    3. Newspaper unknown, Submitted by, Annette Damron Rachel & Louise Vanover Vore A DETECTIVE’S MISTAKE William J. Fleming, who turned detective a short time ago, is now in a lot of trouble. As was noticed in this correspondence a few days since, he arrested a man he thought was one John HOLLAND, who is wanted at Knoxville for murder. He had a man to come there to identify his prisoner which he did, but upon taking the man to Knoxville it turned out that he is a different man. He is Jake WHITE of West Virginia, and fills the description of HOLLAND in part only. FLEMING is out about $100 in money besides considerable time, and the man intends to sue him for damages and to charge him for kidnapping, which, under the statues of KY., where the arrest was made, is a penitentiary offense. WHITE came back with FLEMING, making him pay all his expenses. Our mail is very irregular. About half the time our papers never reach us. There must be something wrong somewhere. Can not Uncle Sam lend us a helping hand? Mrs. ROSE, widow of Rev. Elias ROSE, died yesterday of fever, after lingering a month. Her husband died two weeks ago of the same disease. Clintwood, VA, Nov 21* - Mrs. Cornelius VANAVER, of Osborn’s Gap, died on yesterday after a lingering illness. She had been afflicted with consumption for some years, and for several months past she had been confined to the sick-room. Deceased was over 60 yrs. of age and had for many years past lived in the vicinity where she died. A YOUNG HUSBAND PASSED AWAY Clintwood, VA. Sept 30* - Noah MULLINS, a young man of this county, died at Nickel’s Gap, four miles north of this place, on yesterday and was interred today in the family burying-ground. Young MULLINS had been married two years and was living near Stratton, but about two weeks ago, seeing that he could not recover from the fell destroyer of the human race--consumption--he requested to be removed to his father’s, and he died there. He leaves a wife and two children with a host of friends. (Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.) Mr. P.S. PHIPPS left here yesterday to attend a medical school at Richmond. Mr. PHIPPS is an exemplary young man and we bespeak for him success in his enterprise Enjoy! More to follow at a later time. Unless Rachel's fingers fall off..She's been the main typist!

    3. Hello Wise County Just got of the phone with the Rev.Emory COOK of Dante, Virginia. His father John COOK was the sister to my Elizabeth (Betty) COOK who married Flemming HALL. The father of these COOK'S was James (JIM) COOK and there was a book written about the Cook family by Mr. Paul W. Dishman (who is now in Heritage Hall in Wise). Does anyone have knowledge of this book? Also they are having a COOK/OSBORNE reunion in Date on Sunday at the Rev. COOK'S home. It seems to be a yearly event. Is anyone attending that is on line here in Wise County???? I just found all of this out today and am very excitied to have gotten some information on the COOK family. Also was told that James (Jim) COOK was killed during the Civil War? He was a scout and was killed near Dickenson Holler????? Let me know if any of this rings a bell. Thanks, Lynn Researching Hall, Cook, Minton, Gibson, Amburgey, Horn, Kelly, Greear, Stallard, Painter, Atkins etc.....

