The JENKINS and STEVENS families may have been the families by those names who lived in or in the general vicinity of Denton Valley which is located on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River (South Holston Lake) which is south of Abingdon and south of the mouth of Wolf Creek which flows into the south fork. "The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Washington County, Virginia", (1987), by Netti Schreiner-Yantis, page 966: John JENKINS & Wm. JENKINS. Two lines below Wm. JENKINS was Abraham SMITH and both were called upon for the 1787 tax purposes on July 31st., thus they may have lived near each other. Also Charles STEPHENS was six lines below John JENKINS, but Charles was "called upon" on a different day. 1785 Tax List of WC: Alexander MONTGOMERY's Return -- JINKINS, T. Senr. & T. Junr. 1786 Tax List of WC: Captain Joseph BLACK's Precinct -- SMITH, A.; JENKINS, T. Senr. & T. Junr. John, Wm. & Thomas JENKINS were in the 1788 WC Tax List for the "Lower District". Also Charles, George and Thomas STEVENS. Thomas Sr. & Jr., John & Wm. JENKINS were in the 1789 WC Tax List for the "Lower District". Also Charles & Thomas STEPHENS. No JENKINS/JINKINS OR STEVENS/STEPHENS are in the WC 1790 Tax List for the "Lower District". Benjamin STEVENS was granted a Land Grant dated 15 Mar 1788 for 1,000 acres on the south side of the South Fork of the Holston River adjoining Benjamin STEVENS was granted a Land Grant dated 21 Mar 1788 for 3,000 acres on the south side of the Holston River adjoining David DRYDEN, SMITH, crossing Mill Creek, adjoining JENKINS, crossing Cove Spring Branch, adjoining MONTGOMERY, up the several courses of the river. [VA Land Grant Book 16:398-399]. James MONTGOMERY, assignee (conveyed without a deed) of Mathew SMITH, was granted a Land Grant dated 02 Jul 1793 for 1,000 acres known by the name of Dorens and Keers (DORAN & KERR) Improvement adjoining John JENKINS, crossing Mill Creek, adjoining Alexander MONTGOMERY. 16 Nov 1802 deed from Abraham SMITH & Margaret his wife to Wm. MILBURN, a tract of land known by the name of Dovan and Kerrs Improvement, containing 100 acres. Bounds: east side of Mill Creek, crossing the creek. Witnesses: Andrew RUSSELL, John GILLILAN, Thomas (his / mark) STEVENS, James McCROSKIE, Hiram CRAIG, & Joel GOLLOHER. Beginning on the north side of Cove Spring Branch. Witnesses: John McCAULEY, Wm. McFARRAN, Thomas McCAULEY, James MONTGOMERY, & John EDMISTON. [WC Deed Book 1:129]. Also see Alexander MONTGOMERY's Land Grant dated 10 Jul 1788 for the above 200 acres [VA Land Grant Book 17:362-363]. 29 Aug 1799 Will of Thomas STEPHENS, probated 18 Mar 1800 Executors: wife Ann, son Henry. Sons: Henry, John, Richard, Thomas, David, Wm. Daughters: Ann, Elizabeth, Mary. Grandson: Thomas SWEET. Witnesses: Adam & James HOPE, & David DRYDEN. Securities: Abraham McCONNELL & James LAUGHLIN.
