    3. SHAME!!shame!! I am not ashamed and never will be ashamed of were I was born and raised and never will be ashamed of my background or roots. I am not from sw-va but just a few miles from pound va a little town called wheelwriht Ky. but both my parents being from the Appalachia va area.and all my aunts and uncles and cousins. neither side of my family were rich or had great amounts of land. they were simple people but proud people hard working coal miners and loggers but not rich. I now live in middle TN a town called Cookeville. But I am proud to tell people were I am from and were my parents are from. Just remember that the people from the sw-va and Eastern Ky area are the backbone of this great nation of ours . I love this site. but I must admit that the one thing that gets under my skin the most is people putting my part of the country down. that is my home and I will take up for it and my people there at all cost. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Griffith <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, February 18, 1999 3:34 PM Subject: [VAWISE-L] ref white trash >My father was born in Appalachia, Wise County, Va. and told my mother he >was born in Bristol. 2. Brenda wrote about Jenkins Mt., train station museum, Pound Gap, etc. My wife and I are planning to venture into S. WV., SW. VA., and E.Ky in May of this year to reinspect and relive some memories as I was born in Coalwood, WV., McDowell Co. Where, at the time, Coal was King. As it was in Wise Co, Va., and Letcher Co., Ky. I lived in Norton. My mother taught at J.J. Kelly High in Wise. My dad grew up in the Mining Areas of all three states. Became a Supt of Mines in several areas, and a Fed. Mine Safety Engineer ultimately. I recall living in McRoberts, and Burdine (was not incorporated into the Jenkins city limits at the time) and attended grade school in Jenkins. Mother taught in the area as well. My brother and I walked to and from Burdine & Jenkins. He and I use to go up into the hills, where Bee-Hive Rock is located, which had a great view of the surrounding hills. Dad played baseball for the Jenkins Cubs of the old Lonesome Pine League in the 1930's. I remember sitting in the bleachers in Jenkins eating peanuts and drinking Orange Crush, watching my dad and others play ball. He also played ball for the Consol Coal Co. in Coalwood, as well as the Red Robins. Following the games, there would usually be a dance at the Club House or elsewhere. Met Happy Chandler on one of his jaunts, when he was Governor of Ky. I recall the weather back then, and one 48" snow we had. Mr. Stambough lived across the creek, which we crossed via a wooden swinging bridge. He was an engineer on the railroad. We got to inspect one of the engines, when I was 7 yrs old. Use to walk up and down the railroad picking up coal that fell from the cars that passed. We built a tree house on the creek bank in back of our house. We had several Bulldogs at various times. People down the way had two Birddogs; Bird and Hike. Our dog - Duke and the other two always fighting. There was and still is the lake and power house in Jenkins. An elderly man would always go out to test the ice to see if it was safe to skate on the lake. Gatherings at the fire at night then off to skate some more. I remember the theater in the stone building on the corner, where we paid about 15 cents for the ticket including pop-corn served in a celophane connical bag. A barber shop in the basement, where the owner kept a baby alligator. The people who had a candy store in their house just up from the school. Jenkins Hospital which is now a facility for long term care. The Peanut Man who would come around in McRoberts. We use to go over to Norton, where the City swimming pool was located. Was it Bald Knob up on the mountain with look-out & picnic facilities, etc? We will venture to burial sites of Ancestors for perhaps the last time. You see we are talking about events which took place 60 plus years ago. AH, the memories, cherish them. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of in the least. Peace, Tim

    3. I recently copied the Russell County 1860 census record below of my gg grandfather William Johnson. Nathan is my great Grandfather. The only information I have on William and his family, other than my Grandfather Nathan, is that William's daughter Rissey, married *Charles Salyer 24 Jan 1865, his son Major married Elizabeth Salyer 7 nov 1872, and son William Jr married Elvira Massey 4 sep 1873 (all in Russell County). On Rissey¹s marriage record she said that she was born in Ashe County, NC. Noting that all of William¹s children were born in North Carolina and Lucinda being only six years old in 1860, I figured I could go to the 1850 Ashe County census and find William and his family. Not so, they were not there. *Charles Salyer had first married Rebecca J. Vicars shortly before 1860 and was widowed when he married Rissey in 1865. Charles had two children, G. Washington, b. ca 1861 and Nancy C., b ca 1864. They were enumerated with Charles and Rissey in the 1880 census. Also in the 1880 census Charles and Rissey had five children. They were John F., Sarah C., Mary J., Cynthia C., and Benjamin B. I am trying to find anything-anything-anything on any of these Johnsons and any help would be greatly appreciated. 1860 RUSSELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA CENSUS Johnson, William 45 NC Rebecca 44 NC Rissey 21 NC Nathan 18 NC Sarah 16 NC Major 21 NC William 10 NC Lucinda 6 NC

