I know I have a census record indicating that John and Thursey Privett and their children are living in Carroll Co. in July 1850. >> >From the following information on Anderson HOWARD and Paul C. HILL -- John & Thursey PRIVETT may have been living in Carroll County in July 1850 near the far south east corner of Wythe County (or they may have been living in that area of Wythe County in March 1850 and later that year moved to Carroll County). - - - - - - - - - - Anderson HOWARD, Esq., the School Commissioner for John PRIVETT's children, was granted a Land Grant for 109 acres in Wythe County on the north side of New River on 01 Aug 1836. (The location on the Library of VA website has Wood Co., VA which is incorrect -- the actual Land Grant entry has Wythe Co.). Adjoining neighbors were Stephen & Janes SANDERS, a 45 acre tract "made in the name of James CROCKET, and Mitchell CARTER. [Source: VA Land Grant Book 86:308]. "In 1840, Joseph BAKER SOLD a tract including the island to his son Joseph M. C. BAKER. ... 132 acres on the south side of New River adjoining A. HOWARD, John KING, William PEIRCE and Joseph Mc BAKER (Wythe Co. Deed Book 15, p. 187; Book 19, p 351)." The BAKER's lived on New River near Foster Falls. Anderson HOWARD Married Sally CALFEE on 28 Aug 1823 in Wythe Co. by Peter HOWARD, Minister of the Gospel. "The United Methodist Brick Church had its beginning about 1837 when John and Hannah SANDERS conveyed land for a union meetinghouse to the Trustees, David GRAHAM, Anderson HOWARD, Robert RAPER, and Adam SANDERS. The first church building was torn down and much of the material was used for the present building, which was erected nearby, not far from Graham's Cedar Run iron furnace. The bricks were made locally, and the church is known simply as "the Brick Church." [Source: "Wythe County, Virginia, a Bicentennial History, (1989), by Mary B. Kegley, page 228]. Paul C. HILL, the teacher for John PRIVETT's children, married Mary D. CROCKETT in Wythe Co. on 29 Dec 1842 (by George PAINTER, a Presbyterian Minister). The bond was dated 27 Dec 1827; Surety was John W. TRUSLOW; Consent of Nancy CROCKETT for her daughter to marry; December 24, 1842, autorization of Marrey B. CROCKETT for the clerk to issue the license. CROCKETT purchased from Ephraim McGAVOCK the former slaves of Mrs. Paul C. HILL. ... The two slaves Madison and Sheperd, were sons of Freal FALKNER, and all of them had worked for David GRAHAM at the Barren Springs Furnace when it was in blast." Page 72 -- 06 May 1848 -- Henry C., 13, child of Thursey (?) OURY. Page 79 -- 05 Oct 1849 -- Henry C., 9, child of Thirsa OURY. [age as printed]. Page 85 -- 15 Aug 1850 -- Nancy, 8, child of Thirza OURY. Page 62 -- 08 Jul 1843 -- Thirsy, 8, child of Martha ROGERS. Page 77 -- 12 May 1849 -- Thursa, 10, Jno. P., 7, children of Joseph SERRATT. Page 82 -- 27 Mar 1850 -- Thursa, John P., children of Joseph SERRATT. Page 84 -- 12 Jul 1850 -- Thirza N., 13, John P., 12, James W., 10, children of Joseph W. SARRETT. Page 138 -- Stephen V. OURY married Thurza SMITH on 14 Sep 1843. Stephen was a school teacher. Page 7 -- 07 Dec 1832 -- Kendrick, James, Thursa, children of Peter SHUPE. Thursa (also Thirza) SHUPE was born 15 Apr 1821 in Grayson Co., VA. She moved with her family to Utah and married James DUNN (Family records).
