I am also very interested in the Wise Co. census. I have not seen any on the net. Tammy

I am searching for any trace of my great great grandmother Kate Gibson or Collins??? don't know if either one of these are her maiden names. I have a wonderful book published in the eighties, I think, by Hettie Sutherland. It is called "Pioneer Recollections". Evidently , in the early part of the century, Her husband conducted interviews with the old-timers and published them in a local paper. It has wonderful interviews with swome reaching back to the Revolutionary War. If you have a chance, get it. It gave me wonderful insight on this area and some clues for more digging. My Dickenson County ancestors were Reedy, McFall(s), Honeycut, Franks. Happy hunting. DICKENSON COUNTY NEWSPAPER 1890-1900 submitted by: Annette Damron Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore Clintwood, VA., Feb 8* GIBSON of Donkey, was passing through the Gap and a man came out of the woods and attempted to hold him up and rob him; but GIBSON drew a pistol and fired at the would be robber, and it is supposed wounded him. It is now thought that the man was WRIGHT. WORK OF INCENDIARIES Killed in a Political row Across the Line. Dwale, Dickenson, Co., Oct 18 - Intelligence has just been recieved here to the effect that incendiaries have been getting in their demon-like work in the vicinity of Sergent, a few miles from here. The barn and out-buildings of Hon. Nathaniel HALL were burned last night. Loss about $2,000, no insurance. There is a clue, and several arrests will follow. Also the barn of David HALL near there was burned last night. Damages heavy; no insurance. A report has just reached here from Harlan Co., KY, to the effect that John M. MIDDLETON, a proserous young married man, was killed there a day or two since in a political row. No particulars have been recieved as to the affair; but relatives of MIDDLETON left Letcher Co. near here, for that place. It is said the election in that county will be the warmiest for years. FROM THE VIRGINIA MOUNTAIN News from Dickenson County - Bloodshed and Love. Dwale, Dickenson, Co., VA., March 18. - your correspondent lately had the privilege of looking through some papers of an old man, who has long since passed to that bourn whence no voyager returns. Some of these documents were unique, and bore dates ranging from 1830 to 1860. One instrument found among them reads as follows: For value recd., against the first day of March next, I will pay RATLIFF & CECIL thirteen dollars & 15 cents. This 16th Oct. 1832. JOHN FLEMON The following is a copy of an order granted by Floyd County Court, but whether it was the Floyd Co. of VA, or some other State rejoicing in a county of like name, there is nothing about the order to show: Floyd County Court, June term 1835: John FLEMING is appointed Surveyor of the road from the Dry Branch to the Picture of the Turtle. In the place of Frederick GLAMBAUGH, removed. And it is ordered that he call on all the hands on Beaver above where Samuel HARRIS formerly lived, and down as low as where William ISAACs to post. Nancy, Thank you so much for the additional information! I certainly would love to purchase a piece of furniture by Old Bill[ey] Strange, my great great grandfather! Any ideas where I might call? My grandfather Robert Lee Strange (4/17/1878-9/03/1962 Letcher County) is the son of Firal Strange and Sarah Perry. Rhonda Robertson has been sooooooo wonderful to also help me out with these genealogical findings. (Thank you Rhonda!) And now I have more questions (each answer seems to raise many more questions!): I have so far: Firal Strange married Sarah Perry in Wise County, 11/10/1887. Firal Strange was the son of William Ferrell Strange and Martha Jane Hash. Martha Jane Hash was the _daughter_ of Riley Hash. William Ferrell Strange was also called Old Bill[ey] Strange. Your note indicates that Martha Jane Hash was the _sister_ of Riley Hash. Do you know where I could get a copy of your source? I'm so confused! Thank you for being patient and for all of your help.
