These are old news paper clippings, newspaper and author unknown , some by Frank Monroe Beverly. submitted by Annette Damron, Robert Beverly, Rachel and Louise Vanover Vore ANOTHER FLEMING DESPERADO HE FIRES INTO THE HOUSE OF A MAN, WHOSE WIFE DIES FROM FRIGHT CLINTWOOD, VA., February 9 -(special)- Orb Fleming, a brother to the noted outlaws, Cal and Henan, has been very angry, boisterous, and overbearing since he heard that his brothers had met their defeat in West Virginia a few days ago. He was in Kentucky when he first received news of the affair, and he grew very angry and defiant, and went to the house of a man against who he was prejudiced, drew his pistol, and fired several shots into the house. The mans wife was in a delicate condition, and the fright produced by Flemings act caused her death within three hours. He immediately left there, but is wanted by the authorities. He came into this neighborhood, but has left here, and some say he has gone to West Virginia...resembles Cal, who was killed in the fight with the officers. As he came to this vicinity from Kentucky recently, he fired into a school-house where school was in session, about ten miles from here, and fired several shots into a flock of sheep, killing some of them, only a few miles out of town. He has grown desperate since he heard the fate of his brothers, and is terrorizing the people where ever he goes. JEFFERSON FLEMING DEAD THE FATHER OF THE FAMOUS MULLENS OUTLAWS GONE-SKETCH OF HIS LIFE CLINTWOOD, VA., August. Jefferson Fleming the father of the outlaws, Cal and Fleming, died at his home in the upper end of the county of Friday last, after an illness of several weeks duration. Jefferson Fleming was born in 1820 on Sandy River, in Kentucky, and was here before 73 years old. He always led a reckless, inconsistent life and was dreaded by his neighbors as an ill-natured and disagreeable man. He has been married twice. His first wife was married when he became acquainted with her, and after a brief acquaintance her husband was missing and to this day the fate of the poor man has not been revealed; but Fleming and this woman were married in a short time after this occurrence. They lived together for some time, but at length another woman crossed his path and he deserted no. 1, secured a divorce and married no. 2. He is said to have been the father of thirty-one children, several of them being illegitimate. His first wife is yet living near here, an old gray headed woman, who is said to have entertained the same regard for him that she did in other days. Fleming was charged to have been connected with Pound Gap murder, for which his sons were indicted as an accomplice; but when the trial was called the witness was absent having left for parts unknown through fear and therefore the case was dismissed. CLINTWOOD, VA., Feb 3, 1894 Editor Virginian: Your correspondent has just learned that Orb Fleming, a brother to the outlaws, Cal and Henan, shot and killed a woman in the vicinity of Pound Gap, where the Mullins family was murdered in the spring of 1892. This woman was the widow of Wilson Mullins, one of the murdered parties of the family. The report says that she about the premises of her home, and was shot by some one secreted in the brush, some distance from the house, and circumstance points to Fleming as the proprietor of the foul crime. The theory of the motive is that, as Mrs. Mullins was the material witness in the case against Henan Fleming, she was killed to destroy the evidence against him. Young Fleming is a desperate character and is following in the footsteps of his brother, despite their terrible fate, and his course will inevitably bring him closer to the same end. He is not more than 20 years of age. CLINTWOOD, VA., July 27 - Charley Dameron, the 14-year-old son of our townsman, Harvey Dameron, died of fever on Tuesday last. Young Dameron had been confined to the sick-room for some time, and had the best medical attendance within reac h, but all to no purpose. There is considerable excitement here over the fight between the outlaws Cal and Henan Fleming and the officers in West Virginia a few days ago. Branham and Swindal, who are reported as killed, were well known here, as were also the outlaws. The bodies of the outlaws are to be brought to Wise County to be claim the reward: and their brothers, who live in this