I'm still looking for information on Joel B. Adams, b. Abt 1810 in VA - d. Aft 1880 in KY. My great-grand uncle, Bill, who would have been Joel Adams' grandson, always told us his grandfather came from Wise, Virginia. He claimed that Joel was married to a Native American girl, but she went back to her family. Joel then left Virginia for Kentucky, where he married Anne Davis and had 3 more children; James Henry, Nancy, and Amanda. Joel Adams and Anne Davis can be found in the 1870, and 1880 census living in Johnson County, KY. All three children are listed in the 1880 census with them. Now here's where it gets interesting. Try to keep up. From a reply to an earlier post, I'm confident Joel B. Adams was born in Washington County, Va., between 1801 and 1810. There he was married to Jane F. (possibly Galliher) and had three daughters; Mary B., Elizabeth Catherine, and Martha J.L. Adams (who died in her teens). Mary B. Adams married Isaac Fitzpatrick and was living in Johnson County, KY. In the 1860 census, Joel B. and Elizabeth Catherine are listed as living in Isaac and Mary's household. Elizabeth Catherine married Thomas Leek and had one son, Thomas (Joel Shelton) Leek. However, Thomas Leek was killed in a mining accident shortly after the birth of their son. Elizabeth later married Samuel K. Rice in Johnson County and had more children. I'm also confident Joel had a brother John Q. who left for Johnson County, KY before him. In the 1860 census John was living in Johnson County with his wife Sarah Evans. John Q. apparently came to KY between 1855 - 1856. In the 1880 Johnson County census, Joel B. and John Q. can be found living in adjacent households (Barnetts Creek Precinct, House Nos 143 and 144 respectively). John also had a son named James H. which leads me to believe an older male in the family (possibly father) was named James or Henry or both. Both men also had daughters named Nancy. An added note... Thomas (Joel Shelton) Leek can be found living in the home of John Q. in 1880. He is 13 and listed as John's nephew. Now that my long-winded spiel is over. I'd like to find Joel's parents. Joel says in the census that his father was from VA and his mother from NC. John says his parents were both from NC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Email me at chuckadams01@yahoo.com
