Debi- Thanks for the info, but what is WMQ? What is JSTOR? Are these just sites or something more complex? I'm such a novice...these new initials scare me! I'll try the site you mention tho & I appreciate the reference... Cyndi Baltimore
Could you please do a lookup in your Westmoreland book for me? My ancestors are Joshua Hudson b. 1652, possibly the son of John, and Elizabeth Rush b. 1659, daughter of William Rush and Anne Gray. Anne Gray is the daughter of Francis Gray and Alice Moorman. Thanks so much! Anne Hudson Bays

Dawn, I was wondering if you could give me some more info the "Westmoreland Co. published history" book that you have. Is that the exact title and who is the author or editor? An ISBN no. or a Library of Congress Catalog no. would also be helpful. One of the reason I ask is I have a book titled, Westmoreland County Virginia 1653-1983, that was edited by Walter Biscoe Norris Jr., Copyright 1983. The Library of Congress Catalog no. is 83-050915. It has a lot of general information about Westmoreland Co. For those interested, about 1/4 of the book deals with military history for Westmoreland Co. The military history includes chapters with compilation of names of Westmorelanders who served in the War for Independence, the War of 1812, the Civil War. Also included are appendices for various public officials of Westmoreland at various times. FWIW: There is a newer edition of this book that's been published (1989 I believe.) The Colonial Beach Branch of The Central Rappahannock Regional Library has a reference copy of the older edition (Reference 975.523 WE). -- William G. Thompson
I have been attempting to obtain a copy of this history myself. Would it be possible for you to see if the book has any references to Wigley, particularly John, Job or Alan in late 18th century. Any help would be appreciated. Clyde At 08:09 PM 9/1/98 -0400, you wrote: >Willing to do lookup as time permits. I have Westmoreland Co. published >history here on my bookshelf. Hi Again: First let me say that I apologize if I mislead anyone about William Rush. I guess it is William Rust and I goofed! Anyhow, to search the demo for WMQ go to http://www.jstor.org/ . I have found many items pertaining to my VA families that have helped me with my research. You still need to follow the leads, but some are great leads. BTW, anyone have any information about Nathaniel Jones and his wife Judith? Owned property on the Madicok (sp) River in mid 1600's and was a justice for Westmoreland County during that period. Thanks & good luck! JSTOR?WQsomething? Help! What are these?
Debi, I give up! What is the JSTOR demonstration search? If it has the WMQ online, boy, will that be helpful!!! thanks, greg
Aha! Thank you! I was confused about that myself... Cyndi Baltimore
HI, Does your book have a David and Sara McGowan? Thanks much. Linda
Thank you Virginia--will check these out! Cyndi Baltimore P.S. For some reason I got both of your posts twice--don't know why...
Dear Cyndi, I think you've just found a "cousin"! Your families are my families. Some of my dates are slightly different, but I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same people. I also have a 3-vol. set of Cavaliers and Pioneers, abstracts of VA Land Patents and Grants. Wm. Medcalfe is listed in several pages of vol. 1 which covers 1623-66. He definitely owned land in the 1650's. Give me a couple of days to get some stuff together for you. I can send as attachments to e-mail or by snail mail, whichever you prefer. Hi! I found this at the JSTOR demonstration search. Seems that William Rust married into the Francis Gray family. Hope this helps. WMQ, Vol. 12, No. 4, P. 268 Owing to the disturbances in Maryland occasioned by William Clayborne and the differences between Catholics and Protestants, several settlements were formed about 1638 on the south bank of the Potomac, at Machodoc and Chicacoan, under the government of Virginia. Francis Gray took an active part in these troubles against Lord Baltimore, and finally found it more agreeabel to settle in Virginia. He sold his cattle in Maryland in 1647, and removing to Machodoc, Westmoreland County, Va., died there in 1667. His will is on record in Westmoreland County, and was dated 7 June 1667, and proved July 31, 1667. It names wife Alice, son Francis, daugher Rust, wife of William Rust; and mentions Ann Launcelot, daughter of John Launcelot. Witnesses John Ashton, Mary Garner. Take care! Thanks, Arlene! Which line are you from? Who's your link? Would love to see your data on any of these families! I have some Rust descendants of William (my dad wrote a book on descendants of Hannah Rust Boggess and Thomas Watts if you happen to be of that line), I have Magdalene Damourvell's father Samuel, and nothing more than what I gave on the Metcalf/Medcalves. Do you know if Ann was a second wife of Willim Rust? Or anything about Francis Gray? Someone responded saying Frances Gray is father to William's wife which I guess means 2 marriages for him...Please send me more! I forwarded your info to my dad (who has done all our research to date). He is Fred Rutledge at pathosalso@aol.com. He's a little overwhelmed with on-line stuff still, but I'm sure he's interested. I'll share anything you send with him, and if we have questions for him I'll see what I can do... Once again, thanks! Let me know if you want my Rust descendants... Cyndi Rutledge Baltimore
This is MY William Rust? Born 1624 Suffolk Co?Eng,m. bef 1662 to Ann Metcalf and d. 1699? Westmoreland Co, VA? If so, thank you! Do you have any more on these folks? Anything on Ann? Or when and how William arrived here? What sources do you have for this period/era and are they readily available? Would love more!!! thanks again! Cyndi Rutledge Baltimore
I do not believe that William Rush and William Rust were one and the same! It was William Rush who married the daughter of Francis Gray, not William Rust.

There are a number of websites with information on these families. I found them by going to: http://www.familytreemaker.com then hitting "Internet Family Finder" in the left column, and on the new screen, "Try Internet Family Finder Now" on the right screen. The sites by Ruby Simonson McNeill (with a huge research paper on Spence and quite a bit on Samuel Damourvell) and J.H. Garner are probably the largest, but there are several others. If anyone wants Coxes (Charnock, Vincent, etc.), I can forward a rtf file. It is believed by several researchers that the wife of Samuel Damourvell was a Hannah Cox, who was first married to George Lamkin. It's provable that Hannah ?? first married George Lamkin: I am not positive that she was a Cox. Virginia DeMarce