vicinity, have gone to bring him here for burial. They were desperate characters, and were indicted in Wise County as accomplices in the murder of the Mullins family at Pound Gap in the spring of 92. Doc Taylor was executed at Wise for the same crime last fall. FLEMING KILLS FRANK PHILLIPS CLINTWOOD, VA., October 20 - It is reported here that Frank Phillips, who figured so prominently in the McCoy-Hatfield vendetta, and the Fleming outlaws were engaged in a difficulty recently and that the former was killed. The affair is to reported to have taken place in Kentucky, where Phillips lived, and where it is thought the Flemings have been hiding from the Wise county authorities for some time. The report is not given full credit here, but nothing is yet definitely known concerning the matter. Some boys caught a fine horse of William Flemings yesterday and put a halter on him, but as he had not been broken he at once began to rear, plunge, and strike with his forefeet and, falling with his head against a log, killed himself. AFFAIRS IN DICKENSON RECOVERY OF MR. RAMEY-DEATH OF MR. CASTLE CLINTWOOD, VA., May 7-(special)- Jacob T. Ramey, who was sent to the asylum as a lunatic last fall, has so far recovered as to be able to return. Mr. Ramey was a merchant of this place, but returns to find his business in a bad shape, his creditors having had all his property taken in charge by officers for his debt. Henry Castle, a farmer near this place, died of consumption on Thursday last, after a lingering illness. Mr. Castle leaves a wife and several children. A week or two ago some parties from Kentucky arrested John Hammon, a young man of this county, who is charged with stealing a horse from a stable in Pike county, Ky., and have been waiting for a return from the Governor, upon who a requisition was made for Hammon. Meanwhile, Hammon has been trying to play crazy, as he doubtless prefers the insane-asylum to the Kentucky penitentiary; but as the trick will not work he seems to have abandoned it and is sane again. Work is progressing rather slowly on the store-room, which Columbus Phipps is building for the Yellow Popular Lumber Company. We understand that the house it to be ready by June 1, under the contract.
I really enjoyed the old newspaper clippings!!! Thanks Penny in KY

Hi List: The following excerpt on the Long Hunters is on line at: <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/Longhunters.html>. This website is provided by the Friends of Metropolitan Archives of Nashville and Davidson County, TN. I thought some of you might be interested in it since the Long Hunters also visited and hunted in our part of Virginia and Kentucky. More information on the Nashville area and Davidson Co. TN genealogy resources can be found at <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661>. Apologies to those who receive more than one copy of this. Martha "The Long Hunters" History of Davidson County, Tennessee, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers, by Prof. W. W. Clayton, J. W. Lewis & Co., Philadelphia, 1880, Reproduced by Higginson book Company, 1996, p. 15. The following account of the "Long Hunters" with a few slight changes, is quoted from Ramsey's "Annals of Tennessee": "On the 2d of June, 1769, a large company of adventurers was formed for the purpose of hunting and exploring in what is now Middle Tennessee. As the country was discovered and settled by the enterprise and defended by the valor of these first explorers, we choose to give their names, the places from which they came, and such details of their hazardous journeyings as have been preserved. "May the time never come when the self-sacrificing toil and the daring hardihood of the pioneers of Tennessee will be forgotten or undervalued by their posterity. The company consisted of more than twenty men, some of them from North Carolina, others from the neighborhood of the Natural Bridge, and others from the infant settlement near Inglis' Ferry in Virginia. The names of some of them follow: John Rains, Kasper Mansker, Abraham Bledsoe, John Baker, Joseph Drake, Obadiah Terrill, Uriah Stone, Henry Smith, Ned Cowan, Robert Crockett. The place of rendezvous was eight miles below Fort Chissel on New River. They came by the head of Holston, and crossing the north fork, Clinch and Powell's Rivers, and passing through Cumberland Gap, discovered the