I'm sure that there was a Kinderhook in Washington County since my Leonard ancestors show up on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses in Kinderhook, Washington county, VA. This page - http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/wash32a.htm - discusses the creation of a "Kinderhook magisterial district" prior to 1860 and includes data from the Kinderhook district as late as 1930. However, when I looked Kinderhook, VA up on MapQuest, I also came up with something not in Washington County and it probably was in Madison or Greene county, as Alice suggests. Perhaps "Kinderhook" never designated a town in Washington County, rather only a district and this districting system is no longer in use? As I mentioned before, I have found references to the "Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department" (see for example, this Bristol Herald Courier obituary for Clarence Wilmer Kilby: http://www.bristolnews.com/obits/MGB44039MJC.html) and Goodson is also a district to which the ~newriver page (listed above) makes reference. This site has an 1820 map of Washington County - http://image.vtls.com/cgi-sid/local_image.cgi?ox=0&oy=0&filename=/BPW/maps/7 11-36.sid&referer=http://image.vtls.com/BPW/indexes/711-712.html&title=++WOO D-BOYE+COUNTY+MAPS+AND+CHART&res=3&size=12&part=1&fullwidth=5155&fullheight= 2948&header=&parts=0 (be careful to get all of that) - it is number 36 on this page: http://image.vtls.com/BPW/indexes/711-712.html (which is a more manageable link) - but I didn't find Kinderhook on it. I didn't look as carefully as I could have, but it is also possible that 1820 is too early for Kinderhook to appear on the map. This site has an 1895 map of Washington County - http://www.livgenmi.com/washingtonVA.htm - but I found no Kinderhook or Goodson on it. Another possibility is that Kinderhook district was originally in Washington County but - after the movement of county boundaries over time - it is now in Greene or Madison county, but a (very) quick perusal of county locations seems to suggest that they are not in the right location for this. To Those Interested: The Kinderhook District used to be a voting district which joined the Bristol, Va. city limits and extended about half way to Abingdon, Va. up Lee Higway.. It later became the Goodson District and is now the Wilson district.. To locate it better, it is divided from the Harrison district by state Rd. 614 and 633. It takes in Wyndale and Wallace, two small villages along the railroad between Bristol and Abingdon.. I hop this helps locate it for you.. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
