    3. Nancy, The main item I am looking for would be a marriage license for Mary Jane Hicks to either a Harvey or an Austin, late 1890's, early 1900's. I would also be interested in a murder that occured in Russell Co., VA around 1906/07 involving a Frank Harvey and Clarence Cooper. Also, there should be court records on the adoption of my grandfather's three half-sisters, Julie Lillian Sturgill, Margaret Sturgill and Frances Sturgill, all children of Mary Jane Hicks and King Solomon Sturgill, Sr. This should have around 1922/23. Thanks for asking, Robin Clay Oliver

    3. Clintwood, VA., Mar. 31* - Ira YATES, a young man, died from the effects of an overdose of worm-oil at about half-past 3 o’clock last night. He was feeling somewhat indisposed and asked his father to procure some of the oil for him, which he did; and instead of measuring the dose he drank it from the vial from which held it...Drs. PHIPPS & JONES were called to attend him.... Killed by an Overdose of Worm-oil -continued it was found that he was poisoned, but they could do nothing to afford him any relief. He was sturdy, honest and industrious young man, whom everybody liked. [*Correspndence of the Richmond Dispatch] A GAMBLING DIFFICULTY Clintwood, VA., Feb 23 - Isaac CANTELL & Hank BRYANT two young men got into a difficulty over a game of cards and the former tried to shoot the latter, but was prevented. CANTELL was arrested and required to give bond for his appearance before the grand jury. FOOT CUT OFF One of Harvey KELLY’s sons had the misfortune to cut his foot off yesterday while chopping on a log. By some means his foot slipped as he was standing on the log, and the axe struck it with a heavy blow, severing it. The boy is almost grown, and has been an excellent farm hand on his father’s farm. Osborne FARMER and William STONES daughter eloped from her father’s the other night, the “old man” being adverse to the match. They soon found it impossible to procure marriage license here without permission from the girl’s parents. It is thought they will probably go to Bristol or to some other point in Tennessee. The girl is about “sweet sixteen”, as pretty as a picture, and is worth all the trouble she is likely to cost. Clintwood, VA., June 1 - Burdine DESKINS, an aged farmer living within half a mile of this place, had the misfortune to have his arm broken and mangled the other day by a large dog which he was trying to roll off a piece of ground. Dr. PHIPPS, who attended him, thinks amputation of the limb necessary. Clintwood, VA., Feb 8* GIBSON of Donkey, was passing through the Gap and a man came out of the woods and attempted to hold him up and rob him; but GIBSON drew a pistol and fired at the would be robber, and it is supposed wounded him. It is now thought that the man was WRIGHT. WORK OF INCENDIARIES Killed in a Political row Across the Line. Dwale, Dickenson, Co., Oct 18 - Intelligence has just been recieved here to the effect that incendiaries have been getting in their demon-like work in the vicinity of Sergent, a few miles from here. The barn and out-buildings of Hon. Nathaniel HALL were burned last night. Loss about $2,000, no insurance. There is a clue, and several arrests will follow. Also the barn of David HALL near there was burned last night. Damages heavy; no insurance. These articles have been compiled by Annette Dameron, Rachel Vore, Louise Vanover Vore, and Robert Beverly. Robert Beverly also has them on his web page at; http://members.xoom.com/rtb/DCN.htm Enjoy!!