southern part of Kentucky, and fixed a station-camp at a place since called Price's Meadow, in Wayne County, where they agreed to deposit their game and skins. The hunters here dispersed in different directions, the whole company still traveling to the southwest. They came to Roaring River and the Cany fork at a point far above the mouth and somewhere near the foot of the mountain. Robert Crockett was killed near the head-waters of Roaring River when returning to the camp, provided for two or three days' traveling; the Indians were there in ambush and fired upon and killed him. The Indians were traveling to the north, seven or eight in company. Crockett's body was found on the war-track leading from the Cherokee Nation towards the Shawnee tribe. All the country through which these hunters passed was covered with high grass; no traces of any human settlement could be seen, and the primeval state of things reigned in unrivaled glory, though under dry caves, on the side of creeks, they found many places where stones were set up that covered large quantities of human bones; these were also found in the caves, with which the country abounds. They continued to hunt eight or nine months, when part of them returned in April 1770. "The return of Findley and Boone to the banks of the Yadkin, and of the explorers whose journal has just been given to their several homes, produced a remarkable sensation. Their friends and neighbors were enraptured with the glowing descriptions of the delightful country they had discovered, and their imaginations were inflamed with the account of the wonderful products which were yielded in such bountiful profusion. The sterile hills and rocky uplands of the Atlantic country began to lose their interest when compared with the fertile valleys beyond the mountains. A spirit of further exploration was thus excited in the settlements on New River, Holston, and Clinch, which originated an association of about forty stout hunters, for the purpose of hunting and trapping west of Cumberland Mountains. Equipped with their rifles, traps, dogs, blankets, and dressed in the hunting shirt, leggins, and moccasins, they commenced their arduous enterprise in the real spirit of hazardous adventure, through the rough forest and rugged hills. The names of these adventurers are not now known. The expedition was led by Col. James Knox. The leader and nine others of the company penetrated to the lower Cumberland, and making there an extensive and irregular circuit, adding much to their knowledge of the country, after a long absence returned home. They are known as the "Long Hunters.' " (Posted with permission)

I noticed a query from Rick and Joann Grafton about Rameys in Wise. I am searching for the same families. I wonder if it's the same line? I need help finding information on Daniel M. Ramey and daughter Allis Ramey spelled sometimes as Alice. Any help at all would greatly appreciated. I've posted so many queries I'm about to give up. Hello All & Happy New Year, Does anyone have a Wise County 1880 Census that could do a lookup? I am hoping to find: (Benjamin?) Ferell STRANGE with his parents William Ferrel Strange and Martha Jane (Hash) Strange. I have found several spellings of Ferell --> Furl, Ferrel, Fearl, Farrel and there are probably more!!! I have also found that he is listed with different first names in the: 1900 Knott Co., KY Census he is listed as Benjamin Stronger 1910 Knott Co., KY Census he is listed as Farrel Strange 1920 Knott Co., KY Census he is listed as B.F. Strange Thank you for your time and HAPPY New Year! Cheryl Strange-Laetsch ********************************************** Researching: Dimeck, Hall, Mullins, Perry, Sawmiller, Strange.
Happy New Year Everyone! I have made some significant updates to the 48th Virginia web site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vascott/48th/index48.htm The 48th was recruited from Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, and Washington counties. Letters, photographs, family histories, and other pieces of information have been added. Please drop by and take a look. If you have any items you would like to include, send them along to me and I'll be happy to add them. If you are a contributor, please make sure that the information is accurate and the links working. Get back to me with any changes. Also, my wife is beginning her research to complete the last step in obtaining her Master Teacher certification from the American Needlepoint Guild. She would like to do it on Civil War era quilts from the SW Virginia/East Tennessee/Kentucky area. Information seems to be sparse. She is particularly interested in any diaries by women that mention quilting or needlework. If anyone can provide any leads, she would be most appreciative. She can be reached at [email protected] Have a great January 1. Regards, Vernard Bond

