Katie, Bill & Freda: Thank you for the marriage lookup. I am going to rule out James Johnston m. Rachel Hazlerigg 20 Apr 1826. The names match but J. Campbell and Rachel Johnston's first child was born ca. 1839, their last child was born 1870. Even if Rachel was married at 14 years of age she would be at least 58 years old in 1870. John C. Johnson m. Ann Glenn 28 Aug 1834 is a possibility. We all know that names on census change quite often. At least the middle initial is right for Campbell. If this is the right marriage, then Ann (Rachel?) would be at least 50 years old when she had her 15th child in 1870. Our ancestors were really amazing! I guess the next question is, Is there a John Johnson in the 1840 Washington Co. census? My J. Campbell Johnston and Rachel are in Smyth Co. by 1840. I did discover this morning that Smyth Co. was formed from Wythe and Washington Cos. in 1832 so it would not necessarily mean they moved. Corinne
