    2. Louise
    3. Dickenson County News 1890s-1900s- Newspaper Unknown submitted by : Annette Damron, Rachel Vore and Louise Vanover Vore There is a crack in one of the walls of our court-house; and it being a brick structure, that gives some alarm. The brick was an inferior quality and the building was badly constructed. There is some talk of the race for the clerkship of this county, but it is not definitely known who will be the candidate but it looks at present as if Ira VANOVER and Joshua COUNTS are to be. John C. SMITH’s school at this place is progressing finely but is not so well attended as it should be. Clintwood, VA., Sept. 2 - There is a movement on foot to establish a college at this place. The citizens seem to be subscribing liberally to the building funds. Professor Milton KEMINEM of KY, is to be the president of the college if the movement proves a success, and he proposes to subscribe a large amount himself. Miss Jane BROWNING near this place is very sick. Clintwood, VA, Aug. 2 - Your correspondent learns that John E. BEVERLY, of Beppo, this county, was seriously, if not fatally, beaten by one Tom HAWKINS a day or two since. The particulars of the affair are about these; HAWKINS met young BEVERLY at a burial, and accused him of standing by with an open knife in his hand ready to cut him in a certain difficulty, which he (HAWKINS) had had with someone a few days before this time. BEVERLY told HAWKINS that he had no knife, and that he wanted no trouble with him at that time and place, and turned to walk away, when HAWKINS saized a rock and struck BEVERLY a violent blow behind the ear, felling him to the ground in an insensible condition. Not satisfied with this, HAWKINS sprang upon his victim with all the fury of a tiger, and having on a big, heavy pair of stoga boots, with the heels filled with tacks, he kicked and stamped BEVERLY till he was apparently satisfied, leaving him covered with blood and in a pitiful condition. BEVERLY seemed to have no friends by, while his assailant had quite a number. HAWKINS at last account was still at large, but the authorities were making efforts to arrest him. Mrs. Robert STANLEY, of Beppo, died a day or two since, after a lingering illness. She was not more than 20 years old. She leaves a husband and two small children. The school-houses and furniture of this section of the county are being badly abused by the unruly boys. The doors of the buildings have been broken down in several instances, and the furniture damaged. Many of the boys, who are addicted to the pernicious habit of gambling, enter the houses by night for the purpose of have a game at cards, while in the other cases it is just downright mischief that promotes the “vandalism”. John P. VANOVER, of Freeling, this county, is very feeble. He is about 84 yrs. old and has lived on his present homestead for 40 years.

    1. [VAWISE-L] More Dickenson County Newpaper Articles, 1890's (or so)
    2. Louise
    3. Hello All, Here's another installment of Dickenson County, Va., articles from an unknown Dickenson County Newspaper. We believe that Frank M. Beverly was the main correspondent. Hope you all enjoy! These are submitted by: Annette Dameron, Louise (Vanover) and Rachel Vore. Mr. D. P. VALLEY and his wife have just arrived here from Michigan on a visit to _____ Jones, the father of Mrs. VALLEY. Clintwood, VA., Oct 21* - Last night there were about 16 gallons of brandy stolen from OWEN’s distillery about two miles below town. The “___ over joyful” was left at the distillery in a barrel, and as there was no enclosure around it, there was nothing to prevent it from , being stolen. Samuel STANLY, a farmer who lives near here, has sold off his effects and is going to Illinois, where he intends to make his future home. Clintwood, VA - Wm. FLEMING, a farmer near this place, is on the sick list having a bad case of fever. His recovery was pronounced uncertain by his physicians a few days ago, but at this writing they think his recovery is assured. Geo. W. ROBINSON, an old citizen of this county, is very low. He is feeble being very old, and has a cancer in his eye. He had been confined to his bed for several weeks and will not survive much longer. MR. VANOVER SHOOTS HIMSELF IN DICKENSON Suicide of a Young man Who Became Despondent - Liburn Kelly Hurt With A Axe ______________________________________________ FREELING , VA. - April 12 - Special - Weddington Vanover, age 20, son of James Vanover shot himself in the head with a pistol, from which death result in a few hours. No cause is assigned to the rash act. About a week before the suicide accident occurred he told some of his associates that he was going to die , and gave directions as to the manner of his burial, but it seems little attention was paid to this at this time. He was sitting at the bedside when the awful hour came, and drawing a pistol, he placed the muzzle against his head, just above his right eye, and fired, the ball passing thorough his brain. Hope you all enjoy. More to come at a later time! Rachel and Louise (Vanover) Vore

