Hi I'm looking for any information that can be found on the RIGGS & the BYRD surnames. Thanks so much for all your time and effort. I believe my 5th, 6th and 7th Great Grandfather's were born in that county. I'm trying to prove that this is the correct line. I know that Abraham is my 5th great grandfather, but need more proof to prove his ancestors. Also looking for any information on his marriage. I have that he married an Elizabeth BYRD. Abraham RIGGS: 1757 (fought in the Revolutionary War) Robert RIGGS: 1728 John RIGGS: 1687 Thanks again for any help that you can give Barbara Tourtillott mtelect@foothill.net
Thank you. The Jones name I only have Benjamin and perhaps Vinney or Vincent. Mullen was the last name. Thank you again, Eleanor

Hi Dawn, Thank you so much for taking your time to do the lookup for me! I really do appreciate your help. Anne Hudson Bays
Margaret Perry Fields - Perry (William, Widd, Robert, Edw., Jane) from pg. 128 The Colonial Church, a court order dated July 27, 1715 "William Perry being bound by Recognizance to appear at this court to answer for his misbehavior in Cople Parish Church at Nominy and being called appeared and alleadged that he had acted nothing for which he ought to be accused... and thereupon they doe acquitt him from the Recognizance aforesaid." from pg. 99 a Robert Perry witnessed a marriage on June 2, 1639 between Restitute Tew and John Hallowes. The Hallowes home was located in St. Mary's County, Maryland at a place called St. Michael's Hundred but the book didn't make it clear if the wedding was held at this place. then from pgs. 8 & 9 "First Northumberland Index 1648? - 1652" abstract only, "Perry, Jane", "Perry, Widd", "Perry, Edw." Lastly, the Robert Sanford mentions appear to be too late to be yours, 1850's, Civil War and 1911 church steeple builder. Mari - Gray (Agnes, ffrancis, Scotland, Susan, Virginia R., Gray's Corner) any ring a bell? Arlene - Crab and Crabb and Crabbe listings - Osmun Crab only Crab, lots of others. Can you be more specific with first names. May take you up on offer of lookups on your end. I am swamped just now trying to answer these lookups but when I get a breather, I'll be in touch about it. Anne Hudson Bays - No Joshua or John Hudson...the J. Hudson appears to be a current day historian but there is also mention of a place? J.W. Barroom? A Dr. Benjamin Rush on pg. 189 brought "absurd" charges against a Lee. A Jer. Rush on pg. 617 was one of 115 patriots to sign a resolution that was drafted by Richard Henry Lee on 27 Feb. 1766. A ffrancis Gray on pg. 8 listed on First Northumberland Index (abstract) 1648? - 1652, also listed as one of "vestrymen" for Appomattox Parish 3d of July 1661. No Moorman listed. Hope this is of help. Westmoreland County Virginia 1653-1983 Edited by Walter Biscoe Norris, Jr. copyright 1983 available from Westmoreland County
Anne Bradshaw Musser - John Bradshaw pg. 11 "Northumberland Oath of Loyalty to the Commonwealth 1652" "Wee whose names are subscribed doe promise and ingage our selves to be true and faithful to the Common Wealth of England as it is now established without King or house of Lordes" "Fourth Column" "John Bradshawe" - Anne, it does not appear that John signed with a mark. Hinson index entries include (Augustine P, Austin, George W., James, Jno.C., Robert H., Rodham N., Thomas P. William S., Hinson's Plantation and Hinsons - all 1 page entries) Any sound familiar? pg. 684 Wicklieff, Davis on The Poll List For The Election of Burgesses For Westmoreland, 1755 "A Poll taken for Colo. Mullins (Spencer, Bottom, Edward, Peter and William) any of these sound familiar? Dickerson (Deanner Johnson, R.A., J.R.) also Dicksons. How about any of these? Linda - Bowin (James B. Adolphus, Carry, Rev. Williard Sr.,) Marshall (Chief Justice John, George W., Gilbert, Mrs. P., Robert Alexander, Robert P., Thomas, William) also a Marshall Creek. Any sound familiar? Sarah - William Wright pgs. 365 & 484 (no Peter Wright) from the War of 1812 on pg. 365 "William Wright, Lieutenant" (also "Richard Wright, Lieutenant" right under William) on roster for "Captain William Middleton's Co. in service July 15-26, Aug. 3-5, Oct.30-Nov.17, 1813, July 18-Sept. 25, 1814" on pg. 484 William Wright (and family) first to worship at Ebenezer Church (Methodist). Don't know if there is a connection to your William. First names got passed down often to first sons and such. Debi - No Judith Jones but Nathaniel Jones listed as "Westmoreland Justice" in 1660 on pg. 35, a Nathaniell Jones listed as one of "vestrymen of this parish...3d of July 1661" for Appomattox Parish on pg. 124 and most interesting, Nathaniell Jones in a will dated 30 July 1662, recorded 20 August 1662 (excerpt only in book) "I Nathaniell Jones of ye upper Muchotick in ye County of Westmoreland planter... doe give and bequeath one thousand pounds of tobco towards ye building of a church here in this parrish of Upper Muttchotick. Hello, would you mind privately emailing me Dawn's email address for a lookup. Thanks Eleanor
Dear Dawn: Thanks for all your help! I am seeking information about Nathaniel and Judith Jones - had property on the Maticock in Westmoreland in mid 1600's. Nathaniel was also a justice in the county. Thanks again, and take care! Debi To search the archives click below: http://newsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
Thanks so much for looking. Could you list the name of your book again in a future post? These do 'ring a bell'. Pierce is supposed to be connected to this family.