    3. Sorry to post this to list, tried Martha's address to thank her but wouldn't go.. thank you Martha, Thank you for the information.. not sure if it is the same group but will compare it to some of the other info I have.. I am doing this for a relative here in WA. ( NOTE: I believe I listed this Nancy Sturgill's parents as being Francis Sturgill and Rebecca Hash, I believe it would me Rebecca Hall.. which is a few generations later. I too am connected to the Church & Sturgill family but my connection is via Methias Kelly Church and Anna Maggard, John would be brother to Kelly.. and the Nancy Sturgill would be connected to my Sturgill line but several generations ago.. so really am not sure about the info when I see it .. I see your email is Short family, are you connected to Short family around Wise county.. my connection is to my ggg grandmother Melvina Short, daughter of Daniel H. Short(tt) of Wise county. have collected most of that info.. my family is so inter married that I seem to have grandparent ancestors from most all the long standing Wise county and Letcher county families.. Melvina Short above married a Jonathan Hayes(Hays) which I can't find any info on.. they had two daughters.. one being Mary Elizabeth which married Francis Standifer/ Standefer and the other was Martha Hayes who married a Joseph Wiley Adams ? Melvina Short later married George Washington Bolling.. and they had many children together.. so that is a bit about my Short line, My grandmother was a Sturgill, from flat gap.. I only have her brother Percy Vernon Sturgill and his family still living there at Flat Gap.. If you have not seen my web pages and are interested please visit it.. My Mountain Heritage.. http://www.willapabay.org/~semperfi Thanks so much, Ron Black - Washington State. -----Original Message----- From: Martha Short <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, February 11, 1999 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [VAWISE-L] John church and Nancy Sturgill Wise county VA. > >-- > >On Thu, 11 Feb 1999 10:18:40 R. 3. Hi cousins, in Wise county and surrounding areas. Looking for information on John Church ( I believe that is son of Gabriel, and a brother to Mathias Kelly . and his wife Nancy Sturgill, I believe she may have been daughter of Francis Sturgill and Rebecca Hash.. Would like to have their parents confirmed based on what you all might have and would appreciate any "descendant line info" you might have for John Church and Nancy Sturgill Church, their children etc. as I do not have anything in my FTM files currently for them. Thanks and God Bless, take care cousin Ron in WA.

    2. Greetings: I have the newspaper clippings (2) of my grandfathers obit. Which I found tucked away in an old family Bible. They are very fragile and yellowed, there are no headings or date of the paper or clipping, I have searched both sides of the clipping and can not tell. I will type it out for you, it reads: # 1 -Trammel, Va., April 14. - Teamon Bowman, Dickenson County pioneer, and probably the oldest man in Southwest Virginia, died at his home at DeBusk postoffice, on Lick Creek, five miles north of here, at 9 A.M. Thursday, April 8th. Born near Alum Wells, Washington County, in 1822, he was ninety-three years of age at the time of his death. His father, Uriah Bowman, came from North Carolina in the early years of the neneteeth century and settled near Alum Wells, where he readed his family; of this family only one now survives, Mrs. Tryphena Agnor, of Hilton Station. #2 - Trammel Viginia. Mrs Emm Austin, Mrs. Francis Miller, Mrs. Jane Silcox, Mrs. Ellen Silcox and Mr. Charles Bowman were called to DeBusk, on account of the serious illness, and subsequent death of their aged fater, Dr. Teamon Bowman. Dr. Bowman, who was undoubtedly, Dickenson County's oldest citizen, was ninety-three years of age, and settled on the farm where he died, some forty-five years ago. Granville White, Foy McMillian, Jessee McMillaan, O. T. Austin and many others from Trammel attended the burial of Dr. Teamon Bowman, on Bear Ridge, Saturday. (typo errors left in as written) I have FTM 5.0, and have had absolutely no luck with the Bowman line. One family member thinks Teamon's wife was named Mary ?. My grandmother Emmaline Bowman was born April 21, 1881 in Washington Co., Va. d. 11-30-1964. She married Nathan Ballard Austin 12-08-1898 at Nora, Dickenson, Co., Va. I have had much better luck with the Austin line. If anyone has any suggestions, or if we can share info., please let me know. 3. (My information has not been personally researched by me. I have found everything in books or by family legend, and am open to any corrections.) It seems like anyone native to Wise or Dickenson Counties has some Mullins in his background. Mine starts with Revolutionary "Buttin'" John (b. 1750-60) in Burke Co. NC. His second wife was Jane "Jennie" Bailey, by whom all his children were born except the first, possibly, who may have been born by Mollie Brandon. She died of smallpox. John Sr. eventually lived in Clintwood with his son, John Jr. and his wife, Ollie Cox Mullins. My Mullins line comes on down through John Mullins Jr.> dau. Ollie Mullins who married Eli Vanover of Clintwood> Dora Vanover who married Sam Meade> Rena Meade who married Willie Dotson> me, Brenda Salyers. Grandma Dora (b.1875) lived with our family until her death in 1969. ¥Does anyone know when John Sr. came to Clintwood and if Jennie lived there with him? ¥Does anyone know of John Sr.'s parentage and ancestors for sure? Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. Brenda Salyers
