Debra, Thanks for that. Guess it was Boone who named the place. For more about Wolf Hills, I found this, at the Washington Co. rootsweb site (of all obvious places to look)! http://www.rootsweb.com/~vawashin/ Sounds like it was what later became Abingdon. Is that right? I went and looked in another Historical Soc. publication, Series II, No. 9, July 1971, "Remembrances of Abingdon" by Lewis Thompson Cosby, where he describes the homes and who lived them prior to the Civil War. I wonder if the house (1-EE) -East End- corner of Main and Tanner, is the house built by the Balfours, who bought the land of Alex. Breckinridge in the early years. Cosby describes it as "the large brick house on the corner. This was the residence of James Balfour, who had quite a large family. He had three daughters, Miss Sally, Amanda, and Lizzie. Miss Sally taught school in the Humes building, second story over the store room. It was a mixed school and the best boys and girls went to her. The writer remembers well the deference paid the girls by the boys in those days and what a happy time they had. Miss Sally did not hesitate to use the rod and she used it so unmercifully on the brother of the writer that he left the school. John was shown great sympathy by the girls on that occasion." Seems like the girls impressed Mr. Cosby. He doesn't mention the names of the boys in the Balfour family. Don't know if this is the same home, or another one.
