Pam, there is the new Great Western in Wise, Va. You can make reservations via the internet by contacting their web site at www.GreatWestern.com. We did just that when we planned our trip to Wise back in May. They are next door to a Shonney's, and there is a Mall across the road where there are several good restaurants. Have a good trip. Tim
Pam, There is a Best Western at the KMart intersection into Wise...just off 23. There are three motels at the interchange between 23 and 58A in Norton. a Super 8, a Holiday Inn, and a third one that I have forgotten the name of...something Hearth Inn. This one and the Best Western has just opened. There are several others but these are the ones readily assessable. Hi, Recently I made a query about where or if there was a site on line about orphans. I would like to thank everyone who wrote with information on this subject. I ran across the information on the bottom of this page and thought it might be helpful to somebody. From 1854 to 1929 the government ran what was known as "orphan Trains" they sent homeless children mostly from the New York area on trains to the West. The trains had pre determine stops where the local people would come out and "look" them over. Those that weren't chosen went on to the next stop, those that were chosen stayed where some found a much better life with people that loved them while others found a life close to slavery. This is an incredible and amazing part of US history that I have never heard of before. I hope this helps somebody, Ed Cooper Nonfiction Books Fry, Annette R. The Orphan Trains. Hi John, Where did you find the on-line will?? Thomas Hollingsworth and Susanna Mayse are my ancestors through their daughter, Phoebe that married Simeon Dotson. For anyone researching the Wise Co Hamilton line. I recently found a on-line copy of a will for Henry Mayze of Henry Co Va. This will established the parents of Susanna Mayse (wife to Thomas Hollingsworth). Various deed records for Henry Mayze trace his path from Brunswick, Mecklenburg,Pittsyslvannia,Henry counties. I had been collecting data on Mayze familmies in and around Amherst Co that were related to Hamilton family in that area since this is the possile origin of the Wise Co Hamiltons ( from Schuyler/James Hamilton of 1810). However, this new data shows that the Mayze/Hollingsworth line arrived in SWVa independent of the migration of the Hamilton group. John Hamilton