They soon found it impossible to procure marriage license here without permission from the girl's parents. It is thought they will probably go to Bristol or to some other point in Tennessee. The girl is about "sweet sixteen" as pretty as a picture, and is worth all the trouble she is likely to cost. Clintwood, VA. June 1, Burdine DESKINS, an aged farmer living within half a mile of this place, had the misfortune to have his arm broken and mangled in a terrible manner the other day by a large log which he was trying to roll off a piece of ground. Dr. PHIPPS who attended him, thinks amputation of the limb necessary. James K. DAMRUN, an attorney of this place , and Miss Belle SUTHERLAND, of Bucu, were quietly married the other day at the home of the bride's parents. 1. [VAWISE-L] RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT! Albert Potter of Dorton, KY., Still on Call as a Deputy Sheriff in Pike County at 90!
    2. Louise
    3. Hello all! Just thougt you all would enjoy this little tidbit that my mother found on my great-uncle Albert POTTER. Yes, the subject line is true. My great-uncle was in Ripley's Believe it or not! Pikeville man did 'sheriffin' for 71 years By. T.G. MOORE Associated Press PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Albert Potter speaks with more than 70 years of ex- perience when he says that being a po- liceman "can be a right smart headache." Potter, a retired Pike County deputy sheriff, will be 91 on Jan. 1, 1977, and is one of the oldest living law enforcement officers in the United States, according to the FBI. "They sent me some papers and said I was one of the oldest alive." Potter said recently from his home near Pikeville. Potter is still offically listed as a dep- uty sheriff, and he often gives advice to the department. He carries a badge and gun, but does not recieve a salary. His career had taken him across the hills of Eastern Kentucky hundreds of times in search of "outlaws and bad men." "I started sheriffin' in Letcher County when I was 19 years old. I joined up with some federal revenuers." Potter said. "I was pretty young then. They used to come in here about 15 or 16 men in a group and go out cutting those stills in Johnson, Floyd, Knott, Pike and Letcher counties. "When I first started I'd keep the horsed for them when they'd go on a raid, and later I helped'em bust up some stills." he added. Potter settled in Pike County when he was about 30 and has been a deputy sher- iff "ever since". Many times Potter said, the duties of a deputy sheriff involved as much mar- riage counseling as enforcing the law. "You take a woman when she takes a notion to get mad at her man for gettin' drunk, why, she'd get a warrant for him and I'd go talk to them and get them to make friends." "I had pretty good luck with that," Potter said. Making the rounds on horseback, with a ".38-special" strapped to either leg "and sometimes a Winchester" in the saddle, often to got to be "pretty dangerous work," Potter said. Once he said, "I don't remember real- ly when, I got shot in the left arm and shoulder and I would have bled to death if it hadn't been for a good man who bound me up." Potter, who has had two sons enter and retire from law enforcement, said that "if I had my days to live over again I wouldn't be an officer." "My children took after me, but I started out as a carpenter and I'd have been better off to stayed in it." However, Potter said his wife Virgie, has never complained once during nearly 70 years of marriage. Potter and his wife will celebrate their 70th anniversary on Dec. 26. "She always told me she didn't want me to give it up; she wanted me to be an officer." said Potter. "I told her I guessed she was trying to get me killed, but I was only joking." Well, that's all that the article had to say. I hope you all have enjoyed reading it as much as I have. Rachel Vore dau. of Louise Vore gdau of Frances Baker and Monroe Vanover

    3. News from Dickenson County, Va.,in 1890's. name of Newspaper unknown. CONTAGIOUS FEVER CAUSES NEGLECT TO THE SICK Dwale,VA. - Dickenson Co.,VA., Sept. 80-- Two women Mrs. Hibbits and her sister, Mrs. Hill, of the fever stricken section of the Ridge, died yesterday. It is believed by the people of the surrounding county to be contagious, and as a result nobody will go in to wait up on the sick, and they are dying partly for want of attention. These people are in wretched condition and the justices are talking of establishing a tempory hospital for their relief. The first snow of the season fell here yesterday, but there was only enough to serve as a gentle reminder. Mrs. Frances Vanover , near this place , is said to be in critical condition and is not expected to live. She recently gave birth to a child and her illness dates from that time. A new post office, known as Dwale, has recently been established three miles east of this place with Frank M. Beverly, postmaster, This will be a great convenience to the peole of that place.

    3. NEWS FROM DICKENSON COUNTY, VA IN 1890S, name of newspaper unknown. FAR SOUTH WEST - VERY MUCH MARRIED Dwale, Dickenson Co., VA - Nov. 18 - Your correspondent learns that George Isaccs , aged 71 years, who, it is charged , has seven living wives in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio, eloped from Beaver Floyd County, Kentucky, Tuesday, with a pretty widow. Soon after arriving at that place , it is said, he learned that the officials were looking after him, and he skipped, taking the woman with him. He married Mrs. Liza Polly, a widow of Sergent, Letcher County, and after living with her three months, he deserted her, going to Beaver, where he made his seventh matrimonial venture. Isaacs is hale and hearty, and can walk forty of fifty miles a day over rough mountain roads. Clintwood, Va.., Oct. 21 - Last night there were 16 gallons of brandy stolen from Owen's distillery about two miles below town. The "_____ over joyful" was left at the distillery in a barrel, and as there was no enclosure around it there was nothing to prevent it from being stolen. There is some talk of the race for the clerkship of this county, but it is not definitely know who will be the candidate but looks at present as if Ira VANOVER and Joshua Counts are to be. Mr. P. S. Phipps left here yesterday to attend a medical school at Richmond. Mr. Phipps is an exemplary young man and we bespeak for his success in his enterprise.
