    1. Re: [VAWESTMO-L] Jane ASHTON - Early 18th Century - Westmoreland, VA
    2. DONALD KING
    3. Patije, My interest in the ASHTON is really a byproduct of my interest in the KING and SMITH lines. So far, I have not seen any McCLANAHANs. But, perhaps that is a branch of the KINGs and SMITHs that I have not researched yet. I would be interested in hearing more. This is the second time tonight that I have seen the question per the parentage of Jane ASHTON - makes me nervous :>). First - I am not sure which Jane ASHTON you are talking about. I have two - one by marriage. Per my records - Jane SMITH daughter of Wm and Mary SMITH married Charles ASHTON. They had 2 daughters - Jane and Sarah (per the will of their g/f Wm SMITH in 1707). It APPEARS that Jane (wife of Charles) probably died before 1707 as she was not mentioned in the will of her father Wm SMITH. An interesting sidenote - Ann SMITH, the second wife and widow of Wm SMITH prepared a Deed of Gift in 1708 to Wm DANKS - HER son by her first marriage. This Deed of Gift was witnessed by Mary KING and "Mark" Jane Ashton. I have seen Jane ASHTON's name in a few documents, but this is the only place where I have seen her name prefaced with "Mark" and it DOES NOT appear to be trying to say "her mark". Has anybodyelse seen her name presented in this manner? I am interested in hearing more. 3. Don, I found it. >From the 2 volume set of books named FORSYTHE, LOWRY, RUST, EVANS, AND RELATED FAMILIES, COX, LAMKIN, RUCKER and WESTMORELAND, by Leona Lentz Weaver, 1889. All of these families are related. I am related to the Forsythe, Rust, Cox, Lamkin, and Rucker lines. George Lamkin, Jr married ca 1709 Jane Ashton. Issue: All Lamkins, Peter, George III, Eleanor, Samuel, Charles b 1718, and Ashton Lamkin b 1720 George Lamkin's will dated 1728, pro. 1727 Westmoreland Co. VA names wife Jean (Jane) sons, Peter and George, dau Eleanor; wife and bro James Exrs. Jane Ashton Lamkin married secondly Richard Partridge. Issue: Matthew Partridge Richard Partridge's will dated 4 Apr 1750 pro. 29 May 1750 Westmoreland Co., VA names wife Jean(Jane), her sons Charles and Ashton Lamkin and son Matthew Partridge. Jane Partridge's will dated 18 Sep 1760, pro. 31 Mar 1761, Westmoreland Co., VA names sons Charles and Ashton Lamkin, dau Eleanor Cox, grdau Sarah Rust, grson Daniel Lamkin. Son, Samuel Lamkin, was not named in the above wills, but his son Daniel was named. Samuel named his bros. Charles and Ashton Lamkin in his will, 1751. Jane Ashton's parentage is not known. There is circumstantial evidence that she may be the granddaughter of William Smith. His will dated 10 Oct 1707 pro. 26 Nov 1707 Westmoreland Co., VA names granddaughters Jane Ashton and Sarah Ashton. He also named dau Mary King and grandson Smith King. On 28 Aug 1678 he had bound his dau Mary to Vioncent Cox, (Sr). At that time Vincent Cox also had a captured servant, named William King. It is quite possible that Mary Smith married William King. All I know about this is from this book. You will have to take it for what it is worth along with your research. Dan Devault PS. Some of these Ashtons married into the George Washington family.

    1. [VAWESTMO-L] Bullard
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Reuben Bullard appears on record in Westmoreland Co as assisting in furnishing food for the army during the Revolution. In 1776 he was on a jury, trying several persons for treason, and allowed to keep an ordinary "for the space of 1 year" in 1779.He offered a "good iron chest" for sale in 1781,and is listed as living in Leedstown. By 1787 he was living in Fredericksburg, where he married Fannie Davis, and died in 1787. They had several children, and I know much of his descendants, but can find no Bullards before Reuben. Is anyone researching Bullards in Westmorland county, or does anyone recognize my Reuben? He was married , before Fannie, to another (could her name be Woolfolk?), and had a daughter named Lucinda by his first wife. Does anyone sound famililar? Sandra

    2. William G. Thompson
    3. While browsing through a book on Westmoreland County, Virginia (1983 ed.), I came across a write up (p. 450) about Post Revolutionary Churches, Oak Grove Baptist 1875. It states that, "C.C. Thompson was elected as the first clerk of the church on Oct. 16 of the same year (1875). Until 1975, the office of clerk was held by a descendant of the Thompson family, with the exception of W. R. Pomeroy, who married into the family. Clerks following Mr. Thompson were G.V. Thompson, W. R. Pomeroy, ..." Does anyone any information (e.g. the given name) of C.C. Thompson, G.V. Thompson, and W. R. Pomeroy might have been? I have a great aunt that married a Wilbur Pomeroy. Any idea who the descendants of these Oak Grove Baptist clerks might have been? -- William G. 1. [VAWESTMO-L] George and Isabella KEMPER, ca1800-1831, VA
    2. Hello everyone, I am looking for the ancestors and descendants of Isabella KEMPER (ca1805-?) who married Francis STONE (ca1800-?) on 11 Jan 1820. Francis was the son of William STONE (ca1763-1831) and Margaret (Peggy) MORRISS (ca1778-1823) of Westmoreland Co., VA. The only clues I have are as follows: George KEMPER acted as bondsman on record for the third marriage of William STONE (above) to Mary (PAYNE) MORRISS on 2 Jan 1823, Fauquier Co., VA; also, George T. KEMPER signed the will of William STONE (above) as a witness, on 14 May 1831, Fauquier Co., VA. The listing of George on these records could be coincidental or they could demonstrate a family link to Isabella. William STONE's will states "I give to my son Francis and his heirsÂ…" which leaves open the possibility of descendants. Any information on these KEMPERs would be greatly appreciated. I have extensive information on the MORRISSes and STONEs and would be happy to share. Best regards, Brian Douglas Conley BriDConley@aol.com