Hello again, I thought I would run this message again in hopes of finding my Thomas. Thomas Wesley ROSE b 07 May 1880 Claiborne Co., TN d 03 Jul 1943 in Monroe Co., WV [aka Wes, Wesley or Tom] First married Bessie Mae OSBORNE b 1884 in Lee Co., Va m 03 August 1901 In Lee Co., Va. Bessie died in 1921 in wise Co., Va. On his marriage record his parents were listed as A.C. and Millie Rose of TN. Bessie parents was Jake Osborne. On his death certificate in 1943, his second wife Ella Mae PERSINGER BROWNING listed his place of birth in KY and his parents as John A. and Mary Harper Rose. My cousin, Junior Bentley, grandson of Bessie and Wes stated Wes' parents were John and Mary Rose. He preceeded to list the sibs as: Lizzie Rose who married Ed Carpenter, William Rose, John Jr., Flora, and George. When I placed a post for more information on this family, Jim Holland contacted me and stated John ROSE married Nancy Jane HARPER and had the following children: Elizabeth who married a Carpenter, Bill Rose, John Jr., Murah Ellen, and Asa Rose. Coincidence?? I contacted Christine Rose at the Rose family Assn and she stated that the information was wrong, there was no mention of Thomas in the John and Nancy ROSE family. I cannot, nor can Christine, find any information on a John and Mary Harper Rose. I decided to try some census records. I placed a post and Wesley cannot be found on the 1900 CLaiborne Co., TN nor the Lee Co., Va nor Wise Co., Va census records. I spoke with another granddaughter I recently discovered of Bessie's and Wes' - Reba's daughter who states that she remembers an Asa and Mary Ellen - she believes that is our family [that Jim Holland mentioned], however, again NO mention of Thomas Wesley Rose. Wesley was located with Bessie on the 1910 Wise Co., Va Census with three children: Minnie, Reba, and Melvin. Census stated wesley and his parents were born in TN. He was a coal miner. Bessie was the mother of 4 children, but only 3 were living. Most of Bessie's children were born in the Lee Co., Va area. Wesley married Ella in Monroe Co., WV in 1923. Most of their children were born in the McDowell Co., WV area then later Monroe Co., WV. I have talked with surviving members of the Wes and Ella family and no one can remember anything about Wes' family!! What a shame :( Footnote: Christine Rose at the Rose Family Assn thinks my Wesley may be related to the Braxton Co., WV Isaac Rose family or the John Rose family of WV/VA. If anyone has any information on this family please let me know. Thanks, Jerry Rose > Barbara Love wrote: > > > > OK Jerry: > > I remember now. Dear Cousins, I have found a couple sites you all may find of interest. They are about my 2nd Greatuncle, "Dock" Moran Lee Boggs. There is an area that shows a biography and also information about his banjo playing/writing. The addresses are pretty long, but I think they're worth the trouble: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi- bin/mserver/SID=1639294123/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/ArtistID=FRN- BOGGS*D and http://www.metrotimes.com/music/rr/18/28/rr18_28dockboggs.html This last address was a review of Country Blues: Complete Early Recordings (1927-1929) and showed a listing of personnel (for the album) as: Dock Boggs -vocals and banjo Hub Mahaffey - guitar Hayes Shepherd - banjo and vocals Bill Shepherd - fiddle and vocals I don't know if the other musicians are familiar to this post, but probably somebody out there will either remember them or know of them. Sure hope this is as interesting to the list as it was to me and my family when I stumbled upon it while "surfing" the net one day!! Wishing you all a Blessed New Year! Diana Boggs Mullens
