Dear Wilma, I was raaised in Wise County, VA. and have heard lots of talk concerning Ferrell Strange, in fact he was reared by my great great grandmother and her second husband, Riley Hash, who was also Ferrell's uncle. Now Ferrrell's father old Billy Strange was a cabinetmaker and I have a daybed he made that is beautiful. Old Bille Strange first married a Hash a sister of Riley Hash. After her death I believe he married a Miller. Hi Nancy, Thanks for the reply but Iam not the one looking for the Strange family. I responded to a request from someone who was looking someone by the surname of Strange. I found one in my Knott county Ky census book and posted it to her. The person I am trying to find is Kate Gibson born in Va, 1822. I don't know what county ?? She had a son John Ramy born 1842 in Va, a son William Gibson, born 1848-9 Va. Samuel Gibson born 1852-3 Va, Ham or Hamilton Gibson born ? in Va She and her sons came to Ky sometime in the 1860's . After comeing to Ky she had a daughter Elvira born 1860-5. Now what is puzzeling me is all the way up to the 1900 knott county census Kate and her family all except John Ramy-Ramey, changed their last name from Gibson to Collins. Kate and some of her children are burried in Knott county on Ball creek, in the Ramey cemetary under the name of Collins. Some puzzle isen't it!!!. If you have any info on any of these people please let me know. Thanks again for responding to me. Relative to further researching the Gilley/Gilly descendancy, in hopes of pulling in the final pieces of the puzzle as they apply to certain individuals about whom we have yet to uncover, whether it be birth, marriage and/or death records in the states of VA, KY, or WVA.. There were numerous Francis Gilleys who were scattered in several areas of Virginia, especially in Henry Co, and Patrick County, Va.: 1. Francis Gilley, Sr., b. cir 1730 England, came to Henry Co. Va. and died in 1791. Wife: Elizabeth ______? d. 1786. 2. iii - Francis Gilley, Jr. b. cir 1759. Son of Francis Gilley, Sr. 3. iii - Francis "Frank" Gilley, b. cir 1786, Son of Richard Gilley. 4. iii - Francis Gilley, b. abt 1793, Son of Francis Gilley, Jr. It would appear that none of the above "Francis" #2 thru #4 are the descendant from Francis Gilley, Sr., b. Cir. 1730 we are looking for but rather Francis Gilley, b. abt 1779 in Buckingham Co., Va., m. Orra "Orey" unknown, 1805 and died in Lee County, VA., 1858. Francis died 03-20-1848 in Lee Co. Va. Francis Gilley, b. 1779, parented 10 children, one of whom was Joseph Gilley, b. abt 1820 in Lee Co., Va. Wife: Delia "Lilly" Elkins, b. ca. 1825. She was daughter of Catherine . b. 1795. Alfred Taylor Gilley, b. 1840, was one of 9 children by Joseph and Delia Gilley, in Lee Co. Va. He married Mary E. "Polly" Bolling/Bowling, 06-06-1859 in Letcher Co., Ky. Some records show the wife was Mary Elizabeth Maggard. Alfred Taylor and Mary Ann parented 7 children, the 7th being James Shaler Gilley,b. 01-30-1880, Eolia, Letcher Co., Ky. d. 12-23-1940, McRoberts, Ky. First wife: Va. Belle Wilburn (or Lyburn), m. 1899 in Wva. She died 02-09-1909, where unknown. 2nd Wife: Clarice Pearl Banks, m. 06-19-1937 Whitesburg, Ky. Children from 1st marriage: Lenore - 07-18-1903, Stonega, Wise Co., Va. James Langley - 12-18-1906, Richlands, Tazewell Co. Ky. Edward - 1907 or 1908. Unknown where born or when died. Died in infancy. Children by 2nd marriage: James Shaler, Jr. - 07-24-1938, Jenkins, Letcher Co., Ky. (Still living) Burial: James Shaler Gilley, Sr., and Clarice Pearl Banks are buried at Dianah Blair Cemetery in Whitesburg, Ky. Lenore Gilley married/divorced from Eugene Luther Williams of Davy, Wva., 1920, She remarried to J. B. Byrd. She died in Norfolk, Va., 1957. James Langley Gilley, d. 1979, m. Susan Frances Bragg Gilley, 1928, d. 1991. Both buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Bluewell, Wva. Issues to resolve: 1. Correct name of Alfred Taylor Gilley's Wife - Mary Ann "Polly"Bolling/Bowling, or Mary Elizabeth Maggard. The latter name is unknown, as well as where she was born, or died. Nothing on her parents. As for Polly Bolling, that is the name shown as the mother of James Shaler Gilley on his Death Certificate. The marriage bond record shows Mary Ann Gilley, as the wife of Alfred Taylor Gilley. 2. Death Certificate of James Shaler Gilley shows date of Birth as 01-30-1880. Some lineage records show him merely as - James, b. 12-02-1878. Census records for Letcher Co., Ky., for 1880 show - James, 1 yr of age. This would tend to support the 1880 birth date as being the correct date. 3. Virginia Belle Wilburn (or Lyburn) as the 1st wife of James Shaler Gilley, wed 1899, in Wva. , according to Obituary in Mt. Eagle Newspaper. So far, nothing as to birth, marriage or death record on her in Va., KY, or WVA. Death Cert. of James Langley Gilley shows his mother as Va. Belle Lyburn (not Wilburn), and father as TAYLER Gilley. 