Martha, The book is "Burying Grounds of the Pound Area", written by Loretta M. Belcher and Betty M. Belcher. It was published by Belcher Publishing in 1995. It is one of my favorites! I purchased it from: Brenda Salyers at Heritage Nook Books, P. O. Does anyone know where in Wise the Chestnut Grove Cemetary is or if it still exists? Also, how would I go about obtaining records of family members from them? Any inforamtion would be helpful. Thank you, B. Noaks [email protected] Researching: TRIGG, BOGLE, REYNOLDS, NOAKS (NOKES, NOAKES), BELL AND CECIL of SW VA.
Dear Friends: I am trying to find a death date for one of my great-greatgrandfathers, M. Columbus Keith. I believe that he died in Dickenson Co. but is buried at the Pound and his tombstone information is listed in "Burying Grounds of The Pound" (I saw this reference last summer but did not copy down the information and now I am not sure if I have the title exactly right). He was born about 1863 and died after 1916. He was married to Louemma Baker. If anyone has access to this book(s), please check and let me know what information, if any, is listed for him. Thanks, Martha Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com
Angie, I thought the Wise County Library might have this book in their archives, but they don't. They took the information and will search the state-wide system for it. I'll let you know if anything turns up. Brenda Salyers James Salyer wrote: > > Hello, > > My mother-in-law did some research on the BOND family of Scott & Wise > Counties. Hello, My mother-in-law did some research on the BOND family of Scott & Wise Counties. She made a note of information that she obtained about William Wellington BOND from a book she noted as THE HISTORY OF VIRGINIA OF WISE COUNTY ORIGIN, VOL IV, Author was Don Whitehead and the publisher was The American Genealogist, 1924. Does anyone have any information on this book? Or any suggestions as to where she may have found this information? Thank you, Angie [email protected]
Angie, Dolores Robinette here (Jerry's wife). There is a website on AOL that lists rare books. Have you tried the National Genealogists Society website. They have books donated by the members. You never know. I found one on my grandmother's family from an obscure author. Also try listing on the SW_VA-L. There are lots of folks on there with roots in SW VA. How are you all doing? Meant to send Jim an e-mail note but never got around to it with 3 kids under 8. Let me hear from you soon. Dolores
Good day to all list members. This is for all new and expenced researcher. Please check this site out and BEWARE. Dear All, For all of you who had elusive ancestors that left SW Virginia, KY, or West Virginia for Lewis Co. Washington I have just opened up a Listserve page for Lewis County, Washington. Prior to this there has only been one page for the entire State!...VA & KY has spoiled me! To subscribe is similar to all of the listserves, simply enter only the word "subscribe" in the Subject line and send to [email protected] for individual mailings or [email protected] for digest mode!~ Respectfully yours, John Blair
did I talk with you about Williams family? I need to sit down and go through every one of the names and families of all of the 10 children who survived child birth who's names I have. They had a total of 14 kids, a set of twins died at birth and no names for two more. Anyway, I'll sit down today and go through the list and see if there's any matches slan [email protected] wrote: > Williams......... > The Williams I have are from my husbands side and the furthest back I > have right now is Sam Williams who married Sarah ?. Hi Suzanne, Had a few minutes and checked info done by Rodney Veitschegger 1997 for your names. Here is info I found on surnames mentioned in your message below: Elizabeth Mullins b 1854 m William Rasnick. Elizabeth d/o Solomon Mullins and Elizabeth (Hall). Williams......... The Williams I have are from my husbands side and the furthest back I have right now is Sam Williams who married Sarah ?. They had at least the following children as I have a newspaper article that Ethel Williams Herndon put in a newspaper in the Wise County area of VA and one of my sister-in-laws gave it to me as Ethel is the daughter of Isaac Williams. This article showed a picture of Sam and Sarah along with the following children: Julida, Isaac, Sherman, Louise, and Charlie Willaims. Charlie Williams married ? and had Charlie Carl Williams who was born in 1934. That is about all I know about these Williams as it is not my husbands direct line as he is the 8th child and his other siblings had Charlie Carl Williams as a father. Charlie Carl Williams died in an automobile accident in Ohio in 1963 but is buried in VA......... Suzanne
