Michael CORMANY (son of John CORMANY and Elizabeth COOK) married Mary HUTTON on 23 Jan 1856. As best as I can determine the above John CORMANY was probably the son of Michael CORMANY (who was the son of Michael CORMANY and Barbary/ Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH). And the Michael CORMANY who married Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH was Michael Jr., son of Michael CORMANY Sr. and his wife, Catharine MEYER I ....... Michael CORMANY Sr. and Catharine MEYER. II ...... Michael CORMANY Jr. and Barbary/ Barbara ROUSH/REUSCH. III ..... John CORMANY and Elizabeth COOK. IV ..... Michael CORMANY and his two wives (1) Sarah HUTTON and (2) Mary HUTTON. In "Smyth County Marriages, 1832-1850" page 17, is a note for Sarah HUTTON: "(alias McCALL)" which probably means Sarah HUTTON was previously married and her maiden name was McCALL. Michael CORMANY Jr.’s oldest child seems to have been John thus John may have been born soon after Michael Jr. and Barbara were married on 24 Feb 1795 in Wythe County. John would have been old enough to have married and had a son Michael (who was born about 1820). John was named first in his father’s 1852 will (Wythe Co., VA Will Book 2:351). Also, John’s sister, Lucretia (CORMANY) CASSELL, widow of Joseph CASSELL, died without children and Lucretia’s mother and father died before her, so Lucretia’s siblings were her heirs. Mary KEGLEY ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters," Volume V, (2004), pages 230-231) wrote that a chancery lawsuit found in the basement of the Wythe County Courthouse (Wythe County Chancery, Joseph JOHNSON et als vs. Martin S. STEFFEY, administrators, 1879-35) names Lucretia’s heirs, John being first named of Lucretia’s 11 heirs. Quite a few times in wills and court cases, etc., the first named child will be the oldest child. Michael CORMANY Sr. also had a son John, but John married Caty BAUGH on 15 Mar 1804. [KEGLEY, page 231]. One thing that has not been resolved is that you noted that Mary HUTTON who married Michael CORMANY on 23 Jan 1856 was "born about 1819." The marriage record in Jack HOCKETT’s book has Mary HUTTON as age 37, thus born about 1819 too. But in the 1850 census of Smyth County, the Mary that was the daughter of the James and Elizabeth HUTTON on page 215B of the census was age 20, thus born about 1830 -- a difference of about 10 years. So, either the marriage record age was wrong or transcribed wrong or this Mary HUTTON was not the Mary that married Michael CORMANY. Michael and Mary are not in the 1860 census of Smyth County and I do not have access to the 1860 census of Lee County, thus I have not been able to resolve the age problem. I did find one other Mary HUTTON (age 23) in the 1850 Smyth County census that would have been born about 1827, but she was living with Abram HUTTON (age 26). (Abraham HUTTON and Mary SLEMP were married 15 Feb 1847 in Smyth Co., VA, [Smyth County Marriages, 1832-1850, page 27] ). Smyth Co., VA Deed Book 1:388-390 -- 13 Sep 1834 -- Elizabeth SNAVELY et al (to) Barbary WASSUM, 86 acres in Smyth County on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Leonard HUTTON and Joseph ADKINS were adjoining neighbors on the north of the 86 acre tract and Michael CORMANY was an adjoining neighbor on the southwest part of the 86 acres. Smyth Co., VA Deed Book 1:376-378 -- 22 Jan 1835 -- Henry & Barbary WASSUM (to) Dixon & James HUTTON, 81 and a half acres [adjoining the western boundary line of the above 86 acre tract. Dixon and James were sons of Leonard HUTTON]. -------------------------------------------------- (1) Mount Airy - Michael CORMANY Sr. home When Wythe County, Virginia, was created in 1790, the present day town of Rural Retreat, Virginia, did not exist, but was the farm and orchard lands of Michael CORMANY, Sr. Long before the formation of Rural Retreat, Virginia, (some 40 years give or take) the old town of Mount Airy was formed on the old stage road a bit west of the present town of Rural Retreat. A fairly large tract of land (some 250 acres) east of present day Rural Retreat proper, remained in the ownership of Peter CORMANY, a son of Michael. These lands became the lands of Joal CORMANY, Peter's son, who married a sister of Solomon BUCK, and would remain in the CORMANY family until the early 1900's. The old CORMANY home, the front part being the original log home of Michael CORMANY, still stands today in Rural Retreat, Virginia. http://personal.cfw.com/~cameronnet/cameron/town.htm -------------------------------------------------- (2) ANCESTORS OF PAUL ROBERT TOBLER 35.
