    3. Hi Gary, Yes, divorce records do exist but are hard to find. I ran across a divorce record quite by accident some years ago while at the Washington Co. courthouse looking through Chancery Court records for around 1867. The interesting thing at the time was that we didn't even know our James A Bailey had been married a second time or that he had another child. The record made reference to Georgiana F Bailey suing in order to "maintain herself and the child." In the deed books, for several years later (1899) I came across a property deed where GF Bailey sold property that originally belonged to JA Bailey and it said something like she "acquired it by suit." Looking further, in the Chancery Court records, I found that the suit had been moved to Wythe Co and to the Supreme Court there. After a number of years, I finally hired a person recommended by the Wythe Co His. Soc to search for the divorce record. She provided me with copies - all 111 pages. It cost me some but the papers proved to be a gold mine of information about this family including testimony given by his adult children as well as the father of GF Bailey. This divorce did not get finalized until 1872. The person I hired also told me that a woman named Kegley had compiled records of divorce in Wythe Co and written a book with pertinent information about each case. I believe it is still available to purchase. I am not sure why the divorce case was moved to Wythe Co. Maybe all of them were moved there and handled through this other court. Someone else on the list might be able to provide that answer. If I were you I would start by looking through the index for Chancery Court cases and follow up on everything where either of your names are listed. Then check the deed books to see if any property was deeded to her or possibly to her father as a settlement.