4. Obituary suggested that James Shaler and Va. Belle Wilburn parented two daughters. There is no evidence as to a second daughter, but rather Edward, who died in infancy. James Edward Gilley, son of James Langley Gilley, still living, was named after Edward. Need birth and death records on Edward. 5. Mary Ann "Polly" Bowling - we have reviewed the descendancy lists on Benjamin and Jeremiah Bolling/Bowling. There are many Mary "Polly" either as Gilleys by birth, or by marriage. Some are Bollings/Bowlings, but married other men than Alfred Taylor Gilley. She can not be located. There are two isolated. One born in 1838, but no evidence she ever married. The other b. 1805, but this date puts her as to old to have married Alfred Taylor, b. 1841, in 1859. The closeness in her birth date of 1838 and his of 1841, makes them likely to be the marriage we are looking for. BUT WE CAN"T FIND HER! She was supposed to be from Letcher Co.Ky., and not from Lee Co., or Henry Co., Va. Can any of you provide any documentation, and other evidence to enable us to resolve the issues listed? Thanks to one and all for your assistance. Peace, Tim:-}}}

CLINTWOOD BAPTISTS WANT A CHURCH Rev. Mr. MUSIC of Russell County, preached here yesterday and day before (Sat. & Sun.) to a very appreciative audience. He is of the Missionary Baptist persuasion and has quite a followin in this place. An effort is being made to raise funds to erect a church house here by this organization, and some have contributed quite liberally to the cause. DEED OF CONVEYANCE A deed has just been put on record in the Clerks office conveying large realty on McClure Creek to Patrick HAGAN, of Scott County. This grantor is one Mr. Lovel STANELY, of this county. SUCCESS TO THE NORTON HERALD Clintwood, VA., May 21* - James F. VICARS, formerly of this place, has started a new weekly paper at Norton called the Norton HERALD. It is to assume an independent-attitude as regards politics. DOINGS IN DICKENSON Clintwood, VA., June 20* - Dickenson County Court is in session this week. Judge George L. COUNTS presiding. Jasper SUTHERLAND, a prominent citizen of Ervington, had been tried in one case for felony and is now being tried in a second. He was found guilty in the first case and fined. Peter NEWBERRY, of Tarpon, this county, had a fine horse killed in his field by lightning the other day. Among representative Democrats of this section James W. MARSHALL seems to be their first choice for Congress. Judge AYERS, of Lebanon, says the sentiment in Russell Co. is strongly in his favor, and further that Cyclone Jim can be elected without any doubt. CONTABLE COLLEYS ACCIDENT Clintwood, VA., March 8* - A sad accident occurred here on yesterday. Sumter COLLEY, constable of this place, accidently shot himself while handling a gun, the ball taking effect in his head. The point of its entrance was just below the right cheek-bone and it ranged upward, lodging in the back portion of the head. Your correspondent was informed that the blood has been flowing from his ears, mouth, and nose. It is thought to be a fatal wound. Mr. COLLEY had been out hunting, and upon his return was handling his gun carelessly when it fired, with the above stated results. Many persons here are entirely too careless with their guns. SAD AFFLICTION Rev. Cale HAYNES, who lives on the Pound River a short distance from this village, lost two of his children the latter part of the past week. The whole family has been down with fever. The first to die was a boy of some 7 or 8 yrs. old, and before the burial rites were said over his remains --a young woman 16 or 17 yrs. of age-- passed away. The others seem to be slowly convalescing. Gordon C. CLINE, of Wyoming Co., W.VA, is here on business. DICKENSONS DELEGATION OF FOUR Clintwood, VA., May 10* - The Democrats of this county held a mass-meeting on yesterday to appoint delegates to the State Convention at Richmond. The meeting was presided over by Hon. Richard L. COUNTS. The following persons were appointed as delegates from the county: F. M. BEVERLY, John WILLIS, E. T. SUTHERLAND, and Thomas K. COLLEY--this county being entitled to four. The sentiment of the meeting seemed to be divided as between HILL & CLEVELAND, but after some wrangling the delegates were instructed to favor CLEVELAND as first choice. KILLED BY AN OVERDOSE OF WORM-OIL Clintwood, VA., Mar. 31* - Ira YATES, a young man, died from the effects of an overdose of worm-oil at about half-past 3 oclock last night. He was feeling somewhat indisposed and asked his father to procure some of the oil for him, which he did; and instead of measuring the dose he drank it from the vial from which held it...Drs. PHIPPS & JONES were called to attend him.... Killed by an Overdose of Worm-oil -continued it was found that he was poisoned, but they could do nothing to