    3. Since this is a holiday, we thought we would post a few more of the Dickenson Co. Past News Articles from newpaper, unknown. A deed has just been put on record in the Clerk’s office conveying large realty on McClure Creek to Patrick HAGAN, of Scott County. This grantor is one Mr. Lovel STANELY, of this county. SUCCESS TO THE NORTON HERALD Clintwood, VA., May 21* - James F. VICARS, formerly of this place, has started a new weekly paper at Norton called the Norton HERALD. It is to assume an independent-attitude as regards politics. DOINGS IN DICKENSON Clintwood, VA., June 20* - Dickenson County Court is in session this week. Judge George L. COUNTS presiding. Jasper SUTHERLAND, a prominent citizen of Ervington, had been tried in one case for felony and is now being tried in a second. He was found guilty in the first case and fined. Peter NEWBERRY, of Tarpon, this county, had a fine horse killed in his field by lightning the other day. Among representative Democrats of this section James W. MARSHALL seems to be their first choice for Congress. Judge AYERS, of Lebanon, says the sentiment in Russell Co. is strongly in his favor, and further that “Cyclone Jim” can be elected without any doubt. CONTABLE COLLEY’S ACCIDENT Clintwood, VA., March 8* - A sad accident occurred here on yesterday. Sumter COLLEY, constable of this place, accidently shot himself while handling a gun, the ball taking effect in his head. The point of its entrance was just below the right cheek-bone and it ranged upward, lodging in the back portion of the head. Your correspondent was informed that the blood has been flowing from his ears, mouth, and nose. It is thought to be a fatal wound. Mr. COLLEY had been out hunting, and upon his return was handling his gun carelessly when it fired, with the above stated results. Many persons here are entirely too careless with their guns. SAD AFFLICTION Rev. Cale HAYNES, who lives on the Pound River a short distance from this village, lost two of his children the latter part of the past week. The whole family has been “down” with fever. The first to die was a boy of some 7 or 8 yrs. old, and before the burial rites were said over his remains --a young woman 16 or 17 yrs. of age-- passed away. The others seem to be slowly convalescing. Gordon C. CLINE, of Wyoming Co., W.VA, is here on business. DICKENSON’S DELEGATION OF FOUR Clintwood, VA., May 10* - The Democrats of this county held a mass-meeting on yesterday to appoint delegates to the State Convention at Richmond. The meeting was presided over by Hon. Richard L. COUNTS. The following persons were appointed as delegates from the county: F. M. BEVERLY, John WILLIS, E. T. SUTHERLAND, and Thomas K. COLLEY--this county being entitled to four. The sentiment of the meeting seemed to be divided as between HILL & CLEVELAND, but after some wrangling the delegates were instructed to favor CLEVELAND as first choice. These articles have been compiled and reformated by Annette Dameron, Rachel Vore, Louise Vanover Vore and Robert Beverly. These articles can also be seen on Robert's webpage at http://members.xoom.com/rtb/DCN.htm Enjoy!

    1. [VAWISE-L] Collier
    2. Hi Everyone, We are new to this list and are hoping that someone can help us with our Wise County Virginia Colliers. We have great grandfather George Leight Collier b. December 1827, poss. son of Aaron J. and Nancy Elizabeth Collier. George first married Celia Jane and their children were William D., Rosey E., Isaiah H., Aaron H., Isane, Benjamin, Hestor, and Daniel. Then George apparently married Cassie Gilley and their children were Judge Howell, Henry, Martha J., Oma, Emma, Creed, Olley, Alice, Lorenza, and Adeline. Do any of these names sound familiar? Please help if you can. We are stuck. Thanks, Anne

    3. ---------- From: Louise <[email protected]> To: Louise Vore <[email protected]> Subject: Vanovers & Dickenson County Past News Date: Saturday, August 29, 1998 11:08 PM Dickenson County Past News 1890-1900 Submitted by Annette Damron, Robert Beverly and Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore John P. VANOVER, of Freeling, this county, died a few days since, at the advanced age of 84 years. Mr. VANHOVER was a pioneer settler of this section, and came originally from N.C. Dwale, June 10 - Sherman VANOVER, Commissioner of the Revenue of the Western Dist. of this county, was in a justice’s court yesterday, charged with striking one “Shake” ROSS in the head with a billet. The case was sent on to the grand jury, and a bond of $200 required for his appearance to answer an indictment. POST OFFICE REMOVED The post office at this place has been removed from the court-house to the east end of town. Mr. VANAVER, the post master, says that circumstances made the removal necessary. Many still call at the court-house for their mail every day and it is laughable to see the charging upon finding there is no post office. Jackson VANOVER, of Freeling, this county, died of pneumonia-fever recently. Mr. VANOVER was about 45 years old and unmarried. There is beginning to be considerable talk about the Spring election in this community. There are four candidates for the clerkship at this writing: J. C. COUNTS, Ezekiel SUTHERLAND (better