    1. [VAWISE-L] Part 1- Dickenson Ct, Va. News 1890-1900
    2. DICKENSON COUNTY NEWSPAPER 1890-1900 submitted by Annette Damron, Robert Beverly, Rachel Vore and Louise Vanover Vore DEPUTY SHERIFF SHOT CLINTWOOD, VA., December 28 -(Special)- Deputy United States Marshall B. B. Colley, of this place, was seriously shot the night before Christmas at Farmer Yates, one mile above town. The shooting was done with a shotgun loaded with buckshot, sixteen of which entered Colleys left hip. The shooting took place after night, and it is not positively known who committed the act; but one Jim Buckley was arrested on suspicion and lodged in jail. Suspicion also points to another man as the perpetrator of the crime. Colley is suffering intensely, and his recovery is thought to be a matter of uncertainty. I hear that Wilson Bryant, a young man who has figured into the outlawry of Cumberland mountain, was seriously if not fatally shot, near Osbornes Gap, a notch in the mountain, a day or two since. I have heard none of the particulars of the affair. The gap is where the ruffians and outlaws from the borders of the two states gather. There had been several rude log cabins erected there, in which the took shelter; but about a year ago they were nearly all burnt. A DICKENSON SNAKE STORY DWALE, DICKENSON COUNTY, VA., June 21 -(special)- Tandy Fleming and Henry Moore, of this place, went a-fishing in Pound river the other day and had quite and adventure with a large snake. They got into a flat-boat and, floating near the middle of the stream, dropped their hooks into the water, and were patiently awaiting a nibble from a member of the finny tribe as ever did the old angler Izaak Walton, when they heard a splash in the water near the shore. Upon looking in that direction they saw a huge black snake swimming vigorously toward the boat. One of the men was seated in one end of the boat, and the other near the middle. His snakeship reached the vacant end of the boat, and crawled into it, where he very contentedly coiled himself, as if he meant to wait for the catch. These men, not liking their strange, would-be companion, one of them took his fishing-pole and began to punch him with it, when he showed fight by striking furiously at his assailant. After several trials the man succeeded in throwing him into the water, when he began to swim for shore. The man stoutly belabored him with his pole till he gave up the ghost. Deputy-Marshall B. B. Colley, who was shot some day since, is improving, and is in a fair way of recovering. The killing of Wells and Salyer on Caney Ridge on Christmas-Day is still being talked about a great deal, and the general impression seems to prevail that the killing was uncalled for. DICKENSON COUNTY SON MULLINS CAPTURED-A NARROW ESCAPE CLINTWOOD, VA., November 14 -(Special)- A day or two since the officers caught Son Mullins, who was sentenced to two years imprisonment in the penitentiary, but escaped from jail here. They found him in a fodder-house, where he had taken up his nights lodging, near his fathers on Lick Fork. He will be conveyed to the penitentiary in a few days. Emmett Fleming and Jake Mullins were hauling corn near this place on yesterday with a yoke of oxen, and while they were loading a large dead tree that stood near fell, killing one of the oxen. The boys had a narrow escape. Their wagon was smashed to pieced, as well as the yoke under which the oxen were working.

