D. E. BROWN's book, "The Marriages of Washington Co., VA, 1781 - 1853" (1993), covers the time frame when parents were not listed in the WC Marriage Registers (except in rare instances). Brown did include the parents if he found any. He found only two entries with parents (see pages 8 and 46): (1) __ __ 1849, John BLANKENBECKLER & Elizabeth EDMONDSON, Daughter of Andrew E. & Patsy EDMONDSON. Married by Andrew PATTERSON. (2) 18 Oct 1814, Solomon OSBORN (single, birth: WC VA, white, residence WC VA, parents: James OSBORN, occupation: farmer) and Retty LIVINGSTON (age 20, single, birth: WC VA, residence WC VA, parents: Peter & Elizabeth LIVINGSTON). Married by James FOLLEY. - - - - - - - - - - Thomas COLLEY's book, "Washington County Marriages 1853-1880," (1997), contains marriages starting in 1853 -- but 1854 seems to have been when the parents had begun to be listed in the WC Marriage Registers (as well as age; if single, widow, widower, divorced; where born; where resided; grooms occupation; and married by). COLLEY has included all the above info in his book. BROWN writes there were no marriages found prior to 1781 (even though WC was formed in 1776) and very few marriages before 1785. There are no original marriage licenses prior to 1844. Also, there are no marriage bonds or banns. Any of those which existed apparently were burned in the fire of 1864. Bob Ford
