    1. Re: [VAWISE-L] Craft and Wheatley
    2. Nicole, My paternal G grfather, John L. Boggs , b. July 27, 1876 in Letcher Co, KY married Mary Craft (or Kraft?) no dob, dod; Mary's father's first name is unknown, mother was a Chisenhall. [Family lore /aka my father's memory (!) has it that Mary's mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian; dad remembers her stirring up poltices and mixing up all kinds of stuff whenever he or his brothers and sisters were sick as little kids!! ] . Mary had at least 2 siblings, a brother Ike Craft (?Kraft) and Jane Craft (?Kraft) who married a Wheatley. Could this be part of the same family group?? Is my "Ike" your Samuel Isaac Craft?? I have yet to hear of another Chisenhall line. Unfortunately, I have no first names for my Mary's parents, or any other known children at this time. The dob for your Samuel Isaac Craft was not listed in your post. If you know it, does it seem feasible that your Samuel Isaac is my Ike? I do know that John Boggs and Mary Craft/Kraft Boggs had a total of 7 children -my earliest known dob for a child of theirs is the 3rd one, in 1902. >From the information I have, this family then stayed in Wise Co, VA.. What do you think? Merry Christmas, and maybe we found a common link! Write & let me know! May the Peace of Christ be with you all ! Diana Boggs Mullens [email protected] [email protected]

    3. I am looking for information regarding the family of Isaac Samuel Craft. He was born about in VA and died December 16, 1949 in Wise County, VA. He married Savanna Wheatley, and their children were (or included) Ethel, Oscar, Bruce and Pearl. According to Isaac's death certificate, his parents were Samuel Craft of Kentucky (?) and Clara Dean Chisenhall of Virginia. Savanna's parents are unknown at this time (to me, anyway.) Any information or leads regarding this family group would be greatly appreciated. -Nicole [email protected] http://www.mindspring.com/~nicolecastle/

They must be two separate men, since the second Edward "Old Ned" Sizemore who was the ancestor discussed under Eastern Cherokee claims lived until approximately 1858 according to the Guion Miller testimony taken in 1908 (see below). In one place, Kennedy claims specifically to be a descendant of the one who was the "self-proclaimed Cherokee," but dates his birth to 1725.

    1. [VAWISE-L] Introduction
    2. Greetings, My name is Brenda Collins Dillon. I am new to this list but not new to genealogy. I have been researching my family names for 25+ years. surnames include : *COLLINS*SPENCER*TAYLOR*BENNETT*WILLIAMS*ROARK* I am co-host of Appalachian Mountain Families, a website that started out with a 2 MB homepage and has grew to 33 MB with a little of everything. My parnter in this adventure is Frankie Blackburn, better known as Gypsy. We are both Collins researchers and our latest venture was to write an article on our Collins lines which was just published in the Appalachian Quarterly, December issue. It is our first time at writting but the response so far has been great. I come to this list to see if I can find anything connections to my Meredith Collins line. Meredith b. 1760 Va. lived 1799-1800 in Russell County, Va. but I am not sure where as the lines changed many times. I have never been able to find deed records showing he owned property but since he moved to Shelby Creek, in Floyd Co. ( later to become Pike Co) by 1810, leaving his eldest son, Bradley, behind on the family property one assumes there was land but I have not found it as yet. Also I have several children fathered by Meredith and would like to find records to verify this. Any assistance in my search would be appreciated. If I can help others along the way don't hesitate to ask. Reguards, Brenda Collins Dillon http://members.xoom.com/Appalachian/ ( update should be competed in next week; some files are huge, please be patient when opening them)

Would like to confirm which story is true. They had a son FLOYD M. RASNICK born 1907 died 1909. Also in the family bible is Addie V. Collinsworth born 1776. 1. [VAWISE-L] # 1 Dickenson County , Va. Newspaper