Dear Jack, I've searched through all my Lawson information and I have no listings for the family/people you have. That is not to say that the families are not linked, but I have nothing at all on Emmanuel, John or Madison Lawson, nor any of the women who became their wives. I was hoping to find a common link here for you, but my info doesn't have it. Sorry! Happy Hunting! Diana Boggs Mullens
Hi Diana, I saw your post on the Wise Co. Mailing List. I don't have anything on the Boggs name, but i'm hoping you can help me with some Lawson info. My ggg Grandfather Emanuel Lawson (no dates) md. Mary Polly Frazier (no dates), they had at least one son my gg Grandfather John Lawson 1-13-1830 - 7-12-1901 md. 1st Lucinda Minor (no dates), they had at least two children Elizabeth and Perry Lawson. John md. 2nd Frankie Singleton 1839 - 9-13-1917, dau of Zachariah G. Trent 1801 Grayson Co. Va. - 1871 Hamblen Co. Tn. and Mirah or Myra Singleton (no dates), Zachariah and Myra never married as far as I know. John and Frankie had eleven children, and I decend from their oldest son Madison. Emanuel and Myra Singleton are listed as living together and with more children, on the Hancock Co. Tn. census for 1850,60 and 70. I am tring to find where Emanuel came from before he was in Hancock Co., who his parents were and if the children living with him and Myra are theirs. The above all occured in Hancock Co., but Wise Co. is only a rocks throw away, so I'm hoping you will have some info with the Lawson info you have that will help me. thanks in advance, Jack Lawson
Diana, I think our two families are very likely linked. Let me know what you think of all this. (My mother's first husband (my brother's father) was a Boggs; I may have to look into that Wise County line at another time.) First, here's what I have: Descendants of Samuel Craft Generation No. 1 1. SAMUEL1 CRAFT was born in KY. He married CLARA DEAN CHISENHALL. Child of SAMUEL CRAFT and CLARA CHISENHALL is: 2. i. ISAAC SAMUEL2 CRAFT, b. Abt. 1885, Wise County, VA; d. December 16, 1949, Wise County, VA. Generation No. 2 2. ISAAC SAMUEL2 CRAFT (SAMUEL1) was born Abt. 1885 in Wise County, VA, and died December 16, 1949 in Wise County, VA. He married (1) SAVANNA WHEATLEY. He married (2) ROSA T.. Children of ISAAC CRAFT and SAVANNA WHEATLEY are: i. ETHEL3 CRAFT, b. September 04, 1913, Dorchester, Wise County, VA; d. December 08, 1984, Henrico County; m. TROY PALMER CASTLE, September 15, 1929, Dunbar, Wise County, VA. ii. OSCAR CRAFT, m. EMMA CASTLE, June 17, 1929, Wise County, VA. iii. BRUCE CRAFT. iv. PEARL CRAFT, m. WELLS. ---------------------------------------- Next, another researcher (Martha Short) was kind enough to pass on some Wise County census findings to me, and when I combine your partial family and mine, it looks like a match: The family of Samuel C. Craft is listed in the 1880 Wise Co., VA Census (transcribed by Rhonda Roberson) as follows: Samuel C. Craft, white, male, age 24, K, K, K* Clerinda, female, age 22, V, K, V James H., son, age 8, V, K, V Isaac S., son, age 6, V, K, V Nancy J., dau, age 4, V, K, V Mary M., dau, age 2, V, K, V *place of birth of person, of father, of mother K=Kentucky, V=Virginia living next door to Samuel and Clerinda are James and Nancy Chisenhall who appear to be the right age to be Clerinda's parents. They are listed as follows: James Chisenhall, white, male, age 57, V, V, V Nancy, female, age 52, V, V, V Annie, dau, age 21, V, V, V Harrison, son, age 18, V, V, V Malissa C., dau, age 13, V, V, V Living on the other side of Samuel and Clerinda are Francis Chisenhall, white, male, age 25, V, V, V and Sarah A., female, age 20, V, V, V A note says that Francis and Sarah were married within the year. These are the only two Chisenhalls listed in the 1880 Wise Co., Census. No other Craft households are listed near Samuel and Clerinda. In the 1860 Wise Co., Census (transcribed by Rhonda Roberson) the following Craft household is listed: David K. Craft, age 23, born in KY Sarah, age 22, born in KY Henry, age 2, born in KY Samuel, age 7 mo., born in VA >From the Wise County, VA Death Register 1856-1894 (transcribed by Rhonda Robertson) comes the following: Martin Chisenhall age 2 mo 2 day, died Nov. 11, 1857 son of James and Nancy Chisenhall. Mallisa Gardner age 19, died Nov. 10, 1886 of fever, dau of James & Nancy Chisenhall, wife of James F. Gardner. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, December 23, 1998 10:33 PM Subject: Re: [VAWISE-L] Craft and Wheatley >Nicole, >My paternal G grfather, John L.
