I am researching my Mays/Mayes ancestors of Washington Co., VA and need more information on the children of my great great grandfather, Champion Mays. He was born about 1777 in Virginia, most likely in the Pittsylvania Co., VA area. He died 1861-1870 in Washington Co., VA. On the 1860 Federal Census he is in the household of his son, Fleming Mays, in Washington Co., VA. I believe Champion probably had two wives, his second being Nancy Bateman, born about 1787-1798 in either Virginia or North Carolina; d. Feb. 1860 in Washington Co., VA. Champion's children were: 1. Male Child b. 1810-1820; possibly Larkin Mays 2. Amelia "Milly" Mays, b. 1810-1815; died before 1850; married Robert Melton; he is shown on the 1850 Federal Census, Washington Co., two houses from Fleming Mays and may have remarried. The name is often spelled Melon or Meton. 3 Fleming Mays, b. 1 August 1814 in Rockingham Co., NC; died 1893-1897 Washington Co, VA (my great grandfather through his second wife). He married Mary Wilson, Deborah Denton and Mary Elizabeth Blevins. 4. Mary Ann "Polly" Mays, b. 1818 in VA; d. before Jan. 1864 in Washington Co., VA; married Joel Hilliard. 5. Female Child, b. 1820-1825 6. Thomas Mays, b. 1823-1826 in North Carolina; md. Rebecca Estep; gone from Washington Co., VA by 1870, possibly died by then. 7. James Mays, 1825-1830; shown in Wyeth Co., VA records of 1833 as son of Champion May(sic). 8. Joseph Mays, b. about 1830, VA, d. 7 Nov. 1861 Staunton, Va; married Amanda Denton; served in the Civil War, CSA. If anybody has information on these people, please contact me. I am particularly interested in the descendants of Amelia and Mary Ann. Thanks. Ruby Coleman rcoleman@inebraska.com
