents are listed? thank you so very much tereva
Hello All I have been told of a posting in the Letcher Co Historical Book about my family, and someone sent me a copy of it. Now I have been in this family for 55 years and the information contained in the book is totally false as I know it. One G W GOINS married AMANDA HICKS, daughter of William and Sarah (MAXEY) HICKS. GW was the son of JOHNNY and SYNDA (SEXTON) GOINS of Newmans Ridge, Hancock Co, Tenn. Is there anyone out there that has any information about these people? I sure would love to hear from you. They lived and died in Lee Co, VA, Thanks Twanda
Hi Phyllis, Thank you for offering to do lookups during your trip. My ggggrandfather, James B. Brown, moved to Gladespring (then Wise Co.) around 1869. He married his second wife, Mary Dean Vance, in 1874. Family history has it that he died in Gladespring, but I haven't been able to find out where. He died on March 13, 1879. Any help you could give me with James B. Brown and Mary Dean Vance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Robin Big Island, VA
Hi Phyllis and Ganell My Gibson's are in the one past Toms Creek, up the mountain and left at the store. When you drive up and turn in at the little turn area there is a big old oak tree and they are buried under it. Beautiful can't even describe it.... Phyllis we are related on the Meade side. I will look in my paper work and post it. I will do that today and get back to you. My Gibson line lived at Toms Creek when I was growing up. Nellie E. Amburgey Gibson lived right below the school house in Toms Creek. I remember going to visit at the school with one of the neighbors (a Ball girl) from CranesNest where my Hall grand-parents lived. Clarence E. Hall and Edna Leona Greear Hall. Edna was the daughter of Robert S. Greear and Sallie Stallard. Phyllis ask when you visit if they remember my father, he was known as Junior Gibson. I took mother Mary Ann Hall Gibson and dad back a few years ago for the Toms Creek reunion held in the Flatwoods. It was Great and they got to see folks they had grown up with. I plan on coming back in June or July, I try and come at least once a year. I want to retire there in Wise County but am still trying to talk my husband into it...He's an Okie!!!!! Thank both of you for the offer of help, any and all is appreciated. Lynn
Gibson Family As Phyllis said, there are two Edwards Cem on Sandy Ridge...on is at the top of Toms Creek and is a large one; the other one is on the Lloyd Evans farm called the Calvin Edwards Cem. and wait a minute there is another---out in McClellan town. Some people call this the McClellan cem but is really the Bob Edwards cemetery. I guess the Edwards line is important here. John D. Edwards--Top Toms Creek--Edwards Cemetery--first in Wise Co. John Friel Edwards --Toms Creek Cem. son of John D. The Robert (Bob) is a brother to John Friel, the Calvin is a son. Jeremiah and Agatha Gibson Couch is said to be buried in yet another Sandy Ridge Cem--just off Fairview Road--called the McCoy-Hayes Cem. This is the Gibson that Phyllis and I would love to pinpoint parentage to...We only know she was born in TN. Hi Lynn, Jim's cousin married a Gibson from the Sandy Ridge Gibsons. While we are down there this weekend, I'll try to go by and show her your info and see if she can shed any light on your line. She is in her 70's, so would know a lot about that area. Jim also has relatives buried in the Edwards Cemetery. There is also another Edwards cemetery located on Sandy Ridge, the Calvin Edwards Cemetery (isn't that name right Ganell?). Jim and I have documented all the graves in that one, but not the one called The Edwards Cemetery. That is a larger project and we haven't had the time to do it yet. We are trying to document the headstones in cemeteries in the Sandy Ridge area, as time permits. Perhaps we can do that one in Sept. when we spend a week down there. Hello Wise County My GIBSON line has been a job. Still trying to figure it all out. I was a Gibson before marriage and my father Cecil F. Hi All, I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and hope to hear from some of you new members to the list. Don't be shy, we won't bite!<GBG> Ron, Thanks for posting these surnames to the list. I hope you find some cousins. I ask Ron to post his lines to the list, after he sent us his website address. I think we should be aware, that some people do not have access to the internet (only email), and they may hold the key to our search. I will be in Wise County this coming weekend and will be able to go to the courthouse and Wise County Historical Society for a short period of time on Fri. If there is anything I could look up for anyone, please let me know. Please let other people know about this list, if you have the opportunity. I posted an announcement on the Johnson Co. TN list and the Melungeon list, but that is all. 'til later, Phyllis Morefield [email protected] ICQ # 3285456 Listowner: [email protected] [email protected] Second Union: A Melungeon Gathering will be held July 9-12, 1998. Hi Y'all, I just had to tell you lovely people that even here in the normally cold state of Michigan, it's even a beautiful day. Hope everyone had as lovely an Easter as my family. It feels like it must be about mid - 60's here.