    2. DICKENSON CT.,VA NEWSPAPER submitted by Annette Damron, Robert Beverly Rachel & Louise Vanover Vore BLACK IKE CAUGHT CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTING TO BURN DICKENSON JAIL CLINTWOOD, VA., August 4 -(special)- Isaac Mullins, better known as Black Ike, who is charged with having made an attempt to burn the county jail a few nights ago, was arrested and lodged in jail on Saturday. Sheriff Kiser and a posse of men made a raid on him, where he was in hiding among his relatives a few miles below town. They found him in the woods, and when the officers demanded his surrender he drew a dangerous-looking pistol and attempted to resist them; but was overpowered. There are other charges besides that of firing the jail against him. Black Ike is a notorious character, and there has hardly been a time for the last fifteen years that he has not had an indictment pending against him in a county court. DICKENSON ROMANCE IN WHICH THE MOTHER OF THE YOUNG LADY SETTLED MATTERS CLINTWOOD, VA., February 4 -(special)- Two of her suitors, Henry Stanley and Enoch Mullins, have been stoutly contending against each other for the hand of Miss Clementine Vanover, of Freeling, this county, for some time. It seems that the girl was not decided as to her choice between them, and encouraged both in their suits, but here parents were decidedly opposed to Mullins. Thus matters stood for a time, till a day or two ago, when Mullins presented himself at the house of the girls parents, demanding her in marriage. At this time the mother of the girl grew mad, and ordered her would-be-son off the premises. He stood upon the order of his going, and the old lady seized a piece of clapboard and soundly belabored him with it till it broke into pieces, when she seized the first thing in reach with which she could cudgel him, and renewed the war with increased vigor. Poor Mullins, seeing no chance to secure the object of his devotions, withdrew, doubtless of meditating vengeance, and repaired to the office of the Mayor of Clintwood where he secured a warrant against the old lady, charging her with assault and battery. She was promptly brought to trial before the Mayor, but on a hearing she was as promptly acquitted of the charge. She then, with some show of ceremony, turned the girl over to Stanley, who carried her away in triumph. FROM DWALE, VA. On last Saturday the republicans had a jubilee at Clintwood, over the election of McKinley and Big Jim Walker. They used two blacksmith anvils and powder in letting off explosions, and two of their men, Pelliam Colley and Preston Mullins; were badly burned by standing too close. It is said that one of Colleys eyes is completely destroyed, and the skill is nearly all burned from his face. Mullins face is burned very badly too. There is great rejoicing over the election in the republican household of faith. In the most brazen defiance they are heard hurrahing for Mark Hanan money. They are declaring the General James A. Walker is the runningest man is the world; two years ago we elected him on a free silver platform; then we elected him on a gold platform, and next we will elect him on a free trade platform. One of their men, who, by the ways calls himself a lawyer, said in Clintwood a day or two since, that he wanted every democrat who voted for Bryan disfranchised. Some of these Hannacrats have said since the election is over, that they do not believe that McKinnley will carry out the platform, but that he will return to silver; this they virtually acknowledged that a gold standard is wrong. That Mark Hanans boodle was used here is undeniable, but it took it nearly all to hold their own ......

    3. Submitted by Annette Damron Robert Beverly Rachel & Louise Vanover Vore Silas HALL, a young man in the vicinity of Ava, this county, wa accidentally shot on Monday last. Young HALL and a companion were out together and the former wile showing him his pistol accidentally discharged it, the ball talking effect in his body. The wound is a serious one, and HALL’s recovery is a matter of doubt. Deputy Sheriff HALL, of this place, and a posse of armed men made a raid on the two FLEMING boys, Cal and Henan. It will be remembered that they are indicted together with Doc TAYLOR, for the murder of the MULLINS family last Spring in Wise county. They were staying at the house of their brother some three miles from this place, and Sheriff HALL learning of their whereabouts summoned his guard and went there, but someone had informed the FLEMINGS of the intended raid and they had secreted themselves in the brush, and upon the appproach of the officer and his men they opened fire on them, but without effect. The fire was heavily returned by the officer’s party, but it is not know with what effect. Clintwood, VA., Sept 19* - Eli DAVIS with is wife and sisters was riding to church on yesterday when the mule uppon which Mr. DAVIS was riding took a scare, turned