    1. [VAWISE-L] Part II of the newspaper clips
    2. Louise
    3. Hello all, Here's part two! This is from a newspaper from Dickenson Co, VA in the 1890's. As was part one. Part II deals primarily with the VANOVERS. John P. VANOVER, of Freeling, this county, is very feeble. He is about 84 yrs. old and has lived on his present homestead for 40 years. John P. VANOVER, of Freeling, this county, died a few days since, at the advanced age of 84 years. Mr. VANOVER was a pioneer settler of this section, and came originally from N.C. Henry VANOVER, of Johnson Co., KY, is here on business relative to the settlement of the estate of his father, who died in the early fall. Clintwood, VA, Nov. 21* - Mrs. Cornelius VANAVER, of Osborn's Gap, this county, died on yesterday after a lingering illness. She has been afflicted with consumption for some years, and for several months past she had been confined to the sick-room. Deceased was over 60 yrs. of age and had for many years past lived in the vicinity where she died. This is all of part II! There may be more to follow!! Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore

    1. [VAWISE-L] Old Newspaper Clippings, Dickenson County, VA
    2. Louise
    3. Hello All, Found these few newspaper clippings that were collected by Doc Swindall. Thought you might find them enjoyable. A Singular Mountain Feud A Family in Cumberland Mountains are at Logger- heads. Dwale, Dickenson Co., March 9 - A singular family feud has just terminated in Cumberland mountain, happily, without bloodshed. This section is rather isolated - the mountain forming the boundary line between the States of VA & KY. The people here are off in a nook, where they are not affected by the march of civilization. They remain in something of a primitive state, while other sections are keep- ing pace with the progress of age. There are not to be met in these mountains as unique characters as were ever delineated by the versatile pens of Dickens or our own Washington Irving. Old Cornelius VANOVER, who is remembered as the oldest settler or the mountains, was always dis- tant and much reserved in his manners, and went but little into social circles. He reared a large family. Most of his children partook of his strange peculiarities, for which the family has long been noted. The boys all married, but only one of the girls embarked on the matrimonial sea, the others, either from choice or necessity remained under the paternal roof. They range in ages from 25 or 55 or thereabouts. David, the eldest son of the old man, has always lived within one-half mile of his father since his marriage. He reared two sons, who have been addicted to bad habits from their boyhood up From some cause or other there grew up a hardness to express it in the mountain vernacular between Dave's family and that of the old man, which was soon kindled into a flame. Dave and his boys armed themselves and swore vengeance against the others. The old man & his family were always afraid of Dave & his force, and usually kept under cover while the latter were a bout. But for this course, doubtless, there would have been bloodshed. On several occasions clubs and rocks were brought into play but nothing more serious than bruises had resulted from such affairs. This state of things continued for a year or perhaps longer - Dave and his force always on the aggressive side, while the others were on the defensive. At length, realizing that they could not live within the bounds of the same neighborhood (the remainder is missing.) This is part one of the clippings that we are going to send. Look for more to come. Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore

    1. [VAWISE-L] The Best Mail Reader For Genealogy
    2. Joseph
    3. I have searched and searched for a mail reader that is better for my needs than Pegasus Mail. I've tried Offline Express, Eudora Pro, Email 2000, Netscape mail, and, a number of others. All of those programs are fine...some even exceptional, however none handle the mail digests as well as Pegasus mail. Before I go on I want everyone to know that I have no interest whatsoever in Pegasus mail, besides it is a FREE program. No!, it isn't "free" on a trial basis...it is 100% FREE. You can get it at: http://www.pegasus.usa.com/ Be sure to get version 2.54 if you decide to give it a shot because the BETA version is for advanced [Pegasus] users and is a little buggy yet. Version 2.54 is rock solid... Here is why I like Pegasus so much: On top of the fact that it is FREE and that it rivals the best mail readers out there [this isn't hype], it handles the mailing list "DIGEST MODE" like no other that I've found. What happens is that when you get a "digest" and open it, it opens another window with each message listed just as if they were individual messages. You can pick the ones that you want and open them just as if they were individual messages....read, reply, etc. In other words you can get the digests as ONE message, yet still work with them like you had gotten 10, 20, 30, or even a 100 individual messages. You can COPY individual messages into "yourname" {whichever surname] folder without having to do gymnatics to save that ONE message. All I can say is that this is a phenomenal feature for people who use digest mode and find the one drawback is that they find it difficult to archive that ONE message they want to keep. If you are tired of getting your mailbox stuffed with hundreds of useless messages every day, begin using Pegasus and switch your subscription to DIGEST MODE!....all of a sudden those HUNDREDS turn into four or five. List Owners...check this one out! 3. The general area is Far Eastern Tennessee, Southwestern VA, Southern WVA, and Yancey & Mitchell Counties in NC. I am placing the surnames along with number of each here below for you to check over. If it looks like you might be interested in a particular surname...Please!...visit my page(s) which are linked in my signature file at the bottom and examine the GEDCOM that I have made available. The last time that I placed the list here WITHOUT making this point I ended up getting over 100 non-specific requests like..."Give me all you have on the "XXX" surname" or "Do you think that your John XXX might be related to XXX?" 3. I am new to this list but not to genealogy. I have been at it many years and still have many brick walls but this is my main one. I have a website called APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN FAMILIES . On this site is 17 family trees w/ many surnames in each file. We also have Melungeon research by Virginia DeMarce . This is not just my site but many folks that have joined in to share information for all to use. I hope I can share with folks on this list and hopfully find a couple blanks in my own tree to fill in. Meredith Collins married second Margaret "Polly" Holloway about 1795. I have never been able to find any info on Polly . They showed up in Russell Co. Va. about 1800 with Bradley and his sister from a first marriage ( also unknown to me)and two small male sons supposely Polly's. Archibald,James,William, a female and male were born in Russell Co. before they moved to Floyd Co. KY in 1810. Polly d. 1812 Meredith took a third wife(common law) Milly Johnson. Does anyone connect to this family? Brenda Collins Dillon

    3. Hi All, I'm looking for any descendants of George McCoy of Russell Co., VA. George McCoy, who along with his brother, Robert, moved to Southwest VA about 1789 from GA. George died about 1809/1810, Robert about 1890. George had a at least 7 children, Robert none. There was a later lawsuit in Russell Co, VA over ownership of their property, which gives an account of their relationship to a brother, James and a sister, Rachel, who remained in GA. Children of George McCoy, d. 1809/1810, were: Brumfield James Thomas George Reuben John Mary 'til later, Phyllis Morefield [email protected] ICQ # 3285456 Listowner: [email protected] [email protected] Second Union: A Melungeon Gathering will be held July 9-12, 1998. 3. Rita Sage, You mentioned Nancy Mullins that married William Stanley. They were my gggg grandparents on my fathers side and my ggg grandparents on my mothers side. I was born and raised in Pike County, Ky. and also possibly share your LOWE lineage. A son of William & Nancy, Moses, married Ellender LOWE in 1822 in Stuart, Patrick Co., Virginia. Ellender (Nellie) LOWE was the daughter of Aaron Lowe and Sarah Frazier. Moses & Ellender STANLEY migrated into Pike Co. Kentucky around the year 1845 from Franklin County, Virginia.