Hello, This is my husbands line so I have very little or at least not as much as I would like....... I do have Bill Rasnick who married Elizabeth Mullen and had at least one child Sarah Rasnick who married Jackson Turner. Sarah and Jackson had several children including Bammy Stella Turner(my husbands grandmother) who was born in 1909 and passed away in 1982 and buried in the McCoy Cemetery in VA. I really don't have much more other than a few on the other siblings of Bammy Stella and her children. Suzanne
thanks Phyllis. I think the LDS started collecting information years ago and most of it was for a religious nature, each church member is urged to activley search for their family background. I know, because of living with the LDS in Salt Lake City (where my grandparents lived for over 50 years). There is some tenant in their teaching about knowing who's your family and their history. I just find it a lot of trouble to go there one day, look something up and having trouble finding it again two minutes later. I don't feel it cracked up to what I expected (which was probably too much on my part) Anyway, anyone with info on Griffith family from Lee and Wise County or mine collapse information in Wise Co., please write. This thing does work, you all saw what occurred last night with Peggy and I, we are "found"! Phyllis Morefield wrote: > Hi Paul and All, > I would like to address the LDS records you mention. Hi Paul and All, I would like to address the LDS records you mention. Records stored by the church are gathered in several ways and I understand that some of these records are in the process of being made available online. The Ancestral File is a compilation of records submitted to the church by anyone wishing to submit them. You do not have to be a member to have your material archived by the church in the Ancestral File. Some people submit their records, knowing that they will be preserved and available(free) to any one doing research. Information on any living members is not published, so you will find 'Living' listed where their info would appear. The International Genealogical Index (IGI) is material, from all over the world, that is collected in various ways including extraction and member submissions. There is a code listed on the microfiche, indicating the type of info in the records: B-birth, M-marriage, N-census, etc. There is also a column titled Batch/Film that can provide a clue as to the source of the info. If there is an M in that code (M703182) it indicates that the record is an extraction made by someone who has seen the original in a courthouse and not just information that a member has submitted. At one time, especially the 1930's, the WPA collected records in an effort to provide jobs/income for people devastated by the depression. This was a project of the federal government, not the church. Many of the cemetery collections were also part of this work. Copies of those records have been preserved in Salt Lake City to be used by anyone doing research. You may not find any of your family records there, and you may also find conflicting info, such as two marriage places. It is important to know where that info came from. In the case of my great grandparents, I found their marriage list as occurring in both KY and OH. I had been unable to locate that record, but since the OH record was an extraction of the original, I was able to locate the original and thus verify their marriage. As with all research, you need to take what you find in any extraction and use it, as a means of helping you, in your own research. Most people are not aware that there is also a card catalog available for the extensive library of the Salt Lake records. You can order copies of these, through your local FHC, and view them at your leisure. I hope this info is useful to some of you on the list. some time back, a couple of weeks I think, someone put out a list of cemeterys in SW Virginia, does anyone still have a copy? Thanks
Thanks Paul, even though the birthdate is wrong in the Mormon database! Thanks again for your help. John Blair

a chara, Sean The only thing I could find was Jacob F Blair born 10/6/1835, Russell, Virginia, father William Blair, mother Frances Compton. I was really disappointed in the LDS resources. I have known a lot of Mormons, even lived in Salt Lake City as did my grandparents for years. I think the data base they have is what THEY have gathered on their little trips around neighborhoods and so forth. They have my grandfather on my mom's side, name date and place of birth but nothing else and it was obtained by an LDS member, my great grandparents WERE NOT Mormons and I know my grandfather didn't cotton to them either. Anyway, let me get down off this soap box.