and ran back toward the horses upon which the women were mounted, and the latter were throuwn to the ground and badly hurt -- so ba dly that they had to be taken home in a carriage and have been confined to their beds ever since. Pridemonre FLEMING, the 14 yr. old son of William FLEMING, had the misfortune to have one of his fingers cut off on Saturday. FUGITIVE FROM JUSTICE CAPTURED Clintwood, VA., Nov. 16 - On Thursday Sheriff J. B. KISER and William THORNBURY arrived here with William J. ROSE, who escaped from jail some time ago. It will be remembered that ROSE was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment in the penitentiary for killing his brother, Frank, last spring, and while was confined in jail, awaiting his removal, he effected his escape by knocking the jailer down and running over him. The jailer immediately offered a reward for him, but it was some time before is whereabouts could be ascertained but the authorities. A few days ago, however, KISER & THORNBURY located ROSE in W. VA., and immediately set out to find him, which they did near the place where he was arrested before his trial last summer. He will be conveyed to the penitentary in a few days. NEARING THE CENTURY LINE Dwale, Dickenson, Co., VA. June 27 - Your correspondent learns that there is a man, by the name of Abraham MASTERS, living on Birchfield Creek, in the edge of Wise County, who is 97 yrs. old. He has a son, Reuben MASTERS, who is a very old man--gray-haired and growing decrepit. The elder MASTERS is unable to walk except by the aid of his cane and about he house. His home is in a rather sparsely peopled neighborhood, where he has lived for many, many years and he has seen some of his neighbors live out their allotted three-score and ten years, and die. There is only one colored tax-pyaer in the Western District of Dickenson county. Formerly there were several living on Grassy Creek, but there seems to be feeling existing between the whites and these colored folks, and the latter have all left. A summer normal school is being conducted at Clintwood by Milton W. REMINES, of Dorton, KY. There is a very fair attendence of teachers. Mrs. Andrew FLEMING, of this place, was badly hacked in the face by an angry cow a day or two since. A gash was cut out of the woman’s cheek-bone, some two or three inches long.

January 14 - County Clerk is in session at Clintwood this week, with the new Judge Alexander BEAVERS, presiding. There will not be any business of importance transacted at this term. Notwithstanding the hard times, there is considerable building being done in this section. Dickenson Co. has just had erected a large and commodious court-house at a considerable cost. This is one of the neatest, best finished public buildings in this section of the state. Clintwood, VA., June 19 - John C. SMITH & Alfred SKEEN, two young men of this county, have just returned from Valparaiso, Indiana, where they took a law course. They are bright young men; are proud of their diplomas, and will enter the law profession here soon. Mr. James P. MULLINS, of Ava this Co., had the misfortune to loose his pocket-book while on his way to --- a day or two since. James DAMRON’s little 6-yr.-old daughter fell and seriously cut her face a day or two since. Sheriff George W. HAYNES’s child died of whooping cough the other day. The jail here is being strongly guarded every night, as it is expected an attempt will be made by the friends of William ROSE, who is confined for the murder of his brother, to rescue him. There are several desperate characters belonging to the gang. Robert WRIGHT & Emory CHASE have just returned from the National Normal University at Lebanon, O., where they have been studying for the last few months. WRIGHT took a course in short hand and typewriting, and CHASE mathematics and surveying. Clintwood, VA., Mar. 14* - William R. STONE, a prominent farmer, near Ava, this county, was arraigned before Justice HYLTEN yesterday upon a warrant charging him with having firing several shots at one Osborn FARMER with intent to kill. He was bound in a bond of $1,000 to answer an indictment at the next term of court. The proof showed some provocation on the part of FARMER. The two men had had a difficulty before. Creed McFALL, a young man of 17 years, died yesterday at his father’s home, near here. He was stricken down with fever and lingered only a few days. He was an estimable young man and will be sadly missed in the community. The publication of our county paper, the TRIBUNE, will now be resumed after a suspension of some months. Editor VANAVER says he will issue it regularly hereafter. [*Correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch] John McROSE, a widower, who has seen the flowers bloom 81 summers, was married to on Miss REICE of 32 on yesterday. Mr. NICHOLSON is a member of a northern syndicate which owns a vast amount of standing timber throughout this section. ___. S.
