Looking for the parents of John McCurry, born abt. 1857, from Gladesville VA. Had a brother named Lewis McCurry who resided in Johnson County KY. I know nothing about this family prior to them coming to eastern Kentucky. Any help will be appreciated.
I have really enjoyed reading all of your stories. The one who wrote that geneology without stories like these is kind of useless was right. Unfortunatley I am under 50 years old and was raised mainly in Maryland, eastern shore, so I don't know of these things with the exception of Pinto and Navy bean with ham "soup". I do have memories of my mom making it, putting a piece of cornbread in the bottom of a bowl, lots of onions on top. Course, I can't stand cornbread so I used white bread. I'm sure my father would be very disappointed to know his son doesn't like cornbread being from Appalachia in Wise county. And by the way, when he was young I think he was embaressed that he was from Appalachia but as he grew older I don't think it bothered him anymore. I am proud of the fact that he is from there, it's beautiful country. And judging from the people on this list it is populated with some of the best people in this country.

In Sept of last year I visited in SW VA, mostly Grayson co, Va, where allot of my ancestors came from, and I can't say enough GOOD things about all the people we met and interviewed. They were truley WONDERFUL people. I will never ever forget that trip. We attended two different church services while there and the hospitality and warm welcomes was just unbelieveable!!!! I sure can't say enough good things about SW VA. Donna in PA
Shame!!! Shame!!! First of all let me say that I am not nor ever will be ashamed of my roots or the area or part of this country that I am from. I am not from sw-va but just across the line from pound va, a little town called Wheelwright Ky. But my mother and Father are from sw-va wise county scott county lee county. they were not from rich families put hardworking families who had a proud back ground good moral values. they were people that believed that they were no better than any one else and no one was any better that they were. They were not the goodie to shoes that went around with their nose stuck up in the air that if it came a good rain they would drown.. my people were simple people coal miners loggers and farmers, I am not ashamed to tell people were that I am from. or that my family is from. because that part of the county is home to me, and always will be I am not above my raisins. I do not live there any more but now live in tn, a town called Cookeville, I have lived in Mich also but sw-va and south eastern Ky. is home sweet home to me. my family and I attend the Assembly of God Church in Cookeville and I tell my Pastor that I am from God's country. and I truly believe that that is god's county People be thankful that you are from an area of this great nation that our forefathers and families were and are the backbone of this country. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Griffith <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, February 18, 1999 3:35 PM Subject: [VAWISE-L] Griffith/Williams family >Any information on James Sanders Griffith from Wise County, died in >cave-in at Rhoda mine in 1908. > > >==== VAWISE Mailing List ==== >Please post your family lines to the list perodically, so that newcomers know who is on the list. >[email protected] Phyllis Morefield >

Dear Tim, No, it's High Knob above Norton. The lake is still intact at Jenkins, but I'm not sure if there is still a power house. The large old brick building with the tall, round chimney has been torn down and replaced by a charming city park and stage. Vaguely remember the Dipsy Doodle. Do you remember the Steak 'n Shake in Norton? You could not have said it better about SW VA
Hi, I lurk on this list, live in London KY and have to tell about going to Wise VA a couple years ago. To get there we traveled south through the Cumberland Gap tunnel then turned left to go up through Virginia. As we were going through Virginia, in the early morning, the fog hung on the mountain range that was on the left side of the road separating Virginia and Kentucky. It was so beautiful and as usual I had the feeling of being where my forefathers had been and traveled to get to KY. When we got to Wise, a lovely town, found it full of people(we thought there would only be a few) gathering at the college to hear speakers about the Melungeon heritage. People came from everywhere across the country and we all enjoyed each other and the area very much. We can be poor(or rich) and have a great love for family and the areas we are from. People are just different, some could be ashamed of their situation and it not bother others. I personally love Wise County and think it is very rich with heritage and should be proud. Penny in London, KY

NEVER BE ASHAMED OF FAMILY. I have an Aunt that was married to a Napier in Richmond, Va and she was never White trash. Iam proud of her she is gone now her name wasGrace Napier and she has kids that carry the name. Love, Grace
GOOD FOR YOU.
Hi Penny, What a nice tribute! I think almost all of SW Virginia is beautiful, especially from the Powell Valley Overlook outside Norton--any season, any weather, any time of day. Next time you're in our area, drive on over to Pound Gap and down the Kentucky side. The new highway construction on Jenkins Mt. uncovered the most spectacular geology right before your eyes. On down in the town of Jenkins a renovated train station houses a coal/train/history of Jenkins museum. There are white trash and solid gold people wherever one looks, and we generally find whichever kind we are looking for. I've had a query from a lady wanting to know of or correspond with descendants of Dr. Teamon Bowman, son of Uriah Bowman, of Dickenson County. She has no idea of dates, just found an old undated obit that said TEAMON BOWMAN died at DeBusk on Lick Creek of Trammel. Teamon may have had children named Emma Austin, Francis Miller, Jane Silcox, Ellen Silcox and Charles Bowman. Dick. County didn't become a country until 1880, so what county would Trammel have been a part of prior to that? BDS