    1. [VAWISE-L] RE: Gilleys
    2. Previously posted history of James Shaler Gilley Family and Offspring, and efforts towards location of Clarice Pearl Gilley - second wife, and son James by this second marriage. The Death Cert. of Clarice Pearl Gilley was received and info from that was posted. Contact with Phyllis Bays, who was the informant of the death of Clarice happened to live at the same address in Louisville, Ky - Jefferson County. I took a chance and wrote, with request to forward if necessary. Received a very nice reply from Phyllis, which I will paraphrase for brevity purposes (Until we read the death certificate of James Shaler, we were unaware - at least I was - that he had remarried following death of first wife - Virginia Belle Lyburn in 1909. Only recently learned of the son-James from my brother ): Clarice Pearl Gilley was Phyllis Bay's mother, who had been widowed when Phyllis was approx. 5 yrs. old. Her brother - James Shaler, Jr. (the James we knew nothing about) suffered a fall about the time James Shaler Sr. was dying - died in 1940 when Clarice was 27 yrs. old. He was 60. As a result of the fall, James, Jr., is handicapped mentally and physically - now convalesing at the Golden Years Rest Home in Jenkins, Ky. Clarice suffered stroke, , which prevented her usual activities, and resided with Phyllis for 19 yrs, and died in Louisville, Ky in 1973. She is buried at the Blair Cem. in Whitesburg, Ky, beside James Shaler, Sr's grave. A plot is set aside for James Shaler Jr. at the same site. Clarice's parents - see prior notices- died when she was 12 yrs. old, and was an only child. Phyllis, like some of us from James Langley Gilley's side of the family - he being the son of James Shaler Sr., from the first marriage, did not know of the existence of our side of the Gilley family, until I wrote to her making certain inquiries. We did not know of Phyllis at all. I wrote to the Letcher County Historical/Genealogical Society in Whitesburg, KY, to inquire as to what is required to tap into information about our family, but have yet to hear anything. Learned of some articles appearing in the Mountain Eagle Newspaper, Circa: 1937-1944 covering Letcher County activities and await the receipt of three which have to do with my Father's exploits while playing baseball in the Ky-River League. Another has the Obit on James Shaler Gilley, Sr. The last is on one - Edgar Gilley - await to see what that is, as may not be of same family. Information on Virginia Belle Lyburn remains a mystery. We assume she is buried in Whitesburg, Ky too. Perhaps James Shaler, Jr. is there as well. However, we know that James Shaler Gilley's people and immediate off-spring lived in Stonega-Appalachia, Va. James Shaler's father - Tayler Gilley (my g/g/father) was from Lee Co, Va. Unless and until the Historical Societies loosen up for us, we are sorely hampered in learning more about Tayler and Virgnia Belle. Vital Statistics in Richmond can not assist because of the period pre-dating their accummulation of data. Now requires an attempt via the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Va. who have records of birth and death records prior to 1896, and marriage records prior to 1936. Unfortunately, I live in Altamonte Springs, Fl., and the Va. State Library will not lend their microfilm to out-of-state Libraries for me to view and copy. With the exception of the years of 1986 to 1912, the VirginiaDiv. of Vital Records has records of Birth, deaths and marriages since 1853. No records prior to that date, and there was no law for the registration of births and deaths between 1896 and June 14, 1912. Any genealogical research must be done in the Archives Division of at the Va. State Library Copies of records on file with the Va. Div of Vital Records can be obtained upon application and payment of a fee of $8.00 per copy. In the Va. Div of Vital Records, death, marriage, and divorce data become public information fifty (50) years from the date of the event, and birth records become public information after a hundred (100) years from the date of birth. Didn't mean to be so long, but perhaps someone will appreciate what one must endure in tracing loose ends, and what is bureaucratically required on information that is public. Requires either personal search or the hire of someone to do it for you. Once we hear further, will advise. Am copying this to the KYROOTS and GILLEY-L Roots people, as well. Peace, Tim :-}}} (Altamonte Springs, Fl. )

    1. [VAWISE-L] "Hick" Baker
    2. Louise
    3. Hello all, The following article comes from a Dickenson County Newspaper, 1890's. It is about Cornelius "Hick" Baker. Far up in the mountain heights we come to Baker’s Cave, so named from the fact that an old man by the name of Baker seems to have discovered it, and from signs he saw there concluding that treasures were hidden there. He dug holes in the cave; but never found the visionary treasure he sought. There is a maple tree standing near the entrance to the cave, in the smooth bark of which he carved the initials of his name, “H. B.” (Hick Baker). These letters, though plainly visible now, will ere many years pass, become distorted by the growth of the tree, with its effects upon the bark, till they cannot be read. I may add that the old man lived out his allotted three score and ten years, when the inevitable happened, and he went to his reward. The entrance to Baker’s cave is an opening through some rocks, and is circular in form, about three feet in diameter. Once through the opening you are in a spacious room perhaps sixty feet in length by thirty feet in width. It is solid rock over head and on all sides, though rather irregular as for stone. It is quite......... We are looking for family of Socia Hammon(ds). Any help that you can provide would be appriciated. Thanks in advance, Louise Vanover Vore
