James was born June 24, 1808 in Tennessee, and died Oct/Nov 11, 1886, in Travis County Texas. James was the first member of the Cawlfield family to settle in Travis County Texas. He was the eigth child of william Cawlfield who was born in Ireland Circa 1760-1770. James moved to Greene County Missouri when he was 21 years of age. Married and moved to carthage missouri. James arrived in Clarksville, Red River county on march 1842. He lived there for 2 years and them ,moved to Bowie, then to Kaufman county. In August of 1846 he arrived in Austin where he remained for several years working as a carpenter and builder, although he as a hatter by trade. On either 11 oct. or nov. there are two different dated recorded, 1886, James Cawlfield died at the home of his son, John Guy Cawlfield Sr.. James was buried in the Fall Creek Cementery near Marble Falls Texas.