    2. DICKENSON JOTTINGS DWALE, DICKENSON COUNTY., DECEMBER 1 -(SPECIAL)- The 4-year-old-son of George Fleming, near this place, had the misfortune to fall from a fence and sustained serious injuries on yesterday. His head is badly cut, and it is thought that his skull is fractured. DICKENSON SURRENDERED AND ACCUSED OTHERS- EXCITEMENT SUBSIDING DWALE, VA., February 17 -(special)- Your correspondent learns that Ab. Vance, who was suspected of being connected with the burning of John Trivitts barn some time ago, has surrendered himself to the authorities. He had understood that the Commonwealths Attorney had agreed to that, if there were more than one party connected with the burning in any way, any one of them who would surrender himself and turn evidence against the others should not be prosecuted. Now Vance says that he did the burning, but was hired to do it by two others, both of whom Trivitt had some difficulties with. It is said that these parties are on the dodge from the authorities, and it is quite probable that both men will leave the State to escape the law. The excitement over the killing of Robert Baker, at Clintwood, is abating. It is thought the lynching mob will not materialize, and that Farmer will not be molested. The Clintwood Tribune, a small Republican sheet, has resumed publication, after a suspension of some months, with L. M. Vanover in the editorial chair. THE DICKENSON HOMICIDE DWALE, DICKENSON COUNTY, VA., February 6 -(special)- There is a great deal of excitement over the killing of Robert Baker, at Clintwood, by William Farmer, as reported in this correspondence at the time of the occurrence. Nothing new seems to have developed in the case, except that it was a mistake as to Bakers drawing his pistol, as he had none about his person at the time; though he had told Farmer some time before the trouble that he had a pistol, and the latter doubtless thought he had as he ran his hand into his pocket as if he would draw one, at the same time making violent threats. There have been fears that an attempt would be made to lynch Farmer by Bakers friends, as they seem to be enraged over the killing. Both men were very reckless and dissipated, and the occurrence was not at all any surprise. John B. Mullins, near Clintwood, accidentally shot himself in the thigh, while carelessly handling a pistol, a day or two since. Dr. Phipps was called in, and extracted the ball. HE GOT TWO YEARS DWALE, VA., January 20 -(special)- Isaac Mullins alias Black Ike, whose trial was noticed in this correspondence last week, was sentenced to two years imprisonment in the penitentiary. The jury consumed two hours in arriving at a verdict. He was charged with attempting to burn the county jail.... Little Edgar Ray Beverly, who has been very ill for some time, seems to be convalescent now. Miss Mary, daughter of Eli Wright, of near this place, and William Atrip were married at the residence of the brides parents a few day since. It is said that two persons who are suspected of having burned J. F. Trivitts barn and ___ his storehouse, at Freeling, last week will be arrested soon. HOW MOONSHINERS GET EVEN DWALE, VA., January 13 -(special)- An account of a raid on the moonshiners of Cumberland county by the Deputy United States Marshals, was given in this correspondence a few days ago. The raiders have since captured six other moonshiners and taken them before Commissioner Rush, of Clintwood, where they were bound over to answer indictments at Federal Court. One David Mullins, a farmer, living in that neighborhood, gave the officers aid, and assisted them in ferreting the sinners out, thereby incurring the ill will of the shiners and their friends. So on yesterday morning, Mr. Mullins found his mare out on the commons, with a large cow-bell fastened to her neck, and a still worm tied to her tail. She had been taken out of the stable in the night, rigged up after this fashion, and turned loose. This, of course, greatly frightened the animal, and she had badly hurt herself in trying to get free from the trappings. Annette Damron, Robert Beverly, Rachel & Louise Vanover Vore