Hi Dawn; The Petition Against Established Religion in1785 mentions all the names in my direct line:Presley Sanford, John Sanford, Thomas Sanford and Richard Sanford. There were several Johns, Thomas and Richards at that time but only two Presleys (one son of Youell the other is mine-the son of Richard) are there any more details about any of these Sanford ancestors? Thank you, Hilary Westin

Steve & Regina Roper... maybe the jackpot for you, lots of miscellaneous entries on many people who could be your people... would like to e-mail an attachment with summary of entries to you direct if it's okay (lots of typing on my end) Barbara... "Westmoreland County Virginia 1653-1983" Edited by Walter Biscoe Norris, Jr. 1983 available for about $43.00 from Westmoreland Co. William Thompson, I believe you do have the same book. Cyndi Rutledge... pg. 11 "Wm. Linda... sorry, no McGowens in index Clyde... only Wigley listed in index for an entry on page 145 "James Wigley" on "2nd of November 1785 Westmoreland County Petition Against Established Religion" with many, many other names who signed it also. Hi Dawn, Are there by chance any PERRY's in the book you have so kindly offered to do Look-ups in???? Am searching for an early PERRY Line in VA ca. 1668 - my GGrandfather, PERRY, William - born in Westmoreland Co, VA ca. 1668 - Wife: ____________, Ann. Their son - PERRY, John - born Westmoreland Co, VA - his Wife: SANFORD, Susannah. Her parent's: SANFORD, Robert & ________, Susannah. This Line went from VA into KY, to IN, IA, and finally to California where I now live. I have looked for this line forever - if there is anything you can help me with, I'd be so greatful. Thanks for letting me visit with you, thanks in advance for any help you can be. Take Care. Margaret (Marge) PERRY-Fields >From an old VA & KY Family MFIELDS155@AOL.COM
Looked in index... sorry no Pierce Sanford... no Elizabeth Sampson BUT found Elisabeth Sanford on page 146 in a list of many individuals on "2nd of November 1785 Westmoreland County Petition Against Established Religion" along with Presley Sanford, John Sanford, Thomas Sanford, Richard Sanford, Thos.Randall Sanford and many other surnames. Any of these ring a bell... brothers, uncles or something of Pierce possibly? The book includes the petition and the long list of names. Any other names you want to try? Happy to help... figure others would do the same if possible.
In a message dated 98-09-03 20:18:58 EDT, you write: << Thanks for the info, but what is WMQ? What is JSTOR? Are these just sites or something more complex? >> WMQ is the William and Mary Quarterly -- a magazine dearly loved by all historians of colonial America. It has been running for nearly a century, and comes in Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 rather than having all the volumes numbered consecutively. http://www.jstor.com is not primarily a genealogical site. Rather, it is a service to which academic researchers (mostly) subscribe because they have the back issues of a lot of journals online and searchable as a database. As a demo (to coax people to subscribe) they let you search three journals through the year 1921. One of those journals happens to be the WMQ, bless their hearts, so you can get into their demo and search those years for free. If you ever meet VMHB, that's the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. Virginia