known to your readers as “Uncle Ezekiel”, Ira VANOVER & Felix SENTER. The contest will be between COUNTS and “Uncle Ezekiel”, with chances in favor of the latter, it is generally conceded. Postmaster VANAUER, of this place, told your correspondent the other day that he thinks of “pulling up the stakes” and going to Kentucky. The people would regret to lose Mr. VANAUER’s services as postmaster for he gives entire satisfaction to all. The publication of our county paper, the TRIBUNE, will now be resumed after a suspension of some months. Editor VANAVER says he will issue it regularly hereafter. A SINGULAR MOUNTAIN FEUD A Family in Cumberland Mountains are at Loggerheads. Dwale, Dickenson, Co., March 9 - A singular family feud had just terminated in Cumberland mountain, happily, without bloodshed. This section is rather isolated- the mountain forming the boundary line between the States of VA & KY. The people here off in a nook, where they are not affected by the march of civilization. They remain in something of a primitive state, while other sections are keeping pace the progress of the age. There are to be met in these mountains as unique characters as were ever delineated by the versatile pens of Dickens or our own Washington Irving. Old Cornelius VANOVER, who is remembered as the oldest settler of the mountain, was always distant and much reserved in his manners, and went but little into social circles. He reared a large family. Most of his children partook of his strange peculiarities, for which the family has long been noted. The boys all married, but only one of the girls embarked on the matrimonial sea, the others, either from choice or necessity remained under the paternal roof. They range in ages from 25 to 55 or thereabouts. David, the eldest son of the old man, has always lived with-in one-half mile of his father since his marriage. He reared two sons, who have been addicted to bad habits from their boyhood up. From some cause or other there grew up a hardness to express it in the mountain vernacular between David’s family and that of the old man, which was soon kindled into a flame. Dave and his boys armed themselves and swore vengeance against the others. The old man & his family were always afraid of Dave & his force, and usually kept under cover while the latter were about. But for this course, doubtless, there would have been bloodshed. On several occasions clubs and rocks were brought into play but nothing more serious than bruises had resulted from such affairs. This state of things continued for a year or perhaps longer - Dave & his force always on the aggressive side, while the others were on the defensive. At length, realizing that they could not live within the bounds of the same neighborhood (the remainder is missing) Clintwood, VA, Nov 21* - Mrs. Cornelius VANAVER, of Osborn’s Gap, died on yesterday after a lingering illness. She had been afflicted with consumption for some years, and for several months past she had been confined to the sick-room. Deceased was over 60 yrs. of age and had for many years past lived in the vicinity where she died. ----------

    1. [VAWISE-L] RE: Gilley/Bolling, et als.
    2. Attached from Michael Holbrook ([email protected]) who has been working with me on potential clarification as to names of G/Grand Parents, etc.. i.e., Taylor Gilley and Polly Bolling. As noted, it appears all this time, Polly Bolling was hiding under Ezekiel Bolling and Nancy Carr, as one of their off-spring. Prior listings received never broke out the off-spring of this couple. Hope the Bolling listings will help others as well. Regards, Tim :-}}} Subj: Polly Bolling Date: 98-08-29 16:06:28 EDT From: [email protected] (R. Michael Holbrook) To: [email protected] (Tim Gilley) File: PollyBol.txt (17674 bytes) DL Time (28800 bps): < 1 minute Tim, I went to the LDS Family History Center this morning to see if they had anything in their Ancestral File on Polly Bolling, daughter of Jonathan Bolling and Freelove Mullins. There wasn't anything in the file on her, but I found a very intersting entry for Polly Bolling (b. 1834), daughter of Ezekiel Bolling and Nancy Carr. According to Ancestral File information, she married Taylor Gilley. Following is the decendants list (2 generations) for Jeremiah Bolling that was in the LDS Ancestral File. The information in the Ancestral File was submitted by Eloise Bolling Hunter, P.O. Box 285, Highland, CA 92346. I also found Ezekiel Bolling in the 1850 Russell County, Virginia Census. The census gave the following information: Ezekiel Bowlin 35 M Farmer b. Russell Co., Va. Nancy " 38 F b. Tennessee Polly " 16 F b. Russell Co., Va. Elizabeth " 13 F " Sylvania " 10 F " Mahania " 8 F " Baxter " 6 M " Ellender " 5 F " Sally " 1 F " Maybe we have been looking in the right family, just the wrong parents. They only have two computers at the Family History Center and I ran out of my allotted time before I was finished. I'll try to get back there next week to see what else I can find. 2. Does anyone have a copy of the 1880 census and if there is a listing for a William Ellis Sargent. He would be approx. 6, I think. I don't have his father's or mother or any brother or sister info. Thanks in advance.