    2. LETTER FROM DWALE [FRANK M. BEVERLY, COR.] DWALE, VA., Jan. 15, 1897. Isaac Mullins, alias Black Ike, a notorious character, is on trial in court at Clintwood this week, charged with trying to burn the county jail last summer. It is said that the Commonwealth is making a very strong case against him, and it is quite probable that he will get a trip to the pen. His son, Paris, has just returned from serving a two-years sentence there, for breaking into a storehouse and stealing goods. Black Ike is about forty-five years of age, and has always been in some trouble since he was large enough. There has not been a court held here fort he last fifteen years in which he did not have an indictment pending against him. Nothing new seems to have developed in the case, except that it was a mistake as to Bakers drawing his pistol, as he had none about his person at the time; though he had told Farmer some time before the trouble that he gad a pistol, and the latter doubtless thought he had as he ran his hand into his pocket as if he would draw one, at the same time making violent threats. There have been fears that an attempt would be made to lynch Farmer by Bakers friends, as they seem to be enraged over the killing. Both men were very reckless and dissipated, and the occurrence was not at all any surprise. HOMICIDE IN DICKENSON KILLED IN A QUARREL OVER A GAME OF CARDS DWALE, VA., February 3 -(special)- Robert L. Baker, a lumberman of near this place, was shot and instantly killed at Clintwood, yesterday evening by William Farmer, a paint. The difficulty came up over a game of cards, in which the two had been engaged nearly all day in a law office. When the dispute arose between the contestants Baker told Farmer that he would kill him. The latter arose and started out, but was followed by Baker, who drew a pistol and began to flourish it in a manner that indicated violent intentions. Then Farmer drew his pistol and fired three shots, one taking effect in the head and one in the heart, and the other in the body. Baker fell and expired at once. I do not think that anyone but Mr. McFall was in the office at the time of the occurrence. As soon as the deed was done Farmer ran into the street and said that he had shot Baker, and wanted to put himself in charge of the Sheriff, and he was at once placed in jail. Baker was about 35 years of age. DICKENSON COUNTY DWALE, VA., March 13 -(special)- County Court is in session at Clintwood this week, having convened Monday, with Judge George L. Counts presiding. A special grand jury was empanelled, and found an indictment against William E. Farmer, who is charged with killing Robert Baker, as reported in the Dispatch some time ago. An effort will be made by Farmers friends at this term to secure bail for him. I hear that several well-to-do parties offer to go on his bond. DICKENSON TRIAL OF E. W. FARMER, NOW IN PROGRESS AT CLINTWOOD DWALE, DICKENSON CO., VA., April 17 -(special)- The trial of E. W. Farmer, who is charged with killing Robert Baker, is going on at Clintwood this week. The jury are all from the far side of the county, and are L. D. R. Owens, George Johnson, J. C. Sutherland, S. J. Tiller, Wm. J. Compton, J. F. duty, J. W. Robinson, George Wampler, Jacob Lambert, M. A. Buchanan, J. P. Sutherland, and Luke Pannel. The Commonwealth is represented by Wm. A. Ayers, of Lebanon, T. M. Alderson, of Wise, Wm. H. Werth, of Coeburn, and A. A. Skeen, of Clintwood the defense by F. H. Evans, of Grundy, J. S. Campbell, of Coeburn, W. R. Hughes, of Coeburn, and J. C. Smith of Clintwood. Some very damaging proof has been made against the defendant; but at this stage of the trial, it would be difficult to form any definite conclusion as to the probable result. The trial will probably last till sometime next week. ROBERT BAKERS MURDERERS DWALE, DICKENSON CO., VA., April 21 -(special)- E. W. Farmer was convicted of the murder of Robert Baker, at this term of the County court, and sentenced to eighteen years confinement in the penitentiary. Eight of the jurymen were for hanging him, and for for sending him to the pen. A compromise was affected and the above verdict agreed upon. Farmers lawyers will ask the court to set aside the verdict of the jury, but it is thought that they will not succeed in this. Farmer came to Clintwood some two years ago, and has been engaged in painting. He is about thirty-five years old and has a wife and two small children. I hear that the relations of John H. Branham, who was killed while trying to arrest the Fleming outlaws will bring his remains here for final interment. One of the Flemings, Henan, will be brought to Wise in a few days, the other one having been killed. Doc. Swindall has been brought home, and is in a very serious condition from the effects of the wounds he received in the fight. There is no doubt that he commonwealth will make a case against Henan Fleming strong enough to convict. The murders which he helped to commit were among the most dastardly known to the history of crime. Annette Damron, Robert Beverly, Rachel & Louse Vanover Vore