afford him any relief. He was sturdy, honest and industrious young man, whom everybody liked. [*Correspndence of the Richmond Dispatch] A GAMBLING DIFFICULTY Clintwood, VA., Feb 23 - Isaac CANTELL & Hank BRYANT two young men got into a difficulty over a game of cards and the former tried to shoot the latter, but was prevented. CANTELL was arrested and required to give bond for his appearance before the grand jury. FOOT CUT OFF One of Harvey KELLYs sons had the misfortune to cut his foot off yesterday while chopping on a log. By some means his foot slipped as he was standing on the log, and the axe struck it with a heavy blow, severing it. The boy is almost grown, and has been an excellent farm hand on his fathers farm. AN ELOPEMENT Osborne FARMER and William STONES daughter eloped from her fathers the other night, the old man being adverse to the match. They soon found it impossible to procure marriage license here without permission from the girls parents. It is thought they will probably go to Bristol or to some other point in Tennessee. The girl is about sweet sixteen, as pretty as a picture, and is worth all the trouble she is likely to cost. Clintwood, VA., June 1 - Burdine DESKINS, an aged farmer living within half a mile of this place, had the misfortune to have his arm broken and mangled the other day by a large dog which he was trying to roll off a piece of ground. Dr. PHIPPS, who attended him, thinks amputation of the limb necessary. Clintwood, VA., Feb 8* Annette Damron, Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore
Perry County, Kentucky. On the 23rd of August, 1839, before Ambrose Amburgey, Justice of the Peace, appeared Nancy Mullins, resident of said County, aged 65 years, made oath: That she was married to said John Mullins in Halifax county, Virginia on the 8th of June 1792. That her husband, John Mullins, died on the 25th of February 1838. She further declares she knows of no record of her marriage except the family record, registered in her family prayer book, which record, she thinks, was written by William Buckner about 40 years since and written under the direction of her deceased husband, John Mullins, which prayer book and register has been in the declarants service ever since the registering was made. Ambrose Amburgey, Justice of the Peace, before whom the above affidavit was made, ????davit, that he is well acquainted with Nancy Mullins, and that she is a woman of good moral character, of truth and veracity. That he died on the 25th of February 1838, and that his mother has since remained a widow. He further states that he has this day, been shown his fathers and mothers prayer book, and they have recorded the date of the marriage of his father and mother, and the age of the children (the oldest ones). The deponent does not know whose handwriting the record is in, but knows the record has been in said prayer book ever since his earliest recollection, and said prayer book has been in his mothers possession ever since the death of his father. The deponent has, this day, taken the leaf containing, said family record out of the prayer book and makes it part of is deposition. Floyd County, Kentucky. Dear Louise, I am looking for a newspaper article relating to the shooting death of ny ggggrandfather Galen Marion Roberts in Wise Co. Jan 1, 1891. I believe the incident was known as the "Battle of Critical Fork." It continued as a feud for between several familes for a while longer. I don't know if such an article exists, and if so, where to look, but you seem to have the right time frame and geographical area so I thought I'd ask you. Thanks a lot, Kim Morgan [email protected]
I found this article at my local LDS Center in the Sutherland Collections PART # 1 John Mullens, old Revolutionary War soldier, 60 years of age, states that he enlisted in the service of the United States in 1779 for three years. That he enlisted under the command of Captain Henry Conway who was a Captain under the command of Col. Ball, who commanded the First Virginia Regiment. That he was at the taking of Stony Point and continued in the service of the United States and was in the battle of the Siege of Charleston, where he was taken prisoner by the British Officer Mounteen, was taken to England as a prisoner and kept there till peace was made. That he never had it in his power to return to America for 10 or 11 years, but after he returned, he received an honorable discharge. He put his discharge, his certificate for bounty but he, in a short while, became insolvent and apparently deranged so that I have never received one dollar for all my services. Said Mullins further states that he is poor and in indigent circumstances and needs the assistance of his county for his support, and therefore he prays to be placed on the pension list. Sworn to in open Court of the said County on May 18th, 1818. His John X. Mullins mark John Kelly made oath: That he lives neighbor to John Mullins, the person who made the above application. That he is a poor man and needs the assistance of his county. His John X. Kelly mark Floyd County, Kentucky. On Monday 26th of May 1825, John Mullins appeared in Court and made declaration on oath: That he is 65 years of age and a resident of said county. He made affidavit to his services, similar as above and stated that after he returned from his imprisonment, he received and honorable discharge from Captain Conway, the Captain under whom he served. He also received a certificate for Bounty Land and his wages. That he placed them into the hands of Richard Wm. (?) as above stated and that after he, William Wan (?), became deranged and insolvent, he has never gotten his discharge and has not since seen it. He made a list of his property and stated that he had not, by sale, gift or otherwise, disposed of his property so that it would bring him within provision of receiving a pension. He further states that his family consists of his wife, aged about 50 years, named Nancy, and three children, named John aged 15 years, Betsy aged 11 years, and Joshua aged 8 years. His wife is very sickly and infirm and his family is not able to contribute any to his support, worth naming. His occupation is that of a farmer, buy he is too old to pursue it. He lives upon a small piece of rented ground and it is with much difficulty that he gets it cultivated to make bread for his family. That he made his original declaration, but has not received it. He refers, for further information, to his former declaration, on file in the War Department. Joshua Mullins aged about 63, states that he is well acquainted with the present applicant, John Mullins, and that he is a brother to the old solider. That his brother, said John Mullins enlisted and served as he stated. That he has frequently heard him tell of his experiences in the service and has heard men who were taken prisoner with the said John Mullins, tell of John Mullins being with them. That he was taken prisoner to England with them and kept there until Peace was made. That he placed his honorable discharge and papers, as stated, into the hands of Richard Wan (?) and that he thinks his brother John Mullins did not see again, because Richard Wan (?) was immediately broken up and became insolvent. Floyd County, Kentucky. Silas P. Wooten, old Revolutionary War solider, states on oath, before James W. Brown Justice of the Peace, that he is well acquainted with John Mullins, old Revolutionary War soldier. That he knew him in the Revolutionary War, for 14 or 15 months, as an enlisted soldier. And then he was departed from that part of the army in which this deponent served. He understood afterward that he was taken prisoner by the British, at the Siege of Charleston, South Carolina. Letcher County, Kentucky. On this, 6th of May 1841, before Justice of the Peace in said county, appeared Nancy Mullins, resident of Letcher County, aged 73 years, who being first sworn, made oath: That she is the widow of John Mullins, who was a private in the Revolutionary War, and on account of the Revolutionary services of her late husband, John Mullins, she was enrolled on the pension rolls of the Kentucky agency. Nancy (her X mark) Mullins John Mullins of Floyd County, was inscribed on the roll of Kentucky, to commence 26th of May, 1823. Certificate of the pension was issued 10th of September 1823, and sent to Robert Walker, Esq., Prestonburg, Kentucky. On a separate slip was recorded: John Mullins, died 25th of February, 1838. There is a total of 5 microfilms of the Sutherland Collections. Also the James Taylor Adams Collection. Plus there is a wonderful book called Pioneer Recollections by E.J. Sutherland & Hetty Sutherland. The Sutherlands have done a terrific job of keeping that area's history alive. I will probably be losing my typist & helper (RACHEL) since she starts her first teaching job in two weeks. Brag , Brag. Rachel and Louise Vanover Annette Damron
Hello, The HALL's I am researching: Franky Jane HALL who married Alexander MULLINS on August 29, 1889. I have a birth record for Franky from the LDS, October 30, 1874 in Floyd KY which states that she is the daughter of Louis Hall and Lidia Hall. I have come across two Franky Jane Hall's. I would like to know more about both of them! I am also interested in Arlie HALL, born about 1912 to Cardelia HALL and Robert Lee STRANGE. I have a James BELCHER married to my Aunt Jean STRANGE, b 2/3/1939 d 7/08/97. I have no other information on James. I have some information on a Sophrona DOTSON, born in Wise County VA, married to Lowery A STRANGE 3/29/1883. Do we have any matches? I think that Enoch's father was Isaac "Ike" MOORE b abt 1789. I have heard that the family lived in KY for a time also that Enoch had a brother Ananias. Rita