    1. [VAWISE-L] Vanover Witch Trial
    2. Louise
    3. Copied from Vanover and Allied Families at the (Family History Center) A very unusual trail that took place in Dickenson County, Virginia. The old lady mentioned in the articles, Aunt Jane Dutton, was a granddaughter of Cornelius and Sarah (Hill) Vanover, being a daughter of Elizabeth “Betty” Vanover and Osborn Howell. “Aunt Jane”, as she was known, brought a slander charge against a neighbor who had called here a witch. The resulting trial gained nation wide attention. The case was dismissed. There may be a witch down there, but the good people of Crane Creek over in the South o’ the Mountain don’t mind that overly much. For they have a witch doctor, too; one well able, by his own account, to meet and master the powers of evil. This weird yarn will spin itself to some conclusion in Justice’s Court in Clintwood today. If you’ll just forget that this is the Twentieth Century and put yourself into a believing mood, you will not be amazed at the charges written down on legal paper and served by Deputy Leonard Younce, against one “Rocky Branch” Joe Stanley. None of mankind is exempt from petty trouble. Over in the mountain our troubles are humble, but we suffer from them just the same in our rough way. One’s cow may sicken, a mule may break its leg, or cramp seize the stomach of a human. Now “Rocky Joe”, it is alleged, noticed the manifold afflictions of his neighbors and sympathized with the sufferers in a neighborly way. A learned may is Joe in all the lore of human tribulations. “Rocky”, so it is written, professes more than an inkling of how the Evil One works through human agents. He knows the ways of witches and wizards of diverse kind and condition. They have it written down on paper that Joe, in his pity for his neighbors’ woes, offered, for a consideration, to draw upon his knowledge and powers to combat the moving cause of trouble. His neighbors believed in Joe, and he went into session with the supernatural. He divined, it is said, that Jane Dutton, wife of Isom, held delegated powers from Old Nick. She was using these powers, they say that “Rocky” said, on the people as her master wished them to be used - all against the peace and dignity of Crane Creek aforesaid. We have noted before that Joe could combat the art and mystery of witchcraft. This he would do, they charge, for a consideration of one dollar per case. There was no doubt in the minds of his clients that Joe could produce. For had he not assured them that there had been but three witches in Dickenson County and he had dispelled the other two and could do likewise unto the third? And Joe did produce - to their minds. Mrs. Dutton, growing old, suffered from some of the trials that flesh is heir to. Then her neighbors whispered and even said aloud that the arts of “Rocky Joe” were working in their appointed form and that the witch’s days were numbered. Isom, the husband of Jane, had much faith in the wisdom of a local attorney and sought him for advice. That advice was to bring a criminal action against Joe Stanley for slander. This was done, and the stage was set for as weird a case in court as any community ever had. Such happenings as this are news. An account of it went to the Roanoke Times, and from thence out over the wires of the Associated Press. So Dickenson may enjoy the same kind of notoriety as Wise had basked in during the Edith Maxwell case. The outside world will smile and wonder in all the airs that it can muster up. All this is strange. Is it any stranger than things we see and here of every day? The belief of simple folk in witchcraft, warranted, it is said by the Holy Writ, is not so odd as that men should plot and contrive to raise monuments to themselves or scheme to stand ever in the limelight and make their conscious selves believe their motives are pure and selfless. It is not as strange as that an industrial community should be ready to bend to the dust before three hundred pro__lasm and waste material when ___ mass struts through and throws ___ place a glance. It is not so weird that the outcome of Western civilization, which for two thousand years has worshipped Christ should gather its patriotic oratory and all its colorful pageantry around the body of a soldier blown to bits on the battlefield. It is not more illogical than that the United States should get itself into a fine indignation over Japan’s rape of China. Even our history stinks with the body of broken faith in dealing with the Indians, the robbery of Mexico, and the seizure of Spain’s western empire. It is not more peculiar than President Roosevelt’s hunches and superstitions. And, above all, it is not more wonderful than that any man should have the gall to smile or sneer at the weakness or folly of any of his fellow men. (The above article is from “The Dickenson Forum”, 10-8-37) CURIOUS GATHER TO HEAR TRIAL FROM “ROANOKE TIMES,” 10-9-37 BY CARTER LOWANCE Witchcraft came out of a superstitious past today to touch lightly a 1937 court case and quickly vanish again as “Rocky Joe” Stanley, 83 - year - old patriarch, won dismissal of charges of calling 82 -year - old “Aunt” Jane Dutton a witch. Curious persons by the hundreds came eager for hair-tingling tales of eerie figures riding down the lonely coves and over the towering slopes of the Cumberland, but no witches danced, no caldrons simmered and only one of five witnesses testified that the keen-eyed mountaineer used unknown powers in doctoring cattle. “I haven no power, it’s all God’s,” said “Rocky Joe”, who did not take the stand, after striding from the courtroom with the words, “I knew if I got justice this is what would happen.” Submitted by Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore
