    1. [VAWISE-L] Clarks and related families
    2. Bill and Cindy
    3. Hello everyone, I'm part of a group of people, researching Clarks and all their related families. We've constructed 6 webpages giving (Direct Line Descendancy's) of the lines from which some of us descend and/or are researching. It's at http://members.tripod.com/ClarkCousins/ (Note: Many of us are cousins who have found each other online while researching Clarks.) If you're researching a Clark line, please drop by and see if we have any information on your Clark line. You might even be another cousin. If you only have one Clark in your family, you might want to drop by and try to find out if you're related to any of us. Keep in mind these are not complete charts, they contain only the basic direct line descendancy of that Clark researcher. If you feel you may have a connection to any of the lines, please contact us at [email protected] If your Clark line isn't there already, you can contribute your own Clark line for posting, if you like. It might help you find new family info or maybe even meet a cousin you never knew you had. 1. Re: [VAWISE-L] Cooper/1850 Census of Wise County
    2. Wise County was not formed until 1856. You'll need to know where the party lived in relation to the part of Wise County lived in. It was probably Russell County.

    1. [VAWISE-L] STRANGE and PERRY
    2. Cheryl Strange-Laetsch
    3. Good Morning! <or Afternoon!> I haven't posted my Benjamin Ferrell STRANGE query lately, so here goes. I apologize to anyone subscribing to multiple lists and receiving duplicates. I have two different birth dates for Benjamin Ferrell STRANGE (born 1869 or 1872, in Grayson Co., VA), neither of them seem correct if he was the father of Robert Lee STRANGE (born 1878, 1879 or 1887), my grandfather. A thought is that Robert Lee STRANGE was actually born in 1887; his birth year transposed. The 1900 Knott CO census record lists Robert as born in Nov of 1887.... but his parents were married in Nov of 1887. His death certificate lists him born in 1879. His SS-5 lists him born in 1878. Did the census taker write the marriage date instead of the birth year, with regards to the 1887 date? Was Robert really born in 1887? or 1878 as his remaining daughters state? (I'm leaning towards Robert's birth year as 1887) Re Benjamin's wife Sarah PERRY. Her name seems to be very popular for the times, as I have found several women named Sarah PERRY. Does anyone have information to share on this Sarah? Family history has it that the Benjamin Ferrell STRANGE family moved from Wise Co, VA to Knott Co, KY when Robert was about 7 years old. All responses welcome! Would enjoy sharing information with others! Best Regards from Sunny Michigan! Cheryl Strange-Laetsch Descendants of Benjamin Ferrell Strange Generation No. 1 1. 1. [VAWISE-L] Collier Info
    2. Hello all, I am hoping there is someone out there who may be able to help me. I am one of several folks across the country who are trying to solve a family mystery. We are looking for any information to verify the following: Lewis COLLIER, b. ca. 1840 Lee Co. VA, s/o Isaac COLLIER and Cynthia ?, m. Jan. 22, 1860 Valeria COLLIER, b. 1841, d/o Martin Douglas COLLIER and Sarah HORTON. Lewis and Valeria had two children: 1. Darthula COLLIER, b. April 11, 1863 Lee Co. VA 2. Lewis COLLIER, b. March 8, 1865 Lee Co. VA Sometime in 1886 Darthula, m. Elijah John CREECH, b. 1865 Wise Co. VA, s/o Ira CREECH and Ursula Ann ISOM. They moved Wise Co. VA to Wolfe Co. KY shortly thereafter. The mystery is: Darthula apparently brought two children to this marriage from a previous one. The supposed father is a fellow named WILSON, probably Woodrow WILSON. The girls are named: 1. Alice, b. 1884 Wise Co. VA 2. Magie Margaret, b. April 25, 1886 Wise Co. VA What we would really like to find out does anyone know of this information, or can anyone look up 1880's Wise Co. marriage and/or birth records to confirm that Darthula married a WILSON and they had these 2 children. Actually any information about this situation would be greatly appreciated. This has stumped us for years. We knew the girls were not really the daughters of E.J. CREECH, but didn't know who their father might be, we then got this WILSON lead. Hopefully someone out there can shed some light on it, or maybe steer me in the right direction. 3. Hi Martha, Good explanation of Osborn's Gap. John Wes Swindall was my gggrandfather also, as well as Eli Vanover(ggrandfather). They and their families went through Osborn Gap to Kentucky for the duration of the Civil War after the Battle of Crane's Nest. Is there any info or legends in your family about how they survived or who they lived with in Kentucky? Would you or any of the family have a picture of Martha Swindall, John's daughter? Do you know where this would be at today? Hi Louise: The Osborns Gap area is located in the northwest corner of Dickenson Co., VA near the Wise-Dickenson Co. border. It is accessible via Rt. 630 and is about 10 miles or so from the Town of Clintwood. The Gap itself is a notch in Cumberland Mountain which became a trade route between Dickenson Co. and Pike Co. In the early days of the county, there was much traffic between the two states and the Osborns Gap community was a bustling place. In the late 19th and early 20th century it was home to the Swindalls, Phipps, Lipps, Vanover, Keens, Cox, and France families to name a few. The stories handed down in my family state that it was named after Jerry Osborn, an early settler in the area. The first Osborns Gap school was built around 1880. Frank Monroe Beverly was the first teacher. Other teachers were: Kilgore Colley, M. P. Mead, W. B. Trivett, W. N. Meade, Eura Grizzle, Lou Damron. The second Osborns Gap school was built around 1908 and continued until 1920 and from 1924 until it was discontinued in the 1940's. My grandfather and his siblings and many of their cousins attended the second Osborns Gap school. The third Osborns Gap school was built in 1950 and was in service until 1962 when it was discontinued for good. My family still owns a portion of what was the original homestead of my great-great-greatgrandfather John Wesley Swindall in Osborns Gap. Hope this helps answer your question of where Osborns Gap is located and also gives you a feel for the community. Martha Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com
