    2. Joseph HAYS & Jenny COLVILL's 01 Jun 1797 marriage record is from "The Marriages of Washington Co., VA, 1781-1853" (1993), by D.E. BROWN, page 27. They were married by Rev. Charles CUMMINGS, a Presbyterian minister that served both Sinking Spring (in Abingdon) and Ebbing Spring (near the Middle Fork of the Holston River) congregations in Washington County. On 29 Oct 1796, David CRAIG & Martha his wife of the county of Northumberland, PA sold to Joseph HAYS of Washington County, VA, for $65.50 -- three lots (#'s 12, 13 & 21) near the town of Abingdon containing one quarter acre each. On 17 Apr 1797, Joseph HAYS sold unto Wm. KING of Washington County, Virginia "one negro boy named George" for $300.00. Recorded 02 May 1797. WC DB A:132. On 30 Sep 1797, Joseph HAYS & Jenny his wife of the Town of Abingdon sold to John GOLD, for $28.00 -- lot # 13 (one quarter acre) near the Town of Abingdon. Witnesses: Wm. GREENAWAY & David HAYS. David HAYS of the County of Washington & State of Virginia my true and lawful Attorney ... whereof I have set my hand and seal ... Witness: C. WATKINS. Recorded: At a District Court continued and held at Washington Courthouse the 6th October 1800." WC DB A:518.