OUTLAW POTTER, A VICTIM OF HIS OWN REVOLVER Member of a notorious Gang of Desperadoes Accidentally Kills Himself in Dickenson COEBURN, VA., July 14 [Special] - New has just been received here from Dickenson county that Garfield Potter, one of the gang of Kentucky outlaws, who have been terrorizing the people of Cumberland mountain and the adjacent country recently, let his pistol fall from his belt, which caused a discharge, the ball taking effect just below the left nipple and killing him almost instantly. The gang with which Potter associated, besides several women, included George Potter, Garfield Potter, George Fleming, Creed Fleming, and others who came and went as suited their convenience. These Flemings are closely related to Cal and Henan Fleming, who, together with Doc Taylor murdered the Mullins family as Pound Gap in ‘92. These men took part in the Vance-Vanover feud on Elkhorn Creek, in Kentucky, last spring, and had to leave there, after which they took up quarters in an old log cabin on the Virginia side near Osborn’s Gap. They have since that time been a constant terror to the citizens by their lawlessness and threats of violence. Four of the gang were out on Pound river, a few miles from their “headquarters”, on the night before the accident occurred. They called at Harve Bryant’s about midnight where they spent the remainder of the night. After breakfast, the went out, and were sitting down at a game of cards when the fatal accident occurred. The father of the Potter boys, who lives in Kentucky, was told the news, and he came for the body of his son. Quite a number of the gang’s enemies also came over, all armed to the teeth. They found only George Potter of the gang, and agreed that he might go across “the line” to see his brother buried; and then take his chances of escape. There are several felony indictments pending against George in the court of Pike County, and they will probably land him in jail to answer for his wrong doings. Great excitement prevails there, as part of this gang are supposed to be in hiding among the mountains, and it is feared that there will be depredations committed by them. OUTLAW KILLED FREELING, VA., Aug. 13 -(SPL)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him "Son" Mullins one of the gang was with Potter in a house, but escaped. Potter fought desperately up to the end. Sixteen balls were found to have entered his body. One of the posse was cut across the face by a bullet from the outlaw’s pistol. GEORGE POTTER KILLED AFTER BATTLE FOR LIFE THE CRIMINAL FOUGHT DESPERATELY, BUT FINALLY PERISHED WITH SIXTEEN BULLETS IN HIS BODY FREELING, VA., Aug 12 -(Special)- George Potter, the Kentucky outlaw, who has been terrorizing the people of this section, was killed on Lick Fork on Saturday evening, by a posse of men, who were trying to arrest him upon a warrant charging him with the crime of assault. “Son” Mullins, one of the gang, was with Potter in a house, where the officers found them; but he escaped, though it is thought he was fatally shot. Potter fought desperately to the end. Sixteen balls entered his body; his head was frightfully mangeled. One of the officers men was cut across the face by a ball from the outlaw’s pistol, two more were shot through another’s hat, while a third had a hole put through his vest. It is probable that the relatives of the dead man will take his remains to their home in Kentucky for internment. Potter has also been in the penitentiary of Kentucky and North Carolina. Potter’s wife (with whom he has been living for some time) says that he has killed four men to her knowledge. His father has paid over thousands of dollars to defend him while in the hands of the law. ONLY THIRTY YEARS OLD George Potter was bout thirty years old and had served three terms in the penitentiaries of as many states. He was sent to the Virginia pernientiary from Washington county for horse-stealing, served a term in the North Carolina penitentiary for robbery, and also a term in the Kentucky penitentiary for stealing cattle. He was wanted in Tennessee for killing a boy who refused to give him some liquor in which he was in charge. A few days before his death, Potter boasted of his record saying that he had killed four men and shot twelve. He had many times declared that he would never be taken alive--that not even his Creator could arrest him--and upon these occassions he would use language that it would be sacreligious to repeat. --part0_911017071_boundary--
